Georgia State trying everything to get first win

Georgia State’s football coaches are trying everything they can to get the good results they are seeing on the practice field to happen during the games. So far, nothing has worked. The team is 0-4 and will face winless William and Mary on Saturday in Williamsburg, Va.

However, coach Bill Curry and his players recognize that they can’t keep doing the same thing and expect different results.

“… We’ve got to activate that talent and that’s significant,” Curry said.

Everything is being scrutinized. The biggest change this week was the opening of the quarterback competition in an attempt to jump-start a sputtering offense. A unit that is efficient in practice isn’t producing the same results in games. The Panthers have averaged 11.8 points and 297.2 yards per game.

Curry and offensive coordinator John Bond said it’s not fair to pin all the responsibility on redshirt freshman quarterback Ben McLane. He is trying to overcome his experience, and his teammates haven’t helped by dropping passes or blowing assignments. Curry said his teammates aren’t playing to their capability. For example, in the game against Richmond, the Panthers drove to the 13-yard line. On one of the subsequent plays, the primary receiver ran the wrong route. He would have been open had he run the correct route.

“Us looking at what we are doing this week is no reflection on Ben McLane, it’s just a reflection of where we are as an offense right now,” Bond said.

The players are frustrated and determined to improve.

Tight end Emmanuel Ogbuehi met with Curry earlier this week to discuss what he can do to improve his performance. Ogbuehi had a pass go through his hands late in the first half of Saturday’s loss to Richmond. The deflection was intercepted, and the Spiders eventually converted the touchdown into a turnover. That drop and the result are an example of the inability to make plays that has acted like an anchor to drag this team down for the past 15 games.

The coaches aren’t immune from introspection.

During the spring, Curry and his staff began grading the players’ effort in every practice and showing the results to the team. He said more players are earning perfect grades. The coaches have begun to scrutinize the walk-throughs even more, making sure the players are focusing on the minutiae of each position because they believe better practice habits usually lead to better game results.

“Everything we can do to get our minds in the games to perform up to the ability,” he said.

Last week, Curry transformed practice from first- and second-teams competing against the scout teams to first teams playing against each other, even at the risk of losing players to injury. He’s doing almost anything to breed competition and teach his players what it feels like to win. Basketball coach Ron Hunter did something similar when he took over last year by creating making almost every drill in practice a competition.

“We need to get a win and have all of these young guys understand how wonderful that is,” Curry said. “If you’re a competitor, there is nothing like winning. There is also nothing like losing. You just can’t stand the latter, so you fight to reach the former.”

Trying to preview this weekend’s GSU, W&M game through descriptions from practice and analysis of statistics is really over doing it. Just look at the population differences between Williamsburg, VA and Atlanta. Thats where games are won and lost.

I have to be honest I am soooo happy to see this program falling on its face. With all the sh!t talk your fans did watching you not win a single game this year is going to icing on the cake! Where will you hide after Southern gets its SBC invite this spring?

Andre Hastings, who once played for UGA, dropped a punt against Tenn and eventually UGA lost the game. During a call in on the Fifth Qrt radio segment, special team coach and OL coach Wayne Mcduffie was aked if that dropped punt led to UGAs lost and he respnded by saying “Please don’t blame the player who dropped the punt, I have got to do a better job coaching him on how to catch a punt”.

Falling on its face? You’re a clown dude. Building a program takes time. It took FIU years just to have a season over .500. We did that our first year.Western Kentucky, the team that just beat an SEC team, is 3 years removed from going winless in a season. That’s the problem with little inferior programs, always trying to chime in at the big boy table.

Keep thinking we’re on our face. That little speck in our rear view is your irrelevant program! Beep beep!

Yeah the Sunbelt is looking for cow town universities in the middle of nowhere to invite in the conference. If they didn’t let New Mexico State in, how in the heck you think Ga. Southern has a chance??? Just enjoy your six or seven pee wee league championships or whatever, shut up and stay irrelevant.

I love how you Georgia State idiots still try to drag Georgia Southern in to this. NEWS FLASH: Your team and school is absolute garbage. Everybody in the state knows that Georgia State is a late night commuter school for middle age McDonalds managers looking to get ahead in life. You will never be relevant, regardless of your affiliation in the Sun Belt. Stop trying to put the spot light on how redneck statesboro is. Have you ever driven through downtown Atlanta? Not exactly prime real estate. I swear you have the most delusional fans of any program out there.

Second News Flash: The Sun Belt is a TERRIBLE conference. Nobody cares or respects you because you were invited into the bush leagues. Have fun going 0-11 every year for a few years and leave football to the big boys.

@ GODAWGS
I guess this is your first day here so I will set you straight. State clearly has an inferior football team, but has and MBA program and Law School that are both ranked per U.S. News & World Report for 2013. Furthermore our Physical Therapy and Hospitality Admin. programs are ranked as well. I cannot determine the outcome of the football program, but it looks bleak at the moment. I can say that in regards to academics State has Southern out classed. I disagree with your opinion on the Sun Belt. Western Kentucky beat Kentucky and destroyed Southern Miss, ULM beat Arkansas went into over time with Auburn and stayed close with Baylor, Troy stayed close with Miss St the whole game as well. A better comment would be that the Sun Belt is a good conference, but it is way too competitive for Ga State. Your opinion about downtown Atlanta is derived form your racist views regarding African Americans and I would argue 90% of the Ga Southern fan base sides with you in your racist views. You don’t like Atlanta or Ga State because your a racist. Now tell me all about how you have a friend who is African American.

@Go Panthers!!
I didn’t want to say it, but I have feel that way as well. Southern trolls hate Atlanta and it just so happens Ga State is in Atlanta. Most of their comments have been derogatory with negative comments about State being in the ghetto. A ghetto becomes viewed that way based on the people that live in that specific area. One can only conclude that if you don’t like the ghetto or you call Atlanta the ghetto and Atlanta is primarily composed of African Americans, then you don’t like African Americans. Hence I agree that most of the Southern trolls are racist.

@GO MUTTS love how your uneducated mind thinks that GSU fans “drag” GaSots into this when the first two posts of significance in the thread were jealous GaSots! Then you follow that up with an idiotic statement about the Sun Belt? Typical Mutt who never darkened the door of a college, much less UG. The best part about this program for me is that our mere existence clearly gets under the skin of insecure football fans across the state. Our potential in undeniable, and they feel threatened – not this year, but down the road.

Academics? No.
Student enrollment? No.
MBA program? Law program? No and no.
Athletic conference? No.
Basketball program? No.
Alumni base? No.
Potential? No.

So if they want to harp on football, that’s cool. I’m quite happy being superior in everything else.

Look at the computer ranking in USA Today. In the Sun Belt only Western Kentucky (83) Louisiana Monroe(84) and Louisiana-Lafayette (80) rank higher than Ga Southern (90) Georgia State ranks 225.
Two FCS Schools, North Dakota State (54) and Youngstown State (75) rank higher than the entire Sun Belt Conference. Yes it’s the least respected FBS conference. I’m not sure it’s a step up from either the SoCon or the CAA>

Go Panthers, the only thing you got right is that Southern doesn’t have a law school.

I don’t think the sun belt will invite Southern or, for that matter, APP State. They don’t want a new school with the potential to compete for the conference championship their first year. They’d rather have someone they can all beat.

Wow, just wow people. It is amazing how defensive you State fans get. In a blog post about football you bring academics into it to make yourselves feel superior. Doing some research about the towns each university is in and the immediately surrounding areas would be good too. If Southern was to join to SBC after being invited they would have one of the largest media markets in the conference within less than an hour’s drive from campus (Savannah) compared to almost every other team.

Listen, both programs have their good points and their bad points. Southern has a fan base that is very passionate and cares deeply about the program. The vast majority of Southern graduates actually reside in and are from the Metro Atlanta area. Thinking and implying that “…90% of the Ga Southern fan base sides with you in your racist views…” is very ignorant thing to say. I’m not sure where you get that from aside from reading what one person posted on a public message board that is meant for anyone to read and comment on. If that is the education that you received from your illustrious institution, then I would be quesitoning that.

State will need time to adjust to actually playing football and that is what most Southern fans felt. Coming to the party thinking it is thrown for you is quite rude. ODU understands this. During our playoff game against them last year they were respectful about where they were, who they were playing, and where they were going.

On a side note, if you are going to talk about how much smarter you are than anyone else, you might want to do spell check and a grammar check to make sure you use the correct words, spelling, and punctuation. Just a thought.

Good luck the rest of the season.

GSouthEagle,

You make your points well.

I think it’s prudent to keep in mind that both fan bases have their fair share of idiots.

It’s probably fair to assume that there exists a palpable percentage of discourse between each side that comes directly from the stereotypical urban vs rural conflict. And, yes, it’s probably fair to alos assume that race does play some role in that.

Most GaSo fans aren’t rednecks, just as GSU is certainly not in the ghetto.

But I suppose that’s just how it’s going to always go on these forums.

BTW, I for one would love to see GaSo join the SBC. It would have the potential to be one hell of a rivalry for sports. I just think the FBS market isn’t in GaSo’s favor at this time.

@Go Panthers!! – Georgia State isn’t in the ghetto? It seemed like it was to me when I went to grad school (Robinson) there several years ago. I also remember seeing something in The Signal from a few years back that said that the area around State’s campus was one of (if not the) most dangerous areas of Atlanta.

With that said, I didn’t have any problems when I attended State but I minded my own business and split when classes were over. Georgia State has a very good business school (and more than a few cute girls) but I couldn’t imagine matriculating there as an undergraduate and living on campus.

look if you guys knew anything about college football outside of the hbcu schools no one markets their program to african americans. thats the way it is and the way it will always be. consider yourself lucky that they are trying to get the black fans at the game. i myself am an african american and a true blue die hard ga southern fan. so to say that 90% of southern fans are racist is careless on your part. now if you said that 90% of southern fans are white then you would be somewhat correct. as i stated earlier 85-90% of every non-hbcu fanbase is white.

i know you guys hate to hear this but ga southern prides itself on a tradition of winning. we have a belief that no matter who we are lining up against we are going to win. do we always win no we don’t but we don’t make excuses and try to find scape-goats when we do lose. this is what the coaches tell there players in the locker room the weight room and on recruiting visits. let me give you this little nugget. the only people that love a winning team is there own fans. so yes ga southern is hated in the fcs,fbs and even in our own conference. i have been on the sun belt board and have seen some of the comments from the various teams.

Ga South in the same time frame against the same level of opponents stand 24-4 including its 1st national title.

Old Dominion 20-6

Sounds like more truth that ga st with the dome, the media market and the fbs invite still SUCKS! You guys cant win on any level. You might be joining fbs football next year but you would still lose to 75% of the fcs and all of fbs. No matter what insult you send our way it doesn’t matter because on the field you would lose to us. Have fun being the joke of fbs and the joke of the state.
