GSU team sports will be in CAA, individual sports will be in Sun Belt this fall

Georgia State’s individual sports will compete in the Sun Belt Conference this fall, while its team sports will play in the Colonial Athletic Association during the upcoming athletic season. The decision seemingly finalizes Georgia State’s athletics future until all of its teams move to the Sun Belt in 2013-14.

“It’s a good resolution in a transitional year,” athletic director Cheryl Levick said.

The individual sports that can play in the Sun Belt tournaments are: men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s tennis.

Levick said she didn’t ask for the Sun Belt to consider the team sports because of scheduling issues.

The Panthers announced in April they were leaving the CAA for the Sun Belt, effective July 1, 2013. Citing its bylaws, the CAA ruled in June that Georgia State would not be allowed to compete for conference championships in the 2012-13 year in team sports because it resigned from the conference. It did decide to allow individuals in certain sports (cross country, swimming and diving, track and field and wrestling) to compete in championships.

Trying to find a way to allow as many students as possible to have a chance to play in NCAA tournaments, Levick turned to the Sun Belt. The conference voted on July 20 to allow Georgia State’s 10 individual sports to compete in their conference tournaments for the 2012-13 year as associate members. CAA commissioner Tom Yeager agreed to this proposal. Individual sports in the CAA and Sun Belt don’t play regular-season conference schedules.

Men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball will play in the CAA this fall. They won’t be eligible to play in the CAA conference tournaments, whose champions received automatic berths to NCAA tournaments, but are eligible to be selected for the NCAA’s as at-large teams.

Every team sport other than football will compete in the Sun Belt and be eligible for its conference tournaments in 2013-14. Football will be eligible to win the Sun Belt and go to bowl games in 2014.

Atlanta and the rest of the state wait with breathless anticipation as the Panthers enter individual sports competition in the Sun Belt Conference. Golf and tennis – woohooo! Good luck winning titles in those sports. God knows you won’t be getting any in baseball or football.

Actually that GT post was me, also known as ATLGSUEAGLE on the Sunbelt boards attempting once again to cast doubt on GSU’s existence. Man, I’m driving myself crazy! It’s tough graduating from a community college that plays Division II football in a Podunk town! I get a special message every time a GSU Blog is posted or message is written. I’m all over it boss!

Blue Blood,

You ought to be glad there’s a handful of Southern and Tech fans posting on here. Literally noone else cares Panther football. And have you considered this: Bill Curry might finish his third season and career at Georgia State with less than ten wins total! I personally think the Panthers win one game this year and ‘ol Bill makes it to number 10, though.

The GT fan is confirming that he follows and knows about GSU football due to his knowledge of our loss to West Alabama. People care, especially GT fans who know that they aren’t the only game in town. It must be a total shock that after 100 years of being the only college football team in the City of Atlanta that there is now another team right down the street; which offers more majors, is easier to get into, is #1 in graduating African-Americans, has more co-eds, and is now going FBS…

I know this: Georgia State football sucks and will never amount to anything. Do the Sun Belt a favor by not scheduling any more NAIA teams. That way you won’t embarass your new conference any more than you’re already going to do as it is. Oh, and I’m sure that crew in Statesboro would demolish your joke of a team.

GT is sounding scared and can also see the future (just look at his bold prediction that we will never amount to anything)! You know that we are coming up quickly and that bothers you so much. Yeah we had a bad season, but so has Tech in its 100+ year history…with some embarrassing losses as well…Mercer, St. Albans, Ft. Mcpherson, Savannah AC, Sewanee, Nashville University, Davidson, Washington & Lee, Oglethorpe, Carnegie Mellon, etc…

GT isn’t smart enough to realize that he is the moron that brought up losing to West Alabama (in only our 2nd year of football), yet his precious Jackets were losing to teams worse than that 20-30 years into playing football. GT wants to tout 100 years of tradition, but with that tradition comes some embarrassment that they seem to forget about. Not to mention getting bent over on a yearly basis to UGA.

Georgia Tech is scared of us because…well, we’re easy to get in to, we offer a wider array of “courses”, we graduate more locals who flunked-out of Morehouse or Clark Atlanta, and we have more housewives (I mean coeds) on campus. Plus we’re about to move to a glorified FCS conference that, in addition to solidifying our football program’s position as losers, will also cost the school and athletic department a lot more money. Fear us Jackets!

Is my dad trolling on here now…He graduated from Southern and Tech. I guess times are getting tough for fans of either A. a program that isn’t living up to its “tradition” or B. a program that is now playing catch up to a program that has only been in existence for 2 years.

Blue Blood,

Why will Georgia State not compete for fan base? One need not look any further than its own students and alumni. Hardly any of them go to games or even care about the football program. Quite pathetic! Do you think that moving to a conference that most people in Georgia couldn’t care less about (outside of a few State and Southern fans) is going to excite people? Losing excites noone and that’s what State’s going to continue to do in football.

Question? What else is there at Ga Southern than a FCS football team. State isn’t known for football or sports for that matter. All I know about the State is that they have a top ten part time law school and a ranked MBA program. I know much more about Southern than I do Ga State as do most people that live in Georgia, but unfortunately everything I have heard or been told about Southern’s academics is negative. If my kids tell me they want to go to school at Southern I would be worried it was for the wrong reasons.
