Q&A with GSU wide receiver Jordan Giles

Here is the latest in the question-and-answer sessions with Georgia State football players.

Today: wide receiver Jordan Giles, who caught 16 passes for 264 yards and four touchdowns as a redshirt sophomore last season.

Don’t forget that football practice starts Aug. 1 an d I’d like to hear your thoughts about the team.

Q: How has the team looked in 7 on 7 drills?

A: The team has been looking great. Everyone from the quarterbacks, to the running backs, to the DBs to the receivers are running well. The competition is great.

Q: The question everyone wants to know: how has projected starting quarterback Ben McLane looked?

A: Ben is doing great, along with every other quarterback that came into this offseason. All are competing well, which is why it’s going to be a great competition.

Q: Quarterbacks and wide receivers usually develop a relationship. Have you and Ben developed a relationship yet?

A: Me and Ben, he’s been here since last year. We’ve had a lot of time. We’ve done one-on-one sessions along with every quarterback. The quarterback-wide receiver relationship is vital. Every quarterback wants to improve.

Q: Who was the toughest DB you faced?

A: I can guarantee that all of our DBs will be tough. If I singled one out, that wouldn’t be fair. I alternate between the slot and outside receiver. I think everyone of our DBs will be a force to be reckoned with in the fall.

Q: Who did you usually go against?

A: In the slot, I usually have the outside linebacker over me. If I rotate to the outside, I see a little bit of everybody.

Q: Has someone asked you not to single out teammates, or is that just you?

A: I know how it is with my teammates. Everyone is working really hard. To single one person out wouldn’t be fair.

Q: The other players have talked about how much stronger and faster they are. How have you fared in the offseason program?

A: I’ve gained seven pounds since beginning of June. That’s seven pounds of muscle. I improved on my bench, squat, hang clean, I’m faster, I’m in a better shape. That’s true of every player who has been here since June. Coach pollard is working us.

Q: What do you want to improve upon most during the August practices?

A: It’s such a generic reason, but everything. Being a receiver you want to improve. I want to focus on my blocking a little bit more. You can catch the ball better, you can run faster, just becoming the best receive I can be. If I want to improve and be the best I have to improve upon every aspect of every game.

Q: The team has an inexperienced line and a strong group of running backs. If y’all the run the ball a lot early in the season, is that Ok with the wide receivers?

A: Football is a team sport so I think as long as we get the W, we will be happy. Every receiver wants to catch the ball, but there are 11 guys on the field. Sometimes you have give up things for the betterment of the team. We do have a great group of running backs. The line is big, getting stronger and getting faster.

Q: What was the worst moment last year?

A: I will say that looking back, at the end of the season, each loss hurt. But when you look back at the season and see how close we were, we lost so many games by less than a touchdown. One play or another play could have changed the whole season. That was the most frustrating part of the year, there were so many plays that could have changed our season.

Q: Why weren’t y’all able to make those plays?

A: Hindsight is 20-20, but in every game we gave our all. This year we are just more focused, more prepared, stronger mentally and physically. We are healthy and faster and strong.

Those plays that might have been the game-changers last year, we can make those plays and have a better season.

Q: To ask a coach-type question, did you give your all last year, or looking back on it, did you just think you were giving it your all?

A: I think we gave it our all on every single play, but maybe that was our all then. Our all last year isn’t as good as our all this year. When we step on the field we gave 100 percent. Last year we weren’t really making those big plays. This year we will be.

Here is the Q&A with offensive lineman Michael Davis.

Doug, do you get the feeling that talking about the QB situation is a touchy subject with players?

Great inteview D! (Is D Okay?)

It sounded to me like he didn’t want to really get into the QB situation.

Any news on how Ronnie Bell is doing?

No, I didn’t get the feeling it was a touchy subject. Jordan didn’t single anyone out in any of the questions.

Yeah, he played it way too PC in this interview. Interviews are for opinions. The toughest DB doesn’t have to involve controversy.

I love Giles as he’s always positive, but clearly he should be a politician after reading this interview. Thanks for bringing it to us Doug.

He is a team player that is smart enough to know the power of his words in a published interview.

Not “touchy” and not “too PC”. Don’t try to stir up controversy.

I am looking forward to Jordan making those plays that count – he can do it.

DOUG…………..I think you need to call the team GaState or STATE……stop the GSU…..GaSou has used it in sports longer than Ga State.
There is North Carolina…UNC
North Carolina State University….NCSU or STATE.

Try this one………..Which DB can you get to the inside on faster and he is slow to turn his hips

which QB reads your cuts better to have the ball in play as soon as you make your break?

Ugh. This again. Georgia State became GSU long before Southern did. So Georgia State has been using GSU longer in sports than GSoU

Georgia Southern College became Georgia Southern University in 1990
Georgia State College became Georgia State University in 1969
That should settle it!

A person SMART enough to know…… You are just a dumb butt troll with very limited knowledge of just about everything except how to be a very stupid, idiotic and moronic troll. The more we hear from you the more we KNOW that GS students and alums are just of inferior intellect. Save GS’s rep and stop posting.

@ SMART, Check out our helmets! Oh and by the way we had GSU on Baseball hats in the late 70’s early 80’s before GS revived football! Therefore, you are GS or South Georgia U.

Don’t worry guys, A person smart enough to know is going through a really tough time. Unlike other GaSo trolls, it has taken him a little longer to accept the fact that GSU has ascended so rapidly over the last 3 years, while watching that Podunk school in Statesboro get passed up by 4 start-ups.

His only comeback is to try and derail every GSU blog. The most hilarious thing is, while he spends so much time trying to discredit everything GSU, we continue to be in first year of FBS transition. Meanwhile, that cute community college down south will continue to play Division II football. Just wow!

YES…………….YES………………YES GSU became GSU after GaState was already called GSU…..BUT……….BUT….BUT…………GaState didn’t/doesn’t have NAME recognition as a SPORTS team as GSU.
GaSTATE needs to be called
STATE or GaState. You have NO IDENTITY as GSU.
MAKE an IDENTITY as GaSTATE.
GaSOU has made an Identity for 20+ years as GaSou then GSU…..

STATE fans get a clue and EARN and CREATE an Identity as GaState Panthers.

How many PSU’s are out there? When you hear PSU what do you think? Penn St not peoria state.

MAKE a NAME of GaState. I thought you guys had a good MARKETING Degree and could understand this simple FACT.
You are going to FIGHT to make GSU your name when GaSOU has a History?

I don’t know much about GaSou/ GSU………….I am a friend of Bill Curry & Larry Morris and i am a Georgia Tech Fan. I am telling you guys to GROW and Create your OWN Identity.

Lose the GSU…………it is not anything to be Proud of at this point in time.

you are moving up to the Big boy football and NEED a NEW name.

Would the Football world know GaSTATE or would it still know GSU as a confusing acronym?

There is not a SINGLE team named GaSTATE but there are a few GSU’s out there.

Arg Blu………..I live in the ATL and I think GaState needs to make a NAME for themselves. What part of that is WRONG?
GaSOU is TIED to GaSTATE by initials right now and you need to Separate yourselves from them.

Do you not understand MARKETING?
The EAGLES has a HUGE HISTORY of winning in football.
GaStates needs to separate themselves from those letters to BUILD a HISTORY to stand alone.

Google GSU and see what comes up
Google GaState and now tell me what you think.

@SMART – I don’t need to Google Georgia Southern, Georgia State, or GSU as I graduated from BOTH schools and have spent plenty of time in Metro Atlanta and even more time in Statesboro. I know about Georgia Southern’s outstanding football program just as I’m aware of Georgia State’s tremendous graduate business school. Trust me, sharing the same abbreviation as Southern is the LEAST of concerns for State’s football program right now.

All I have to say is….when it comes to football, GA State will never live up to our tradition. We may not be Division 1 yet but its by choice, not because we cant be. If you do your research, Nick Saban said that Ga Southern was the hardest team they faced last year….I didnt hear that when Alabama ran through yall. Also, remember this, 6 flags over Ga Southern…none over Ga State!!! #GoEagles

GaSTATEhas the chance to BE the GA STATE and not just another GSU……
GOD I wish RON CURRY was still alive. He would be kicking your butts about Marketing and making a NEW FOOT PRINT in the BCS/FBS with a Unique Name……………….

Ron CURRY…….The person that has given much money to the school and has a Trophy named for him would be MAD as HELL about you guys being WEAK…..

We have our own stadium in S. GA, but no one cares…we have six flags, but no one cares…we tell other teams how to do marketing, but no one cares

GIT (Georgia Institute of Technology…if you really wanna talk about initials) outta here and go play with your triple option buddies in Statesboro…

Every team in GA has been a huge let down for how much talent is here (outside of our minor league football team in Statesboro), so pointing fingers and telling GSU how much they suck (only having played football for 2 seasons) is pretty funny coming from a team with 100+ years of tradition that hasn’t done squat since 1990, and before that it was another long period of nothing worth remembering.
