Thompson dismissed from GSU football team

Rod Thompson, a redshirt freshman, was dismissed from Georgia State’s football team today for violating team rules.

Thompson, a graduate of Mays High, is one of several players on the defensive side of the ball who have been released by coach Bill Curry in the offseason. Thompson, a 6-3, 235-pound defensive end, joins starting defensive end A.J. Portee and starting linebacker Dexter Moody among the players who won’t return.

In other news, the women’s tennis team’s recruiting class was ranked No. 1 in TennisRecruiting.net’s annual list of the top mid-major programs.

GSU is adding Natallia Vavulina and Linn Timmermann for the 2012-13 year. Vavulina has been ranked as high as No. 112 in the ITF rankings. Timmerman went 33-2 last year at Saddlebrook Preparatory School in Wesley Chapel, Fla.

I’m glad coach Curry is putting his foot down. We need student athletes with their heads on straight that are ready to work hard. Looking forward to the season. See y’all in the concrete jungle.

Mr. CURRY likes MEN of Character and not characters on his team. Mr. Curry play for the BEST and with the BEST. If you are a Jack Wad you need to find another Coach to play for

GaSTATE could really pick up in Recruting Georgia talent moving to the SUN BELT. You can’t find this diversity at UGa

Georgia State ranked top for graduating African-Americans
By Laura Diamond
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Georgia State University was ranked No. 1 in the nation for awarding the most bachelor’s degrees to African-Americans, according to a report from Diverse: Issues in Higher Education.
Georgia State awarded 1,262 degrees to African-Americans this year, a one-year increase of 17 percent. That pushed the college past Florida A&M and North Carolina A&T State universities.
The college has also received national recognition for its success with Asian and Latino students. More than half of the school’s nearly 32,000 students are minority.

I fear GaState’s ability to get recruits UGa and Tech Want. I will still say with GT’s curriculum many of the UGa & GaState recruits will not be able to stay at TECH but it could draw kids away and same for UGa.

Doug, can you find out what he was dismissed for? If it is what @alumni 96 heard, then that is pretty harsh.

If that is the RULE then NO they CAN”T have girls in their room.
You do know how it works at BYU don’t you?
If you don’t like the Coaches Rules you are free to transfer or brake the rule and risk being caught an face the consequences. Here is a crazy Idea and against the character of the entitled athletes but they can just follow the rules.

All the players know what the rules are and what the punishment is for breaking them. The university has no problem with having girls in the room, but the football program has problems when their players don’t get a good nights sleep.

You saw the problems we had last season. Coach knows better now than to let stuff slide.

VERY glad to see Coach Curry ride herd over the team. Too many male college athletes think the sun rises and sets on them. They’re too often invested in going pro. Compare female athletes, who generally excel academically and athletically and conduct themselves professionally already. Young male athletes have been sold a bill of goods in this culture. Coach Curry, keep the boys in line. The faculty thanks you, I’m sure. The team member I taught had no attitude problems and did what he was supposed to do (after a little prodding from Coach). As a result of his hard work and Coach’s guidance, he is about to graduate.

Ya that was the rules but come on guys is that punishment a little harsh? What happened to discipline? Kicking a player off the team isn’t discipline . It’s just wrong ! What happened to making a kid run extra in practice or even suspension? I’m not say Thompson was right but I just think the punishment was to severe.. Especially for a player of his talent level. I have followed this kid sense high school and according to coaches and players. He had no character issues . He was just a little immature. But that’s life the kid had only been in the program for a year.

96….we don’t KNOW what ALL happened and it probably was not a 1 time thing. Playing college football is not a right but a privilege and if the kid was not holding up his end the coach made the right choice.

96 if you are going to start crying this bad this early you will never last as a blogger of a FBS team. It will only get more focused on the players choices and Bill Curry know it. You better get thicker skin and man-up.

We just had a GSU basketball player charged with rape. Maybe it should be a rule not to have girls in your dorm after hours. Seems like a recipe for disaster.
