Schlechter dismissed from GSU football team

Backup quarterback Bo Schlechter was dismissed from Georgia State’s football team on Friday following his arrest Thursday morning after a fight at a Buckhead bar.

Two of his teammates, placekicker Christian Benvenuto and linebacker Dexter Moody were also arrested, but weren’t dismissed by coach Bill Curry. They were suspended indefinitely. Moody was already on suspension after violating a team rule during spring practices in March.

“We have very stern standards about interaction with other people and when they are broken, the consequences are permanent,” Curry said. “We will not have people who create public mischief on our team.”

According to Atlanta Police spokesman Sgt. Curtis Davenport, three men told police they were attacked by the GSU students at the intersection of West Shadowlawn Drive and Peachtree Street in Buckhead. At least seven Atlanta police cars arrived on the scene and eventually handcuffed six men, among them Schlechter. Police found one of the victims with a torn shirt and broken necklace. Another had a visible injury but refused medical treatment.

“The subject with the ripped shirt identified Bo Schlechter as the subject that physically assaulted him,” Davenport said in a release.

The assault followed “trash talking” and the victims said one of the GSU students claimed he had a gun in a truck. Police searched a nearby white truck, however, and no gun was found, Davenport said.

One of those arrested told police he was on suspension from the GSU team, Davenport said. He didn’t identify the player. A female acquaintance also told police she needed to call “Bo’s coach,” the spokesman said.

Schlechter, 20, was charged with disorderly conduct fighting; Benvenuto, 19, disorderly conduct under the influence and Moody, 20, disorderly conduct under the influence.

The dismissal and suspensions continue a series of disciplinary issues for the football team.

Kelton Hill, a backup quarterback, was arrested last summer and charged with burglary. The Fulton County district attorney didn’t pursue the charges. He was readmitted to Georgia State and re-joined the team in August. He started the season’s final five games.

There were numerous suspensions during the fall for violations of team rules. Four players, including Moody, were suspended during spring practices in March. Three of the suspended players were reinstated. Defensive end A.J. Portee was dismissed from the team earlier this month for a violation of team rules related to academics.

Four players were suspended for violating team rules in the spring of 2011.

Schlechter, a redshirt sophomore from Wellington, Fla., started four games at quarterback last season, passing for 440 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions. He also punted 10 times for a 35.9-yard average. He would likely have been the third-string quarterback at best this season, behind Ben McLane and Hill.

Benvenuto, an upcoming sophomore from Palm Coast, Fla., was GSU’s second-leading scorer with 46 points. He hit nine of his 17 field goals. Six of the misses were from 45 yards or longer.

Moody, a redshirt junior who attended Emanuel County Institute in Twin City, led the Panthers with 65 tackles last season. Curry said Moody’s status hasn’t changed because he is still trying to find out what happened.

You are already suspended and you get into trouble while suspended. How come Moody was not dismissed?

The University of Georgia football program has nothing on the Georgia State fb program when it comes to player suspensions and disciplinary issues.

I’m really starting to wonder about the caliber of student-athletes GSU recruits. ** Shaking my head**

when is this going to be enough? eventually the administration is going to have to hold coach curry responsible. He obviously does not understand to recruit kids of good character. I’m no UGA fan, but if this was at georgia, other fans around would be clamoring for richt’s head. Leadership needs to be held responsible for no control, so its time for curry to go!

When are colleges going to learn when you recruit dumb thugs and then call them student-athlete this is what you are going to get. GSU use to have a good repoire when the students were older adults and scholastics was in abundance. Since then the university had been over-shadowed by troublemaking football players and their criminal activities.

Corey:
Have to respectful disagree with you. Few have called for coach Richt head for the off the field problems at Georgia. Like Richt, Curry is also a Christian man, but both don’t seem to be a good judge of character. This is happening at too many programs, perhaps it is the pressure to win. Even at GSU the stakes have gotten pretty high and as much as I love it, college football is out of control.

I don’t get GSU football, even with the fact that students now live somewhat on campus.

If I was worried about my escalating student loans and paying that Athletic Fee, I’d be pissed.

Just be good school, that’s all GSU has to do.

None of this is surprising. Jocks in high school float by on grades, assault and rape. Let them go to Georgia Southern where “whoopin’ ass” is a more respected pastime. Let students and working students go to a quality university.

Everybody take a deep breath. This happens all over the country, each year, at a lot of schools. UGA, GT, AL, FL, UNC and now GSU have nothing unique going. All the calls for “reform” are just that — these are still kids, and some of them will behave like kids. It’s not the fault of coaches — usually — but it becomes high profile when it involves athletes.

Bo should not have been dismissed over a bar fight. Couple that with another player involved in the incident and already suspended indefinitely whose status remains “still suspended” and it doesn’t add up. Bo got shafted!

How many good players have failed personal control issues in just 2 short years? Sure hope they get things right for their life going forward.

And Georgia Southern Troll College tries to get their name in light again. It is the only way they get them noticed is to make obnoxious entries on blogs that have nothing to do with them. While jealousy is a strong motivator, it is not a good motivator.

The Fulton County district attorney decided not to pursue the charges as long as Hill graduates from college within four years. He was readmitted to Georgia State and re-joined the team in August. Is this a GD joke? Cobb County will try to ruin your life for smoking some weed, but this guy can rob someone and his punishment is “he has to finish school?” That’s a punishment?
