GSU says no comment about Sun Belt announcement set for Monday

Georgia State is calling some of its donors to invite them to a 2 p.m. press conference scheduled for Monday at the Georgia Dome. The press conference will presumably focus on the Sun Belt Conference. reported Saturday that donors are being told the press conference will  be “life-changing for the athletics department.”

Karl Benson, the conference’s commissioner, said on Friday that he will be at Georgia State on Monday to discuss conference membership with university president Mark Becker and  athletic director Cheryl Levick. A text to Benson on Saturday hasn’t been returned. A Georgia State spokesperson declined to comment.

If this is real, this is great news for Georgia State

If you are a GSU alum or donor and have been contacted about coming to the dome on Monday, email me, please.

To: Cheryl & Mark
If this is true then on Tue please vote for the higher exit fees that will help keep all of those complainers and malcontents together in one place.

Go Panthers!!

Doug, this is a pretty big deal. We’ve been put on the front page of the AJC for less news than this.

Is this being relegated to the blog and not getting front page coverage because of poor timing (Masters, MLB), or does the Sun Belt just not register very high on the importance needle for the sports editor(s)?

Am I the only one not excited about this move? I painfully remember when we were perennial Sun Belt basement dwellers in hoops “back in the day.” As a football program we are barely crawling, much less walking and running. I just think we should build the foundation of the program slower and stronger and then align with a better FBC conference. No natural or compelling rivalries when I look at the Sun Belt website. I think we are rushing into this deal. Hope I’m wrong. Will support good ‘Ol GSU either way.

Have to move while the door is open! Wes said it best on 790 when he said that if we don’t move now, we may be stuck for the next 20 years. Of course I would have rather seen a jump to CUSA, but we have to take what we can get and the CUSA although still possibile when they make their moves, isn’t super realistic.

@Panthermike-82 opportunities for moving up to a FBS conference come very rarely. GSU needs to make the move when we can. Regarding SBC basketball, the CAA is a much better conference and we won our CAA schedule this year, in case you missed it. We have an amazing recruiting class coming in, as well. Also, I am wondering what an FBC conference is.

I find it crazy that an athletics spokesperson would decline to comment. Are they trying to downplay this??
