Georgia State defeated Tennessee Tech 74-43 on Tuesday in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament at the Sports Arena. The Panthers will play at Mercer at 4 p.m. Saturday in the second round.
The victory pushed the Panthers to 22 wins this season, something that impressed the hard-to-impress Ron Hunter.
“Focus on this, this team is 22-11,” Hunter said. “This time last year, they didn’t even have a coach (after winning 12 games). That’s one of the remarkable turnarounds in college basketball. I’m so proud of these kids. They are 22-11 in less than 12 months.”
Here’s the good and bad of the victory.
GOOD
Devonta White. He scored 24 points with four assists and hit 9 of his 13 shots.
James Fields. He scored 17 points on 7 of 10 shooting.
The defense. Golden Eagles coach Steve Payne said it’s usually hard to play zone defense against his team, presumably because they hit better than 35 percent of their 3-pointers this season. They missed 20 3-pointers against the Panthers. They shot 28.3 percent. They also forced 18 turnovers.
The shooting. The Panthers hit 52.7 percent of their shots, a number seldom his this year.
BAD
Free-throw shooting. That ol’ bugaboo again. The Panthers hit 9 of 15. Hunter has made no bones about the fact that if the team could hit free throws, it could have won 27 games.

Agreed that this team could possibly be in the NCAA tourney if we could have made more free throws! Relax at the free throw line guys and bring home a CIT Tournament Championship. You can do it!

Doug,
Please find out the financials from the game if possible. It is my understanding that it cost us as a University $31,500 just to host this game before operating expenses. What kind of revenue did we make off tickets? Concessions? Thanks

Great defense. The economic calculations are of playing at home would be interesting. Too many unforced turnovers. Seems when they get a decent lead they get a little sloppy with passes.

Things did get a bit sloppy when they were up by 30.
I can live with that.

@Doug or anyone else: Does anyone know whta happened to Kimbro? He was sitting all the way at the end of the bench. I know he made some bad decisions in the beginning of the game. He has shown flashes of being great, but sometimes I see him show no emotion (like last night on the bench).
Go GSU!

That was a fun game. First time since early in the season Tay showed how he can take over a game. I think that is a good sign for next year.

I don’t think anything happened with him. Hunter got into Kimbro’s face for a teaching moment after he made two mistakes. But he put him back in later.

The game cost $31500 to host. It costs Georgia State between $2000-$2,500 to host any game at the Sports Arena. That doesn’t include the referees.
The CIT stipulates that Georgia State keeps all revenues from the game. I don’t know how much they made in ticket sales, concessions, etc. last night. I’ll try to find out. It can take days to gather the information.

Hold the phone………..WE GAVE the CIT $31,500 to host?? Who is stupid enough to pay that kind of green to HOST? I can understand the Mercer hillbillies doing it but not GSU
