5 questions about Georgia State football, part III

Greetings.

I know that we are in the middle of hoops hysteria, including Georgia State hosting a game in the CollegeInsider.com tournament, or CIT, on Tuesday, but Georgia State will begin spring football practice on Wednesday.

To that, I’ll post five spring questions about the team that will bear looking at until practice ends April 6.

I encourage you to post your thoughts about each area because I enjoy what you have to say and I appreciate the feedback. Oh, and good luck with your NCAA tournament bracket and in Mark Bradley’s Bracket  Fiasco.

Here’s part I: a look at the defensive line.

Here’s part II: a look at the offensive line.

Here’s part III: How will the new strength and conditioning program show results?

Georgia State football coach Bill Curry wanted to see dedication from every one of his assistants and players as soon as they walked off the field, 42-35 winners over Campbell, in the season finale.

So Curry has become a cheerleader of sorts during the team’s new offseason workout program. He’s an active participant in the spirit station, one of the stops the players make during their routine. Curry and other players encourage their teammates to try to build confidence and camaraderie.  It’s something he said he’s never done before.

“I love it,” he said. “When we are there in the fourth quarter on the goal line and can’t breath, you can help me by giving me a pat on the butt and saying you can hit this guy. The team learns to encourage each other… that’s becoming a habit.”

Strength and conditioning coach Ben Pollard didn’t get much of a chance to work with the team before the 2011 season. His fingerprints are all over the team this season, and Curry and the players like what he’s doing.

“It’s clear that Pollard that brings a certain gift for motivation and technique,” Curry said.

He said the players are lifting a lot more weight than last season, but the team isn’t sacrificing quickness or flexibility. Curry said the offensive line is stronger but not much bigger because he wants them to play with a faster tempo.

In some of the position groups, Curry said the team is sacrificing some size for some speed. He said the team is noticeably faster than it was last season, and also stronger. The lack of both, or either, is one of the reasons the team couldn’t finish games last season. The Panthers scored a total 34 points in the fourth quarter last season, while giving up 123, the most of any quarter.

“We will run faster, we already do, run with more flexibility and will strike with a lot more power than we have before,” he said. “Those are things that are supposed to happen. Those things give you a chance.”

“The offensive line was another group that underwhelmed last year”

WOW, name a group that didn’t “underwhelmed.” I’ll offer up a different perspective that contributed to this groups struggles:
1. Two years of “Poor” strength and conditioning program (Coggins); Pollard has fixed S&C, thank God!
2. QB circus: jail bird, idiot, great kid just not a QB.
3. Poor passing game, QB passing accuracy poor, receiver drops.
4. RB injuries, see #1.
5. OL injuries, see #1.
6. Defense that can’t get off the field, see#1. Also players strengths did not match the scheme.

Could this group have played better, ABSOLUTELY, are they responsible for that debacle of a season, ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!

Primary causes for the debacle:
1. QB
2. Defending the run

Strength and conditioning addresses most needs; QB decision making (on and off the field) have to wait and see. Meggett to DC is a big plus.

As bad as last season was imagine if the “D” could have managed one “three and out” in each quarter, what a difference it would have made.

Let’s hope all of these things together make for a much better team than last season. The potential is there

The players are raving about Coach Pollard. Let’s hope it translate on the field; especially the 4th quarter.

I believe Pollard’s work with these guys will be the single biggest difference maker for the 2012 football season.

I’m hearing Levick was upset that we didn’t hire Versace as our Defensive Coordinator.

You can see the difference with Pollard already as far weight gains over the winter

First thing I always look at and compare is the guys who put on quality weight with Pollard.

Here’s a quick read list:

Offense
RB Donald Russell = +3lbs
WR Albert Wilson = +5lbs
WR Danny Williams = +10lbs
TE Drew Pearson = +5lbs
RT Grant King = +10lbs
RT Ramell Davis = +10lbs

Defense
DE AJ Portee = -10lbs
DT CJ Stephens = +10lbs
DE/LB Allen McKay = +3lbs
OLB Akeen Felder = +5lbs
S D’Mario Gunn = +5lbs
CB Jamal Ransby = +5lbs
CB Nate Anthony = +5lbs

I have noticed in the past on these blogs that when Georgia Southern fans have joined in, you Panther fans jumped all over them with insults about gnats, Statesboro, media markets, etc. But today, with no Georgia Southern participants, there have only been eleven, that’s right 11, comments on this blog since 8:00AM. Maybe we really are the only reason you have to live as you pass us by and move onto the mighty SunBelt (invitation pending). So let’s get it started……

G State Ben….were you called Stats in high school? Are you still called that now?

GSUAlumhitintheheadwithabaseballbatin81…..spew your usual venom, I know it’s been pent up for several weeks now.

Panama….are you back in your hometown of Panama City for spring break working at your dad’s frozen yogurt stand? That extra cash will come in handy to buy some more Panther magnets for your bike.

Would be nice to do well enough this season for Curry to stick around – he clearly still has the desire, and shouldn’t have to deal with political crap at this point in his career.
