Curry on GSU’s DC search — updated with another candidate

Georgia State coach Bill Curry will interview five more candidates for the defensive coordinator position, and hopes to have a hire made by March 9.

Curry has interviewed Anthony Midget, who is on staff as the Panthers’ special teams coordinator and safeties coach. Curry said that interview went well. When asked, Curry said he will also interview former Old Dominion defensive coordinator Andy Rondeau. Curry declined to name the other candidates. Rondeau declined to comment.

Curry said his interview with Midget went very well.

Rondeau was not retained by coach Bobby Wilder after the 2011 season. He had been in charge of the Monarchs’ defense for five seasons. ODU had the third-best run defense in the CAA last season (143.7 yards per game) but were 10th in pass defense  (242.4 ypg). They were seventh in scoring defense (27.8). Before ODU, Rondeau worked at Maine in 2006 as special teams coordinator. He was also the asst. defensive coordinator in Buffalo (2004-05) and the defensive coordinator at Tennessee-Martin (2003) during his coaching career. While at ODU, Rondeau recruited Virginia’s Hampton Roads area, which has produced numerous college players.

Curry has been looking because former defensive coordinator John Thompson resigned last week to take a similar position at Arkansas State.

Curry said the finalists have a variety of experiences and some have been coordinators; some are through the NFL, some at the FBS level and some at FCS.

“All are really sharp guys,” he said.

Curry said his contract, which ends next year, hasn’t affected the search. Curry has said many times that he won’t decide if he’s going to sign an  extension until the upcoming season is over. He said he has told each candidate about his situation so they can decide if they still want to pursue the opportunity.

Curry recently moved spring practice back a week to try to have the defensive coordinator hired and in-house by then. Practice will start March 14 and end April 6. The spring scrimmage will be March 31 at the practice facility.

Curry said he could move the start back by another week if a hire hasn’t been made, but he doesn’t think that will be necessary.

Thanks Doug. Could you ask Mrs. Levick why she refuses to appear on some of the sport radio talk shows that have requested for her to take a few minutes to update everyone on athletics at Ga State. No offense, but if you get hit by a car the alumni will probably be in the dark on everything involving State’s athletics. That being said I really appreciate what you have done for us thus far, but we want to know the master plan.

There’s a lot of excitement and anticipation surrounding GSU sports right now…DC hiring, FBS prospects, CAA tourney, and probably lots of other things involving initialisms.

PantherTalk.com has confirmed from a source in Norfolk that former Old Dominion Defensive Coordinator Andy Rondeau is a candidate for our DC job. He is expected to be interviewed this week.

“What would you like to know? It may have already been asked and answered.”

Wow where do I start….

How about what day will you hire the new DC? Who are the ones being interviewed other than Midget.
What is your immediate plan if Curry doesn’t renew his contract?
Have you spoken with a potential replacement or will you react to his decision and start interviewing after he says no (if he does say no) to a contract ext.
Is there a master plan on moving to the FBS? If so what conference and when.
Is Panthersville coming down town? If so and when?
I would like a picture and map of where the facility will be located and what it will look like.
When will the Sports Arena renovation begin?

Blue land, some of these can’t be answered.
1. She’s not going to answer this.
2. I imagine she will hire another coach.
3. She has said many times she hasn’t.
4. There is no master plan for the FBS, per se. There is, however, a feasibility study should they receive an invitation from a FBS conference. Many schools commission these reports.
5. GSU would like to move Panthersville, but they have to have A. money and B. land.
6. Can’t have one until A. money is in and B. land has been bought.
7. When they have the money. I think the cost is like $30 million, but that’s off the top of my head. It’s in the Q&A I posted with her from last year.

Our AD needs to take a Communication 101 course. It is evident that she does a poor job with communication in general. This applies to people within Athletics and outside. And, perhaps yelling at people/coaches is the way she does business. And, if things fail it is always someone else fault and also should learn the definition of accountability. Here it is:

ACCOUNTABILITY: the quality or state of being accountable; especially : an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one’s actions

Doug,

Thanks for the answers. Just curious though……If a company needs to raise significant money how do they do that without revealing plans to potential donors? Money doesn’t magically appear.

Doug,
You have seen the plans for what?
Sports Arena or Panthersville?
I’ve seen the Sports Arena along with all PAC contributors.
Have you seen the plans for Panthersville? To be specific will Panthersville be located on top of the Fort Street Apts that is about to be bulldozed? If not where will it be located?

Let me take this opportunity to thank you again. Seems like my questions should be answered by someone on the Ga State payroll, but I will take what I can get and you sir have done an outstanding job.

I’m just happy Thompson is gone. I thought Curry should have man’d up and fired him. That would have made CBC appear that he is managing the program and wants us to progress. I thought Wilder’s stock went way up when he canned his DC after the loss to GASO.

[...] The Atlanta Journal Constitution and other outlets mentioned several experienced candidates as potential replacements for John Thompson who took his talents to Arkansas State of the Sun Belt, Midget makes the most sense today as Spring practice begins next week. [...]
