Georgia State coach Bill Curry will interview five more candidates for the defensive coordinator position, and hopes to have a hire made by March 9.
Curry has interviewed Anthony Midget, who is on staff as the Panthers’ special teams coordinator and safeties coach. Curry said that interview went well. When asked, Curry said he will also interview former Old Dominion defensive coordinator Andy Rondeau. Curry declined to name the other candidates. Rondeau declined to comment.
Curry said his interview with Midget went very well.
Rondeau was not retained by coach Bobby Wilder after the 2011 season. He had been in charge of the Monarchs’ defense for five seasons. ODU had the third-best run defense in the CAA last season (143.7 yards per game) but were 10th in pass defense (242.4 ypg). They were seventh in scoring defense (27.8). Before ODU, Rondeau worked at Maine in 2006 as special teams coordinator. He was also the asst. defensive coordinator in Buffalo (2004-05) and the defensive coordinator at Tennessee-Martin (2003) during his coaching career. While at ODU, Rondeau recruited Virginia’s Hampton Roads area, which has produced numerous college players.
Curry has been looking because former defensive coordinator John Thompson resigned last week to take a similar position at Arkansas State.
Curry said the finalists have a variety of experiences and some have been coordinators; some are through the NFL, some at the FBS level and some at FCS.
“All are really sharp guys,” he said.
Curry said his contract, which ends next year, hasn’t affected the search. Curry has said many times that he won’t decide if he’s going to sign an extension until the upcoming season is over. He said he has told each candidate about his situation so they can decide if they still want to pursue the opportunity.
Curry recently moved spring practice back a week to try to have the defensive coordinator hired and in-house by then. Practice will start March 14 and end April 6. The spring scrimmage will be March 31 at the practice facility.
Curry said he could move the start back by another week if a hire hasn’t been made, but he doesn’t think that will be necessary.
