Georgia State will begin spring football practice on March 6.
While that’s still several days away, here’s something to tide you over: the pre-spring depth chart.
I would caution not to read too much into these things. There’s still a lot of practices between now and the season-opener against South Carolina State at the Georgia Dome.
But, it’s such a beautiful, go-outside-and-play-football type of day, here you go. I’ll hope you post your thoughts in the comment section (starting with first-string on down):

Love Dex at the hybrid position. D’Mario Gunn at Safety is a huge upgrade replacing Brandon Jones. He is a ball hawk.
You can see the areas where the Freshman are going to play right away: Center (Ruskell), Defensive End (King) and Defensive Tackle (Lockley).

Front 7 as constructed (using 2011 weights) weighs 1662lbs. This is a 22lbs decrease from 2011.
Time to to put some MAJOR work in fellas. We have to stop the run in 2012.

The first thing that jumped out at me is the fact that the 2010 starting running back is dead last on the depth chart.

Looks about right. QB behind Kelton will obviously change. Expect a lot of movement on the left side of the OL starting with the C. Not sure what Cole Moon is doing at Defensive End.

@J-GSU it is very strange. They cannot seem to find a spot for a kid. Coming out of HS he was probably our highest “ranked” recruit.
Talk about speed, strength, and technique all you want. But at some points in games you are going to have to line man to man and stop someone on short yardage.

Well since you asked, I will tell you. “I’m gonna say it one more time. We are Georgia Southern. Our colors are blue and white. We call ourselves the Bald Eagles. We call our offense the Georgia Power Company … and that’s a terrific name for an offense. Our snap count is ‘rate, hike.’ We practice on the banks of Beautiful Eagle Creek and that’s in Statesboro, Georgia – the gnat capital of America. Our weekends begin on Thursday. The coeds outnumber the men,
3-2. They’re all good-looking and they’re all rich. And folks, you just can’t beat that … and you just can’t beat Georgia Southern. And you ain’t seen nothin yet! ….”

I say both GSU and GaSo stay quiet until we finally play each other. The QB chart made my eyebrow raise a little. Just underscores the fact that it is VERY early by the fact that Schlecter is still on there and ahead of McClane. I hope he can earn a spot somewhere else but I just don’t see him taking any more snaps at GSU.

@GSU_MEX_ALUM- I know you all are excited about the prospects of moving to FBS, but you have not accomplished anything in the FCS yet! I dont think moving to FBS will fare any better for you in terms of winning seasons, conference championships, or least of all, National Champs. FBS will just make you a low-to-mid major, wont increase your season ticket sales, merchandise, etc.

One thing that I missed seeing last year were big plays from Danny Williams, and I hope that he can get that connection going again with whomever gets the starting QB role. Albert Wilson helped make up for the lack of Danny’s big plays, but having both of them getting somewhat even amounts of opportunities will only help this offense.

You guys dont get the point. We know we will not be in the BCS National Title. But Mid Major FBS > FCS. Period. Just the facts, no smack. Whatever happens it will have no effect on GaSouthern. Take Care

I look forward to Kennesaw getting their football team. Unfortunately for them, it appears now is the time to be trying to move to FBS. I think GSU benefits also from being a research university. That plus our high enrollment really is what is pushing us athletically.

Within the state university system there are 4 research universities – Tech, UGA, MCG (now GHSU) and GA State. GA Southern is considered a regional university, not a research university. Three have football within the research universities. http://www.usg.edu/inst/group

Carnegie has 3 classifications for doctoral granting institutions. Tech, UGA, and GA State all are in the highest category – RU/VH: Research Universities (very high research activity). GA Southern is in the lowest category – DRU: Doctoral/Research Universities. This classification by Carnegie is different than what is set by the University System of Georgia. USG classifies GA Southern as a regional university. See http://classifications.carnegiefoundation.org/descriptions/basic.php

Since we’re talking about truth. Let me enlighten you Georgia Southern trolls. You trolls love to point out our weak losses in our first two years of existence. So I began to ponder, how did these clowns do in their first two years. Let’s see:
Your first two years under ERK RUSSELL, you lost to something called a CATAWBA and something called a NEWBERRY. Both were NAIA schools at the time, now D-2! See what a little research does? Eh?
So go STEW on that as we have FBS things to deal with!

You lost to a school THAT NO LONGER EXISTS! In our first two years, we were busy beating teams like Central Florida! We meanwhile went 8-3 in our third year and won titles in our fourth and fifth season. If Georgia State even makes the playoffs by year five, it would be a humorous miracle.

Your players are pretty terrible right now. Thats to be expected. You will get better. Its got to be embarrassing getting beat by some of those no name teams though. Did you guys watch the Georgia Southern vs Alabama game. Hell when you watched that game you felt like there were two really good teams out there. I mean GSU moved the ball more on them than any other team the whole season. 315 yrds rushing against that Bama Defense. WOW! Your team may get there some time. My dad and mom both graduated from Ga State. Good school. Maybe you guys can get your football team going. Its hard to watch I no, especially when you loose to teams like Meat Loaf State. I noticed you guys arguing alot with GSU fans alot. I wouldnt waste my time with them yet, you guys have a ways to go before yall are on that level. You can argue academics with them even though theirs has gotten much better over the last few years and is probably as good as any school in the state now. Just dont get in to it over football with them, that doesnt look good for you guys.
Oh looks like your depth chart is shaping up nicely.

Georgia Southern lost to something called a Catabwa and something called a Newberry. I don’t care who you beat, you still LOST. So go mind your own blog; that’s if you have one. We got bigger fish to fry than to go back and forth against a FCS school stuck in GNATVILLE, USA. See ya!

@Rhino, what grade are you in? That has to be one of the most poorly written paragraphs I have ever read. Oh yeah, it is lose, not loose.
Southern fans, you beat Central Florida when they weren’t even an FBS school…wooptedoo! They moved on from the middle school game (aka FCS) and are now in a BCS conference, where does that leave you? I think it leaves you with losses to NAIA teams CATABWA & NEWBERRY and a loss to Div. 2 WEST GEORGIA!
