GSU at No. 24 in mid-major poll

Georgia State’s men’s basketball team debuted at No. 24 in the Mid-Major Top 25 poll published by collegeinsider.com.

The Panthers (13-4, 5-1) are one of three teams from the Colonial Athletic Association in the poll. Georgia Mason is No. 14 and VCU is No. 19.

Georgia State is about to begin a stretch of four games in eight days, starting with a two-game road swing at Northeastern on Wednesday, followed by at Delaware on Saturday. The Panthers will then return home to host James Madison before hitting the road again to face Drexel on Jan. 25.

This is an important stretch for the Panthers.

As you may have read, coach Ron Hunter wasn’t happy with the team’s effort in Saturday’s win over Towson.

“The effort wasn’t there,” he said. “I don’t think it was because they didn’t want to play. I think it was a buildup of a lot of different things. At the end of day you are going to have nights that way. We didn’t dive for loose balls.

“You can never have a bad night with effort. I thought we took that for granted.”

If they can bounce back and sweep this two-game road swing, they will increase the chances of earning a bye for the first round of the CAA tournament.

However, that won’t be easy. The Huskies are 4-2 in the conference, winners of their past three and five of their past six. The Blue Hens are 3-3, and have lost their past two home games to Old Dominion and Virginia Commonwealth.

None of the CAA games are going to be easy, especially on the road. I hope Hunter has these guys ready to play inspired bball because what we saw on Saturday wasn’t up to par.

I hope we come away 4 for 4 before the VCU game, but none of these CAA games are going to be easy, especially on the road.

It will also be interesting to see if they respond back strongly after the Towson game. They were sloppy. If it was anyone besides Towson we would have lost. I really hope to see our FT percentage go up. I do not believe that we can beat a lot of these teams on the road if we keep missing as many FT as we have been. We have been at about 60% FT team of recent. If that can go up, and the play of White be a little more consistent, then I believe that we will be a team to be reckoned with in postseason tournaments.

Southern pays the AJC to have their ads online.

The AJC pays their employees to cover GSU, not the other way around.

BTW, thanks for pointing out all of the GSU coverage that is on the sports front page, we really like having multiple sports articles in the same day.

You’re right. I’m sure Mark Bradley and other bloggers for the AJC also have to pay to get into the sold out “Sports Arena” and the Georgia Dome, home of the Falcons. No way they get free tickets.

It works both ways.

The media never have to pay to get into sporting events, and yes they would get in free at Southern if they wanted to.

Your argument is still terrible b/c you brought up Southern coverage on the AJC and I pointed out that you paid for it and we did not, and now you are talking about getting into sporting events for free…the spin zone is here!

Been looking all over the Savannah newspapers for some Georgia State coverage. Can’t seem to find any. Even tried searching Lambuth and Saint Francis ((IL), of course).

Also, we paid for coverage for our academics. Hardly a comparison to athletics. If anyone is “spinning” out of control, I’d say it’s the boys from Hurt Park.

What is wrong with this guy?? I have nothing against GA Southern (although this guy might change my mind), but I don’t understand why you don’t go read the Savannah paper or the Statesboro paper (if they have one) if you are bothered by GSU’s coverage or success.

Anyways let’s sweep the yankee road games, and get the sports arena bumping for JMU.
Go Panthers.

We need to win these next 3 games before going up to Drexel which at this point looks tough. Win the next 3 then get at least one again Drexel / VCU and we will be in good position!

I am nervous, because winning on the road in the CAA is difficult and has been extremely tough for us in general over past years!!!

Let’s win the games that we should win. Make FT’s, block out, and score the ball!!!

Go State!

Good luck at Northeastern. It is an especially tough place to play. They put the basketball floor down on top of their ice rink; it’s chilly. In addition, there is no backdrop behind the baskets; it’s all open, so it’s tough for any player to spot up on the rim. Their players are used to it.
If you weren’t aware, NE is a primarily ice hockey school – sports-wise; sure they have had a few decent basketball teams. When their fans come down for the CAA tournament, they wear ice hockey jerseys…more than strange.

These are all winnable games… We just need to play with that same intensity and toughness from the beginning of the season. Make us proud, Panthers!
