What they said after Georgia State’s loss

Quotes following Georgia State’s 30-27 overtime loss to St. Francis, courtesy of GSU’s sports information department.

Georgia State Head Coach Bill Curry

There are not any words for that. Except to say, for one more embarrassing fourth quarter performance, we apologize to the Georgia State Community. If we understood the syndrome, we would have corrected it by now. It is a pattern that has just been devastating to us that we bring on ourselves. I honestly believe that it is very much the head coach’s responsibility to prevent these types of things, when it happens over and over and over and it doesn’t change. If I could go back and start over I don’t know what I would do differently and that is another sad thing. It is an embarrassment. The other team of course did a marvelous job. They are a good team but this shouldn’t have happened and we all know that. It would be nice to sit here and speak in platitudes but there aren’t any platitudes and there is nowhere to go except go back to work and try to correct it. We have two more games to play this year.

How devastating or disappointing was that poor kickoff after your field goal that gave them the short field to be able to come down and at least give themselves a chance to tie the game?

Well it was very disappointing. Matt Ehasz has not kicked in a game except one extra point in the first game this year. Christian Benvenuto injured himself in the pregame so Matt came on and kicked for us and did a good job except for that kick. On the last attempt, that was out of his range and we just had to try it. But the kick off that went out of bounds, that was significant.

Were they doing anything on offense that was more complicated than it looked to keep generating those big plays?

They were running by us and we weren’t tackling them. They were blocking us. There was nothing more complicated than that. We knew what they were doing but just didn’t get the job done.

Did y’all overlook this team?

Absolutely not. We took it seriously. We knew they were good. Craig Harmon used to coach there. They are having the best year in their history. It is possible certain members of the team didn’t take it seriously, but we certainly did not overlook them.

When you look at the heights and weights between your offensive line and their front seven, it looks like there was a significant advantage in your favor. You seemed like you were trying to run the ball a lot but then stopped. What were you seeing that was behind that decision?

They stacked the box. They put an extra tackler in there which is what you do when you intend to stop the run. There were pass opportunities all the time but we still wanted to run the ball in spite of the extra tackler and felt like we could. The times that we didn’t run very well we were either outnumbered or we didn’t block well enough.

Is this the most disappointing loss in your coaching career?

Well I think if I say that then that is saying St. Francis didn’t deserve it. They deserved to win. They won the game. They played better than we did and I don’t want to diminish that. It is very, very disappointing.

It seemed like the offensive play calling in the first overtime was a little conservative. Can you talk about that?

I think that is true, that we were conservative. What had gone in in the game prior to that, we probably should have done it differently, obviously. That doesn’t mean that we didn’t think the play would work that we called. We thought it was a good call. We didn’t think it was conservative, but in retrospect thinking about it there are some other things we could have done that would have had a better chance of succeeding.

Put a top on this circus or just roll this thing to curb on Monday. Thats when the trash gets taken out. It is to a point where this fine University has to really decide if this is really worth embarrassing ourselves. First Lambuth. Now this. The CAA is going to destroy us. Period. Quick comment is right on the money. A few weeks ago I was called a troll for pointing out the obvious and now I have another person willing to say the obvious. No offense to GSU but remember the CAA is a very good conference — GSU is in big trouble. I keep hoping for better play b/c it is better for the rest of the conference to add a good program. This is not it. When is the Curry contract up?

This is really rough. I am a huge Curry fan but this loss is unspeakable. Curry and his staff have to make some big changes immediately. I knew that there would be growing pains this season but nothing like this. Losses like this put the program on life support with the newly born fan base…

His contract is up next year. Our AD tried to extend his contract another three years but Curry declined. I think he realized he might not be the man for the job either. Great leader and motivator but his overall record speaks for itself.

BTW…many don’t know this but Curry is the highest paid FCS football coach. 350k a year!!!

I remember when these fans were talking like they were going to the Big East. I bet the CAA is kicking themselves for this invite. Two losses to the NAIA. Wow. But we are in Atlanta…blah blah. Yeah, media market a program doesn’t make. Ask Northeastern in Boston, Towson in Baltimore and countless more. Football is expensive. Ga St won’t keep propping this garbage up forever. Can you even, for a moment, imagine the reaction from the recruits Ga St had in that Dome full of 4,500 in a 70,000 seated arena? And then to see this school lose to a NAIA high school in front of an empty building in downtown Atlanta? With 30,000 plus students and, apparently, 29,500 of those with something better to do on a Saturday? No thanks.

Football is expensive. And its about to get more expensive in the CAA. And with 30.000 plus students and 29,500 having something better to do, GSU has to take a serious look at whether this is worth continuing. Can you imagine what possible recruits in that empty building must have been thinking? Yikes. Give me Lefty and a good BB program and shut this thing on down.

WHY would you even bother to suit up and play the game if you were going to fall apart in the 4th Qtr? So you waste 45 minutes of lackluster effort only to fall apart for what?? Check the stats coach Bond, UWA put up 20 points in the 4th Qtr against Delta State. You’ll need to be up 35 by the 4th to give us a chance to win. Also, we should have been up in this game 35-0 by the half. You SUCK BOND and you need to go now. I will personally give the University a donation to match your contract if they will just please get rid of you. If you stay, I am done with wasting my time on this garbage program. Hey Guys, you gotta crawl before you can walk and you gotta walk before you can run.
Georgia Southern played club football for three years at Statesboro high school before they started playing for keeps in their own stadium.
The size of the student body isn’t all that important. Wofford is in the top ten in FCS and only has 1,500 students.
Southern only beat the Citidel today because they blocked two extra points. The Citidel has 3,000 students. Southern has 20,000.
Hang in there State, Southern needs an in state rival.

Looking back at the pictures from the game today, I came up with two positives. One, with only like 12 students there, there weren’t a lot of students that saw a loss to another NAIA school. And two, if you squint, St. Francis looks like Notre Dame in those gold domes.

There are a lot of things in sports that can be justified. This is not one of those. You guys should do fine in Conference USA. They dig programs that don’t draw flies, don’t travel and lose to schools that don’t recruit much outside of direct mail (truer reference to NAIA than you would like to think). Shutting down the program is a horrible idea. Dear lord, it has been two seasons. Yes this season is a failure. Honestly, it probably wont be our last one that we feel that way either, but we need to get through this season and see what happens. Maybe after a decade of losing we can talk about continuing the program. The program is really not costing the school nearly as much as people like to think that it is, $300K+ pay days from Houston, Alabama, and etc help out with that. This season I do believe that changes need to be made. I do not know if that is coaching changes or what. I agree that what I think the 3-4 defense needs to go. Play calling must be better. Simple mistakes like clock management needs to be fixed. Please, if you are going to suspend Drew Little for every game then just kick him off the team. A guy like that has to be a cancer for a locker room. Stick with a starting quarterback for the rest of the season and make it his to lose in the off season. Even though I do believe that Coach Curry is making some bad decisions, I believe firing him will be a much worse one. I personally believe that every coach deserves at least 3 years with his players. If we fire him, we will start from scratch all over again and go through this horribly painful process of a sophomore slump again.

Maybe you got to FCS a little too quickly. Why not play in Div II for a few years until you prove you can win? Then you could move up. You might also consider playing in a more intimate stadium. One you can fill, Herndon comes to mind .
Troy went from Div II to what was then 1-AA to 1-A in just a few years. With the facilities you have available in Atlanta, you ought to be able to do it too. The only problem is you have to compete with the Falcons and Tech for fans that aren’t alums.
I’m a true blue Ga Southern grad and fan, but I’d love to see y’all succeed.
By the way. get that “we’re from the ATL ” line out of your fight song. It sounds really, really stupid. What would you think of a school from New York that sang “We’re from the NYC”? The first thing that comes to my mind is “Well, bless your heart, aren’t you special?” and I mean that in the most sarcastic way you can imagine.
Do USC and UCLA have a line about being from LA?

I agree about the “we’re from the ATL” – seems like gag state went to huge lengths to try and distinguish themselves from that poor ol farmers school down in the sticks. blue white, followed by stating GSU and then spelling out ga state…..really? it’s almost like they were in a hurry to use up any associated gsu reference just to say, tell all your fans and alums to stop using the phrase gsu in everyday conversations, we have it in our fight song so its ours…………their whole program is laughable, i just youtube’d their fight song and thought someone pulled a weird al on them, but no, apparently that IS their fight song…ahahahahahaha…why not just go ahead and make the chorus….that other school that calls themself gsu is not the real gsu, we’re the real gsu, we are in the ATL and they are in the country so everyone start calling them by their full name instead of using our commonly shared acronym…oh by the way can someone call grambling state and tell them as well……….again…#NAIA

I in no way want any part of being confused for Georgia State. Their Web site is already gsu.edu and most ‘SU monikers refer to the school with the state designated in the name. To be honest, GASOU is more unique and has “GA’ “S’ and ‘U.’ I also think the ‘SOU’ best reflects who we are. We are Southern. Our colors are Blue and White. And you just can’t beat Georgia Southern. The loss to tiny Saint Francis is embarrassing enough. But in my opinion, more embarrassing is the lack of student support for football. That Saturday was Cheerleader/Band Day with about 600 cheerleaders and about 800 band kids from various high schools. Sadly, excluding the GSU Band, there were less than 200 people in the ’student section.’ I kept looking at the student section hoping the students would arrive but they did not show up. How sad is that?

@PantherAlum – how does bama destroying us affect the SoCon? We play Wofford for the outright, and if UTC beats them the next week, doesn’t matter what we do. We were in the semis last year….that’s short for semi-finals…of the, you know..playoffs….the place Southern has been umpteen times and that place gag state won’t ever be. Your football ignorance shows at every level. From thinking gag state is fbs to thinking Southern can’t win the SoCon because we lost to our strongest rival, in which the series is something like 14-13-1, yeah…..please, continue to enlighten us all how the one FCS school in the state that has accomplished something is irrelevant. Maybe you should focus on how you can invite more high school bands in the area to your home games to boost attendance. Or you can talk about how coke has a promotion to give away gag state car flags and that’s just the bees knees because then everyone will be driving around with panther flags on their car. Yeah, please continue, you’re proving your point real well. Those polls don’t mean anything anyway. That’s why FCS has playoffs. I personally hated the fact we have been number 1 for more than half the season. We’re 8-1 with one FCS game left in our season before the playoffs. I understand its hard for a gag state fan to grasp the concept of a playoff system. We have a half game lead in the SoCon but yet, we won’t ever win it???
