Curry press conference today

Georgia State coach Bill Curry will hold his weekly press conference today ahead of this weekend’s homecoming game against South Alabama.

As many of know, the Panthers are in a bit of a slump. Losers of their past five games, they are having difficulty playing consistently well in any area.

So, I’ll open the floor to you: What would you like me to ask Curry today during his press conference? I’ll try to ask as many of your questions as I can, and will post the answers later today.

Please ask legitimate questions, and not questions about hirings or firings, etc.

Bit of a slump? Yeah, and the World Wide Web has been a bit of technological breakthrough. How about asking him how much flour it would take to put this grease fire of a program out?

Please ask CBC what he and the administration can do to get more students out to the games. Do they not realize that it’s THEIR football team? We need more than a couple hundred students at games when we have 30K enrolled!

“Please ask legitimate questions, and not questions about hirings or firings, etc.”

That about sums up the state of this program.

Please ask him the following:
1). Why is Donald Russell consistently absent in the 4th Qtr?
2). Why can we not stop long drives by opponents in the 4th Qtr?
3). Are we ever going to see a screen pass?
4). Who will be our starting QB for USA game?
5). Why are our receivers not getting down field touches like we did last year?
6). Why in his opinion have opposing coaches consistently called us “predicable”?
7). Do our linebackers understand that when the offensive line “stands up” that it’s going to be a pass play 95% of the time?
8). Why in his opinion have we not scored a single point in the 4th Qtr all year after the 1st game?
9) Will we ever see a fade route again?
10). How does next year’s recruiting look like and is he concentrating on the O and D lines?

Panther4life pretty much summed up everything I want to know. Ask all of his questions!

I can answer most of these without having to ask Curry:
1. Because you’ve been too far behind in most games to use him effectively.
2. Curry answered that last week. Said the defense isn’t disciplined enough.
5. Yall have thrown quite a few downfield passes this year, just haven’t put them on the mark.
6. i haven’t heard that.
8. Goes back to execution and being in almost pass-exclusive situations.

How about ask at what point do the excuses for losing games stop and real action takes place? It’s great to hear an apology after every loss, but eventually something needs to change. I’m not sure what that is, but something must be changed or you can expect the same results. Can’t just wait for an easier opponent to get a win. Good teams find ways to win games without making excuses. There is just too much good individual talent on this team for them to be losing like they are.

@ Doug

I think we have been closer than you think at the end of the 3rd quarters to not play Russell. I mean anything has to be better than what has consistently not worked for every 4th quarter.

You should ask him anyways, what could it hurt?

Doug, regarding #6 go back and listen to both the ODU and Jax St. press conferences and you will hear them refer to the offense being predictable.

Okay here’s more:
1). Has he considered due to our O-lines’ inability of picking up blocks to perhaps run either Russell or Evans out of the I to provide an additional blocker?
2). Given the QB issues we have had without changing the past in terms of suspensions etc would he have done something different(i.e. let Little or Hill start Game #2, or maybe play Mclane from the beginning)?
3). Overall why does it appear from the sidelines that we consistently seem disoriented on defense is it because we cannot handle the hurry up offense?
4). What is his gut feeling on why Drew Little’s play has deteriorated so dramatically from last season?
5). Overall has he seen a change from a S&C standpoint with the addition on Ben Pollard?

I’ll post some answers, both mine and some Curry provided, later this afternoon.

The last batch of questions didn’t arrive in time for the press conference. Here are answers to some of the questions. Some of them are mine, some of them are Curry’s and some of them I didn’t ask because they wouldn’t have been answered.

Please ask him the following:
1). Why is Donald Russell consistently absent in the 4th Qtr? Because yall haven’t been in too many games in the fourth quarter. Russell is more of a power runner than a receiver. Plus, until last week, Russell hasn’t been 100-percent healthy, according to Curry.
2). Why can we not stop long drives by opponents in the 4th Qtr? Curry said if he had the answer to that he’d fix it. Mark Hogan said the players are comfortable in the scheme, and know the scheme, they just need to make plays. He said the South Carolina State’s final drive is an example. He said they were in the right positions, they just failed to make the plays.
3). Are we ever going to see a screen pass? Didn’t ask.
4). Who will be our starting QB for USA game? Kelton Hill. Drew Little won’t play this week.
5). Why are our receivers not getting down field touches like we did last year? You have thrown downfield some. Keep in mind that Schlechter, who has played most of four games this season, isn’t as accurate a passer as Little was last year. Plus, you’ve been in far too many pass-only situations that eliminate most downfield passes.
6). Why in his opinion have opposing coaches consistently called us “predicable”? Didn’t get a chance to ask, but I assume that consistently playing from behind tends to simplify schemes for both teams.
7). Do our linebackers understand that when the offensive line “stands up” that it’s going to be a pass play 95% of the time? Didn’t ask.
8). Why in his opinion have we not scored a single point in the 4th Qtr all year after the 1st game? Again, said if he knew he’d fix it. Again, playing from behind, in which you have to pass on most downs, makes it that much more difficult to score.
9) Will we ever see a fade route again? Didn’t ask. No idea if you haven’t run fade routes, though it is a difficult pass to throw.
10). How does next year’s recruiting look like and is he concentrating on the O and D lines? Didn’t ask.

Great questions. I wish Coach Bond would open up on offense so we don’t get behind and become predictable, but if I was to have one wish for the program it would be for it to remain at GSU. I don’t want to go back to being an Alum of a school without football. I believe that is why most GSU bloggers are so passionate… we vent out of fear of losing the football program. I agree the team isn’t doing well, but I don’t want to lose the football program. As a fan I am confused on how I should feel with a 2nd year program and how to communicate my frustration when they lose, but for most people they just don’t attend the games. These are difficult times. Thoughts anyone??? and yes the GA Southern Trolls are welcome to voice their opinions as well.

@ Panther4life,

Great questions! I agree with the I formation in the backfield with Russell at fullback. It’s got to be better than the single back formation.

@Pride: I have similar feelings. I have been to some of the games this year and I don’t like paying money to see my team not even be competitive. At the same time, I understand that this whole thing is a building process and I know patience will be required. At the end of the day, I don’t think it is unreasonable for the fans to have expectations that the team at least looks prepared to play their particular opponent each week. In many of the games it looked like we were totally unprepared to play.

For those interested end of 3rd Q scores the last 2 games and touches for Russell:

Murray State – Down 35-24 – Russell rushed 4 times for 4 times for zero yards. Evans had 3 touches for 31 yards.
SC State – Tied at 13 – Russell has ZERO touches in the 4th quarter. Evans had 3 touches for 12 yards.
