GSU moves kickoff times in attempt to draw more fans

In an attempt to improve attendance, Georgia State has moved back kickoff times for three of its remaining four home football games at the Georgia Dome.

The games against Murray State (Oct. 8), St. Francis (Nov. 5) and Campbell (Nov. 19) will start at 2 p.m. The game against South Alabama (Oct. 22) will keep its 3 p.m. kickoff time.

Attendance for the season-opener against Clark Atlanta surpassed 25,000, including thousands of students. The next game against Old Dominion had an announced attendance of more than 11,000, with perhaps hundreds of students attending. The poor attendance was attributed to numerous campus activities going on at the same time, including rush for sororities.

In an attempt to improve the spirit at the games, Georgia State is asking for fans to wear white to the game against Murray State. Free t-shirts will be given to the first 5,000 fans through the gates.

Are we sure there will be 5,000 people there?

Pantherguy 2011 please go somewhere with the negative talk. We still have to make changes along the way. Maybe in the future it will show that the games may have to start at 3pm. We are still learning the system. Please be patient and have some faith. Will the real fans please stand up.

I believe changing the times, and winning will certainly help in attendance. I also think the marketing dept needs to regroup a little. While having a couple of billboards is great, I thought the blanketing of adds at Lenox mall was idiotic. No offense to Lenox, but it’s mostly a touristy mall. If we are going that route, northpoint, townlake, perimeter, mall of GA would probably be better. They really need to pound the alums with marketing and get the students’ families involved.

I am sure the homeless shelter next door to “your” stadium could use the 2500 extras.

If after 30 years GSU is still playing in the minor leagues, football will have been a failure.

Georgia State football will be fine. The recruiting ground is fertile, the AD is good, competitiveness will come, the school’s location is excellent. Have patience, this is just the second year. Fans will come as the tradition grows. Within 10 years, Georgia State will be in division one, whatever that’s called then. Georgia Teachers College will still be battling for King of the Minors.

GSU might want to try more Thursday and Friday night games to see if those first game attendances were because they were season openers or because being a school night means the students are there and will go.

I don’t think the “white out” against Murray State is a good idea. I’m sure it will look more red from the empty seats than white.

First things first; get fans to the game. Hopefully we can draw at least 14,000 to the Murray State game

Here’s novel idea… try winning some games. No school in the country will draw fans when they’re losing to a bad NAIA school at home.

Marketing department needs to regroup. Advertising at Lenox Mall is worthless. No offense but too touristy. If your going the mall route should go to Perimeter, Northpoint, Town Center, Mall of Georgia anywhere but Lenox. Also need to direct mail more to Alumni, and current students’ parents. Should have had Curry interviewed at Kell classic on GPTV next year, more advertising on Marta, at the 400 toll booth and remind folks that tickets can be purchased at Publix. Also should exploit Joe Hamilton’s GT connections.

I think we have done a pretty good job so far. Not sure what people were expecting but I think our team has been pretty competitive. Yes, we lost a game last year we shouldn’t have lost (Lambuth) but that was the second game ever. We are still playing mostly Sophmores and Freshmen and they are making mistakes that Sophs and Freshman make. We had a great chance last week against a ranked team but mistakes killed us. Be patient guys, we will be ok.

I completely agree with Theo. I’m proud of our guys out there, our solid coaching staff, our students and our new fans/alumni. The panther community will only grow more and has already grown exponentially in the last year and I think that this team will go far in the long-run. We just need to stay focused and quit getting so bent out of shape because we aren’t filling up the dome. As long as we are playing good ball, the fans will come. Even after a loss I’m still pumped up for the next game and know that I’m going to be there cheering them on. Go PANTHERS!

OK so I take back a little of what I said about coaching, but I’m trying not to condemn them for one game (Jacksonville St. game’s boneheaded calls). What I do see however is that we have 13 verbal commitments from recruits for 2012, we had a winning season our first season ever, no one has yet to say that we look like a 2nd year team, and we have have at least 2 talented QBs waiting to play. Yes, we’ve lost to the teams we were expected to loose against so far, but the season is not over. I doubt that CBC will have Bo starting in the Houston game, and depending on how Drew plays, we’ll be set for Murray as well.

Please excuse my optimism.

both of those posts were in response to those commenting on our fan attendance and the practical adjustments we are making to get the fans and students to be able to come out for the games. I was referencing people who actually comment on our FOOTBALL team, not our fanbase. My point (which I thought was clear) was that very few, if any, have said that GSU football looks like and is playing like a typical start-up team. In my humble opinion, we have been exceeding expectations, and I’m hoping to continue doing so. But what do I know?

Losing to Lambuth, having terrible personal fouls, having a punter play QB and having a QB play punter makes us look like a second year team.

Yeah, I was pumped last season to drive down for games from Rome but it’s hard to take the atmosphere in the dome seriously. Beers good. But this announcing 20000 when it’s probably closer to to 7k is a joke. Until we get a campus stadium, it’s all for naught. We will be just another urban team fighting to survive in athletics. I will say it’s good to see fans here less on the high horse. You guys were making it tough even for us fans to stomach with the high and mighty conference USA stuff. Glad to see reality. Let’s win some games, win some championships in colonial and let the rest take dare of itself.

No matter what I will not be defined by what 90 kids that I do not know do or don’t do on or off the field. My role is simply to root for my alma mater and I will do so no matter what.

No—- who is the real GSU fights this week. You guys are killing me! If you morons don’t start up we Yankees will not have anyone to make fun of….. my guess is that if the fake or real GSU (depends on your perspective) doesn’t improve in coaching you will get killed in the CAA. I am pulling for you guys but you are in a world of hurt. Nova or U of D or Murray State? I smell a 2 win season but I hope I am wrong.

I just looked at U of D schedule this year– AT BEST GSU would go 2-9 beating West Chester (13th grade) and Del State. Good luck– I hope a different team shows up this week.

Here’s an idea … target every SEC school that has a bye week the same time GSU has a home game. Invite four fraternities and sororities per game for an all expenses paid trip to Atlanta to train GSU students on the art of tailgating, socializing and supporting a big-time college athletics program …

only hundreds of students at the last game because of campus activities … Huh?

You ever been to the GSU campus early on a Saturday? I assure you it’s not a hub of activity.

Sororities can’t schedule a tea at the dome?… Geez

Just checked the score- I was pulling for you Panthers but…well…. you stink this year. I really think you’d go 0-11 in the CAA. Seems like you have a lot of issues– not ready for prime time? I’ll stop making fun of the who is the real GSU debaters.. because you folks are down. Perhaps you can sked a game or two with West Chester or Reading Area Community College– that might help. I’ll check back next year it has been real fun

I think that we need to start looking at the time, energy, and money that we spend on our football team as an investment. Are we great? No, we are not. We might be competitive, and if we are than that is something to be excited about. I do not really believe we will be great for 5 to 10 years, and I do not see us making a significant jump to a FBS conference for another 15 to 20 years at minimum. But we are building. We are investing. We are getting stronger. We are going to the games to let the media, administration, and players know that this is our team now. We will stand behind you. It will not always be easy, but we will do it. That is what a true fan is.

One more thing to my fellow GSU fans, other schools do indeed fear us. The older orders of Delaware and Ga Southern do not want to see a new kid coming in. They do not like it. Again, lets be honest, both of those schools could beat the crap out of us right now, but they are not worried about this year. They are worried about two years from now, ten years from now. They see the greatness in us the same way as we see the greatness in us, and that makes them feel threatened. We should take pride in this fear.

As a PROUD GSU Fan, I don’t care what any of you negative fans from other schools have to say. We are a young team… winning will come with maturity. So say what you want because it makes no difference, I will root for my school NO MATTER WHAT. And to all the Delaware and Georgia Southern haters out there, who really cares what you have to say? You are scared (as you should be) because GSU is on the upswing both academically and athletically. If you didn’t feel threatened, there would be no need for you to comment on this blog…
