News from Curry’s press conference

A few tidbits from today’s press conference. Georgia State will face Houston at 8 p.m. Saturday. The game will be broadcast on CSS. It can be heard on  1160, 1690 and 88.5.

1. Curry said he made some “boneheaded calls” during the Jacksonville State, notably the decision to have a quick-kick. The Gamecocks blocked the kick and returned it for a touchdown.

“Things like that drain an immature team,” he said. “Can’t have head coach mistakes, you just can’t.”

He declined to go into the specifics of other examples because he said he didn’t want to embarrass anyone. He did say they could have been more aggressive in some of their play-calls. “Things we had to Albert Wilson we could have used earlier and more often.”

On defense, “when it was clear that Coty Blanchard had our number, we probably should have gotten out of the blitz.”

2. The team needs more mental discipline. As evidence he cited the three personal foul penalties that contributed to Jacksonville State scoring drives.

“Work on it daily in practice. You might get punched in sternum during the pile….”

3. Demarius Matthews will take over return duties for the injured Albert Wilson (hamstring). Darren McCray is back to full speed and will take some of Wilson’s time at wide receiver.

“He comes closest to running as fast as Albert,” Curry said.

4. When asked if the quarterback situation and rotation will be the same as last week, Curry said no. When asked how the rotation may change, he said he hasn’t decided. When asked if Kelton Hill will be included in the rotation, Curry declined to say, other than “Kelton is making his way back to be a part of the team in the most courageous way.”

I’ll have more this week on if Georgia State thinks it can slow down Houston quarterback Case Keenum.

Well there you go. All of you calling me out because I criticized the coaching.

@No More

No one called you out for criticizing the coaches. Folks were merely stating that not renewing season tickets because of the “bone-headed” decisions of the coaching staff was unfair to the kids and program as a whole. The coaches will come and go. GSU will alway be here!

Curry and staff have embarrassed us these last two weeks by not playing the best players available. Obviously all hands were not on deck as we were led to believe. It really doesn’t matter who plays this week as Houston will probably lay a 70 burger on us. Yeah, go ahead and start Bo again so that more people will look down on us because they have no idea we are starting our 4th string signal caller from last year; in addition, we are struggling kicking the ball as our top punter is said 4th string QB. Just got to love the impression we are leaving on folks!

Well I’m glad CBC is taking responsibility. I think he’s an incredible guy but his judgement has lacked this season. I hope Bo is put back punting and Drew us starting, that would make me feel a whole lot better. I still have hope for the season, it’s not over yet, in fact its only just beginning.

If Kelton isn’t going to play QB then how about letting him return kickoffs? Don’t risk Mathews since he will be on the field frequently on Saturday defending agsinst the Case Keenum arial show. I’m certain KH4 has the hand eye coordination to catch the ball and his running ability is second to none on this team. Also, get rid of the 3-4 set up on defense. WE CANNOT STOP THE RUN already ya think??? Finally, play the best, healthy, academically eligible players we have available because sitting them on the bench is not accomplishing what we have set out to do. The fans/donors deserve better!!! GO GSU PANTHERS!!!

Houston will win big, that we know. All I want to see is Drew at QB and The Donald get 20+ carries on Saturday and I’ll be happy!

I’m going to the game and looking forward to the experience. Went to Tuscaloosa last year and had a great time. Glad CBC is taking responsibility. Really need to focus on having no more injuries since we need to win at least one of the Murry, USA or SC State games and win out to have a winning season. All three of the games will be tough especially if we are not fully staffed and very focused. On the bright side if things go our way we could still go 8-3 and get in the playoffs.

Positive things are we know what is wrong with Panthers, and the question is whether or not we can fix to get another winning season. 1-2 now, still time left to get on the feet, but still in the practice season, time to weed out some before 2012.
For us the supporters, Win will make us smile.
Make us smile a lot, guys.

Glad to see him putting more of the responsibility on the coaches this week, and that the QB situation may finally be changing.

Let’s hope for a turn around against Houston and some positives to build on after the game.

BTW, I thought as FCS Independents, we were only eligible for the playoffs with 1 FCS loss.

GSUtimes2,

Per the NCAA rules, we aren’t eligible for the playoffs until next season- since our first 2 years we are ineligible.

@GSUFan, that’s what I was under the impression of until someone else mentioned FCS Independents are eligible if they only lose 1 FCS game. Either way, I don’t think we are getting in this year…

Thanks for the intel, thought it was a long shot anyway. Just heard Curry saying we were eligible earlier in the year but didn’t know the details.

News flash…ODU shredded us in our house and we just lost to Jacksonville State. We don’t need to be worrying about playoffs. (Curry did say either last week or the week before that we’re eligible.) We need to be getting our house in order and focusing on having a winning season and beating someone that we’re not supposed to beat. At least we can say, other than the Lambuth incident, we’ve beaten everyone we should have so far. Sometimes even experienced teams cannot say that.

Guys please back away from the ledge and take a look at the SB Nation website. Ga State has already received 13 verbal commitments for the 2012 season. It is unbelievable how we are about to reload. Man I love Panther Football. Recruits are dying to play for Curry…the future is looking incredible. Time to step-up and purchase the season tickets.

I’m excited about the recruits, but, maybe I’m being naive. I’m seeing other schools sign athletes with higher ratings on rivals.com. When are we going to start seeing those recruits? Granted, I think it is obvious that Trent Thompson is better than a 2-star rating, but some of these recruits don’t have offers from any other schools. Does that concern anyone else?

Another thing, I think we’ve done a better job than other schools (ODU comes to mind) at recruiting FBS transfers. I hope that continues. Are there any rumblings of some big named FBS transfers to GSU?

How about KH4 to run back kick-offs against Houston this Saturday. DM5 is going to need all the rest possible keeping up with the arial show of Case Keenum! Also, better play Little!!!

Same issues as we had last year at QB- our best one is sitting on the bench. Star last year, Drew this year.

I agree with GSUtimes2 I saw Star play in 2 games. He is an interception waiting to happen, but riddle me this??? If Star is such a good talent who is he playing for now?

I agree with No More. I can’t bear to watch another game with Schlecter at QB knowing what I saw last year was much a better QB performance. In Curry’s press conference he said the QB situation wouldn’t be the same as the Jack State game. Not sure if that means Little’s punting career is over or if we will see # 11 taking snaps in the 1st through the 4th quarters.

GSUtimes2 agreed. You never know how a new high school recruit will fare in the college environment. Good point about the transfers. I hope we pick up as many transfers as possible.
