Schlechter named player of the week

Georgia State quarterback Bo Schlechter was named FCS Independent Player of the Week by College Sports Madness after leading the Panthers to a 41-7 win over Clark Atlanta on Friday at the Georgia Dome.

Schlechter completed 13 of 18 passes for 196 yards and three touchdowns in his first start as a quarterback. He had scoring passes of 30 and 48 yards to Albert Wilson and a 12-yard touchdown to Jordan Giles.

The Panthers also showed some option, with Schlechter rushing nine times for 27 yards.

Georgia State (1-0) will host Old Dominion at noon Saturday at the Georgia Dome.

Schlechter wasn’t the only Georgia State player honored.

True freshman Christian Benvenuto was named placekicker performer of the week by the College Football Performance Awards. He hit field goals of 44 and 45 yards against Clark Atlanta.

On his first collegiate field goal try, Benvenuto booted a 44-yard field goal on GSU’s first possession. He added a 45-yard field goal and was a perfect 4-for-4 on extra points.

Really? Do you call Clark a game or was this a scrimmage?

I was glad to see Bo do well. I hope that he continues to do well. I was never impressed with Little, so anyone who can keep him off the field or–God forbid–motivated is a welcome change.

@Ben B
Technically they’re all scrimmages. There is no post season regardless of our record this season.

@itsmeagain According to CBC on this call in show today, we are eligible for the playoffs this year.

Great starts by both Bo and Christian. Now let’s finish the drill and avenge that sloppy loss against ODU. Don’t count on being -4 in the turnover department this week. The Dome is where we call home! ODU and its rabid fans will find out soon enough!

@jtaylor27 – I hope you’re wrong about Drew being off the field. IMHO, Drew is by far the best QB on our roster and I can’t wait to see his improvements from year one to year two.

Good luck to Bo as if he’s still playing then that means we are winning!

Schlechter might be the best all around athlete on the team. He played great at WR last season, and is an excellent punter. I had my doubts about him starting at QB, but he proved those doubts wrong last weekend. I’m interested in seeing what develops at the QB position this season…all the sudden we have a ton of depth there. No matter who starts at QB, we’ll need the whole team’s best effort in order to beat ODU this Saturday!

@itsmeagain Not really. We would have to win 7 out of the 8 games we play vs. FCS opponents this season. Are we eligible? Yes. Do I expect us to be in the Playoffs this year? No.

Great win. I was apprehensive at the start, but Bo was great and got us a good win.

I noticed our teams need little more work, they are slow.
Old Dominion plays a lot more faster than Clark Atlanta.

Hope GSU Panthers gear up in speed, and get us another [W.]

Good job on the opening, GSU Panthers.

Hoped to see more of the stands full similar to the game against Shorter, but it was great to see at least one Georgia team win in the Dome this weekend. Good job Curry your an inspiration. Mark Richt’s wife is graduating from UGA nursing school this semester….word on the street is that he wants to leave Georgia and do missionary work with his wife.

Congrats to Bo-he really performed on Friday (minus a time or two where I saw he got a little too upset on the field about a mistake he made) and he definitely deserved that honor. However, IMO even though both Bo and Drew have earned that spot, I believe Drew will do better than Bo against ODU. We need to win that game and Bo starting at QB is not the way to go. CAU was nothing compared to ODU. Getting sloppy in the 4th quarter is not the way to go either. Either way, we as the fans, need to show up for our guys and give them our support! Let’s go PANTHERS!

Appreciate positive comments, SCHLECHTER, showed great leadership in the huddle and as well as great coach ability. Don’t sell your team short they are new and have continued to grow upward and onward since their inception. Don ‘t forget there r 11 men and all are needed to make a successful team. GO PANTHERS
