CAA announces new hoops format

Georgia State will have home and away conference games in men’s basketball for the next three seasons against Delaware, Wilmington, Northeastern, Virginia Commonwealth and William and Mary in the new basketball schedule format announced by the Colonial Athletic Association on Tuesday.

The partners in women’s basketball are Hofstra, UNCW, Northeastern, Old Dominion and VCU.

The format includes 18 conference games and is similar to the recently completed six-year schedule that was adopted before the 2005-06 season. Each team was assigned five permanent partners that they play home and away during each season. The remaining six conference games include two opponents at home, two opponents away and two opponents home and away.

The schedule, with dates, will be released in early September.

Each school submitted a list of five preferred permanent partners in rank order to the conference, with only the top choice guaranteed. Each school received a minimum of three of its five preferred permanent partner choices in the final schedule, according to the conference. Georgia State’s top choice was Wilmington, because of geographic proximity.

The home-and-away opponents for the 2011-12 men’s season are Drexel and James Madison.

The Panthers will play Old Dominion and Towson at home, and George Mason and Hofstra on the road.

Thanks Doug! I would certainly like to know if there was any discussion at all about possibly going to a divisional format. I get the impression that this is a no-go because the VA teams don’t want to be split, but now that we’ve been in the league for 5 years, I was wondering if the mood has changed at all?

Not sure i want divisional format as it could entail us being in the northern part (so dumb)

@itsmeagain…I should have clarified….I meant traditional North-South divisions.

Definitely, would not want us to be in the North division of anything in the CAA. And if that were the case, then I would rather the CAA use this system that a system in which the GSU is in the North division.
