Georgia State names captains and award winners

Georgia State announced its spring football award winners today. But there’s a notable catch. For the first time in its short history, the team has named permanent captains. They are Arthur Williams, Christo Bilukidi and Akeen Felder. In the past, the team just named captains for the games.

Coach Bill Curry said he tabbed the trio because “all those guys are really outstanding leaders.”

Bilukidi, who will be a senior and is a defensive tackle, is the team’s defensive captain.

Felder, who will be a redshirt junior, is the special teams captain.

Williams, who will be a senior and tight end, is the offensive captain.

Curry said leadership is the area the team improved most in during the spring. I’ll have more on that later.

Here are the award winners, with a few thoughts from Curry:

Most Improved

Offense: Ramell Davis, OL. He came in as a string bean. Now he’s got a little bit of heft and has improved his technique.

Defense: Allen McKay, OLB. He reached a whole new level.

Hustle Award

Offense: Ben Jacoby, C.

Defense: Akeen Felder, OLB.

Best Performer:

Offense: Jordan Giles, WR. He had the best spring of anyone.

Defense: Mark Hogan, OLB.

Leadership Award:

Offense: Arthur Williams, TE

Defense: Kalan Jenkins, DL

Head Coach’s Award

Offense: Albert Wilson, WR

Defense: Demarius Matthews, CB

Great to hear the players are still improving and that other players have stepped up as the leader. The QB is typically the leader of the team. But, Little is suspended. Hopefully, Hill will fill the void. He really impressed me at the spring game. There’s one thing I never questioned last year and that was his hustle.

Permanent captains, huh? I like it.

Also, Panther fans, we are soon to be sponsored by NIKE. Be on the lookout for that… and if you want adidas gear before it goes away forever, you should get to the bookstore and pick it up (its 50% off)

Welcome to the blog! Panther Nation welcomes you. Great news but not really a suprise about the guys mentioned. Bilukidi is a monster and should have double digit sacks. Bully has slimmed down from 270 to 255 and will crush a few Safeties this Fall. Felder is continuing to get better and has done incredible work in the weight room (he’s gained about 20lbs of quality weight).

This is Our City…Georgia State Football.

Great reporting Doug. How was your meeting w/ Coach Curry today? Did he indicate when the CAU conflict would be resloved? Also, any update on the Lambuth replacement?

It’d be good to replace Lambuth with a non-NAIA team. Or at least an in state team. Where is the guy who’s always on here touting a Valdosta State – GSU match up? Hahaha.

Arthur Williams is a great choice to be offensive captain. I wonder why Brandon Jones did not get the nod on defense, but BIlukidi works just as well.

Welcome Doug! Look forward to your reports/updates. Can’t wait until August and the arrival of our new recruits and the 2011 season. Many Panthers looked great during the Blue-White Spring game. Very impressed with D’Mario Gunn. I think Kelton and Bo will get it done. GO PANTHERS in 2011!!!
