Barnes hired at Cal. school

Former Georgia State basketball coach Rod Barnes was hired Wednesday by California State University-Bakersfield. He takes the job a little more than a month after being fired at Georgia State.

The school recently completed its transition from Division II to Division I, beginning full membership in Division I in the 2010-11 school year as an independent. It had played a Division I schedule for the past four years and fired coach Keith Brown after this past season, when the Roadrunners went 9-19.

Barnes was fired Feb. 27 at Georgia State after four seasons and a 44-79 record. He has been replaced by former IUPUI coach Ron Hunter.

Full spin mode from the Presser today:

Unreal. Really hard to sell a 10 year old award and 8 straight losing seasons. Good luck to Coach Barnes.

GStateBen…I have read your posts on here and on Panther Talk…I respect your opinion but enough is enough…you are two-faced. You seemed to be on board with CRB was hired as GSU’s coach in 2007 and now all you and your croonies seem to do is dog him out. CRB is a great coach. He did NOT have the backing of the current administration behind him. Say what you must about him recruiting and the whole Juco situation…but CRB came into a jacked up situation…Coach Perry left a bad taste in the mouths of a lot of the ATL coaches…CRB had to clean it up. As far as your comment on Panther Talk regarding Ali’s twitter. JAli was and is clearly upset that he wasn’t getting the playing time…he assumed that because he was a Junior he had the automatic start…PLEASE…he better get his mind right for CRH…you have to earn your spot…he’ll be crying the blues this season and dogging CRH out for the same reason. We’ll see how long you’ll be a CRH fan…GSU is NOT an easy job or any easy sell…

@Fed Up I think he was referring to the way which the link he posted was trying to make Barnes look like a good hire. Since they couldn’t say anything good about his performance from the past decade or so, they basically bashed GSUs athletics as a whole. It really was amusing how they were reaching for things to say.

I think GSU is becoming an easier sell, and has a lot of upsides to go with the downsides that are here. It’ll take time, but it’s fairly clear that in the right situation GSU athletics have the potential to catch up to GT and UGA down the road… there’s nothing saying we have to stay smaller forever.

Um…lets go back to 8 losing season out of 12…

Did you really call CRB GREAT?!?!?
What more backing do you need other than your AD and President attending every home game. Seriously? His fallback is lack of institutional support, for 8 years at 2 schools?????

You realize this is a GSU Panther page and blog right? Geez. I dont care!

Two faced? Not quite. I was openly supportive of Coach Barnes. To the point of being called a homer. As gsupanther11 clearly states, I was merely pointing out that a joke of an athletic dept. glosses over the last 4 years of his resume.

He has had 8 straight losing seasons. Enough with the great coach comment. There is zero justification of that title. Yes, he had unique challenges at Georgia State that do not exist now.

In regards to Jihad comments, you are reading into them a bit. Barnes stuck with him as he struggled to shoot and had an awful first half of the season. He had a better second half and I expect big things from as a Sr.

Feel free to email me or PM me on PantherTalk if you care to speak more.

What is the athletic department supposed to do? It’s not a newspaper site. It’s the school’s athletics site! Do you expect them to mention any of the negatives?

I do still think CRB is a good coach. Not a great coach, but good. You don’t win SEC coach of the year by accident. Billy Donovan just won his first one THIS year.

This is a good hire for CSUB because he is probably by far the most experienced candidate they interviewed.

Glad to see him land on his feet somewhere. However, I think this will be an even tougher job than G State.
