Georgia State 2011 schedule

Georgia State’s 2011 schedule will open, as it did in its inaugural season in 2010, on a Thursday night against an in-state opponent at the Georgia Dome. Clark Atlanta will open Georgia State’s second season Sept. 1.

Other highlights include a game a Sept. 10 home game against future Colonial Athletic Association opponent Old Dominion, Sept. 24 game at Houston of Conference USA and an Oct. 22 homecoming game against South Alabama

The schedule:

Sept. 1     Clark Atlanta (4-6 in Division II Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference)

A smart move that could well produce a crowd greater than the 30,327 that watched last year’s opener against Shorter.

Sept. 10   Old Dominion (8-3 as an FCS indepdendent)

Like last year, a good measuring stick for Panthers. ODU, which beat GSU in 2010, will start CAA play in 2011.

Sept. 17   at Jacksonville State (9-3 in Ohio Valley Conference, lost in second round of FCS playoffs)

A rematch of perhaps GSU’s most exciting game of 2010. A good road trip possibility for GSU fans.

Sept. 24   at Houston (5-7 in Conference USA)

GSU’s lone FBS (formerly Division I-A) game of the year. Cougars quarterbacked by Heisman candidate Case Keenum.

Oct. 8      Murray State (6-5 in Ohio Valley Conference)

GSU will be coming off its bye. Murray State fact: Frank Beamer, Houston Nutt, Ralph Friedgen and Ron Zook all coached at Murray State (not at the same time). Murray State is now coached by Chris Hatcher, formerly of Valdosta State and Georgia Southern.

Oct. 15    at South Carolina State (9-3 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, lost in first round of FCS playoffs)

HBCU power has won three conference titles in a row. Could be the strongest FCS team on GSU’s schedule.

Oct. 22    South Alabama (10-0 as an unclassified team; will be FCS independent in 2011)

Panthers looking for payback after getting punished in 2010 loss to Jaguars.

Oct. 29    at Texas-San Antonio (playing first season in FCS)

UTSA led by former Miami coach Larry Coker, plays in Alamodome. At about 1,000 miles, GSU’s longest road trip to date.

Nov. 5     Lambuth (4-6 in NAIA independent, transitioning to Division II)

Lambuth, the only NAIA school on schedule, dealt GSU a humbling loss in 2010.

Nov. 12   at West Alabama (7-4 in Division II Gulf South Conference)

Tigers rookie head coach Will Hall is 30 years old. Yowsers.

Nov. 19   Campbell (3-8 in Pioneer Football League)

The pride of Buies Creek, N.C., comes to Atlanta to complete home-and-home.

2012 Doubleheader in the Dome….GSU vs. GSU and West GA vs. Valdosta State – winners play each other in the Dome in 2013.

Can’t believe Southern will not play GSU. That game would draw 60K, and Southern could use more ATL exposure. GSU is going to get exposure/recruits whether they play Southern or not.

A GA based conference would be even better: GSU, Southern, Valdosta State, West GA, Kennessaw State, Mercer, and bring in Troy, UAB, Coastal Carolina, and Gardner-Webb. Would be an excellent football conference and a heck of a basketball conference.

That conference would be freaking awsome I must say. But to all these people calling for the Southern vs State game,as I for one would love to play you guys, this won’t happen until State is a few more years into football.

Again it is a no win situation for Southern, If you come to Statesboro, which is where the game would be played, and we beat the snot out of you and we would, it because we are Southern we should. If you win we legitimized your 2nd year team, which if your Southern you can’t get beat by a 2nd year school.

We should play a home at home til eternity like GT and UGA. Then when Kennesaw and Mercer come in they can play each other. It would be great for football in this state. Maybe we could beat some of those lower FBS schools for recruits on a regular basis.
