Georgia State is ranked (sort of)

Greetings, all-

Don’t know if I’d call it “big” news, but it should be a fun way for Georgia State fans to begin the week.

At the bottom of the FCS Coaches poll’s’ “Others receiving votes” is this listing: “Georgia State (3).

The Panthers also received one vote in the Sports Network poll, which is made up of school PR staffers, broadcasters and writers. The votes came, of course, by virtue of the Panthers nearly upsetting No. 4 Jacksonville State Saturday in the Georgia Dome.

If you’re wondering, GSU is 47th in the coaches poll and tied for 73rd in the other poll.

Congratulations to GSU and its fans.

Perhaps more salient is who’s ahead of Georgia State. There are five CAA teams among the top 10 teams in the Sports Network poll. There’s going to be rough sledding ahead.
On another note, cornerback Brent McClendon will be out a few weeks with an ankle injury. He sustained the injury in the loss to Jacksonville State. He’s backed up by true freshman Demarius Matthews. Should he start, both corners (Justin Hughes is the other) will be true freshmen.

Can’t put too much stock in polls, but “it’s an honor to be mentioned.” This comes as a surprise and really just makes the loss to JSU force you think “what if we won….” Ken, do you think this means our bigges/most realistic litmus test lies in CAA rival Old Dominion on Oct. 23?

Not bad for the first season of their program. Curry is a great coach to get the program off and running. Good luck!

The Old Dominion game will be a test, but they are just in their second season and will officially join the CAA next season. It will probably be a better road test than Campbell because ODU put more fans in the seats.
Congrats on your ranking or mention in the rankings. The CAA will be even stronger in 2012 with another ranked team in the league.

Very impressive feat for having played three games in our entire history!

Yeah, this will help in recruiting but not much else. Wins vs. Campbell, Morehead State and Savannah (in which we should be favored in and likely win) would continue the votes until we could possibly get closer to the Top 25.

ODU will be tough game up there and I certainly hope that we continue to take steps forward on offense.

GSUtimes2 – without knowing a great deal about the schools on the schedule – certainly having not seen any of them play besides Alabama – I’d agree that ODU should be the best litmus test. South Alabama may well be a better team, but the Jaguars are aiming to be in FBS in a few years. (Though as CAA fan notes, ODU only started last year. But that makes it a good litmus test in its own way. Lamar, too, which is also starting this year.)

Why do you want to create animosity between the our two programs. You may find it odd that a lot of people in the state went to both GSU’s. I did. As the Panther program grows, you’ll find out the real enemy is just down the road….between the hedges. They’ll do all they can to suck attention their way.

I think the next three games will test the maturity of the team to see how they have grown in relation to the win over Shorter and loss to Lambuth. They played ranked Jax State tough, and almost won. Now, do they continue to live off that close showing and get beat by non-scholarship Campbell, or do they grow from the Jax State game. I’m sure Coach Curry will be doing a lot of preaching about keeping things in perspective this week. FOCUS will be the word of the week.
BTW, ODU quarterback Thomas Demarco is on the Walter Payton Award watch list. For those that don’t know, that is the FCS version of the Heisman Trophy.

I’m already making plans to get to the Old Dominion match-up in late October. That’s a 10 hour drive, so many of us may be flying to Norfolk. That’s the only other big match-up this season that I’m ready hyped for, except for that last game. I heard that last team is pretty good at football.

Polls, particularly in FCS, mean absolutely nothing (THANK GOD! None of the bowl nonsense). That said, it is nice to see GSU get some recognition. If we get ranked this year or next year, that’s a real tribute to Coach Curry and the players who wanted to come here and build a winning program. The real test, of course, comes in conference play. For the time being, though, I’ll take climbing into the rankings if we can.

jtaylor27: It does and does not. There are 10 automatic qualifiers as conference champions, and 10 at-large berths are awarded by a conference committee. I’m quite sure they look some at the two polls in conjunction with other criteria like strength of schedule.

@CAA Fan. Well, since strength of schedule is factored, we should be a #3 seed in the FCS playoffs if we can at least score a touchdown against Alabama. LOL.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but–as I understand it–we are not eligible for the playoffs. Is this correct, or did I just make that up? If so–thanks for the info CAA Fan–could we actually…wait, I need to compose myself…MAKE THE PLAYOFFS if we get some love in the rankings?

jtaylor27: I’m pretty sure GSU is not eligible for playoffs because I think you all are in the probation period. I could be wrong. However, the strength of schedule definitely works against you (Shorter, Lambuth, Sav. State, N.C. Central). So its probably safe to say no playoffs until 2012 if you qualify. The CAA is well-respected so a good showing and ranking in 2012 could produce playoff. It could also be a home game. The criteria for hosting (if you bid) with is granted based on projected gate receipts, as well as record, conference affiliation and strength of schedule.

Ga State needs better promotions to help attendance. I believe they need to go after all the former Falcon fans that were mad at the way Vick was treated and they ditched the Falcons. They believe Vick was shafted and felt his dog fighting businsess wasn’t hurting anyone.

Therefore, I think Ga State needs to have a bring your Pit Bull to the game day and have some Pit Bull fights at halftime. 40k average easy!

If they combine the Big Boi concert with the PitBull fights, we are talking 90k paid admission. Unfortunately about 85k may make it out alive as things get out of control and some blood is shed.

Funny thing is, if Georgia State actually played in a FCS type stadium like nearby Herndon Stadium at Morris Brown, it couldn’t hold the Ga. State crowd for two of the three games and would be almost filled for the 2nd game.

Georgia Southern must be worried if they are going to hound Ga. State on every attendance figure and every loss as if waiting for the program to collapse. Guys, for an FCS team, barely out of the starting blocks, they are doing well so far.

I wonder if Kennesaw State will get this much grief in 2014?

I see we have imposter State gans trying to make us look like we’re “barking” at the Dawgs.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

I think most State fans realize that Southern is our logical rival as long as we’re both FCS.

If the day comes that we go to FBS, I think most State fans would consider Tech (being right up the street) our logical rival.

But that’s getting way ahead of ourselves.

I really do not see how we could ever be true rivals with UGA or Tech (they have each other, after all). Think of USF. They play Florida and FSU sometimes, but neither school considers USF their rival.

I’d doubt Bill Curry has a vote, although I’ll ask. And it doesn’t explain the one vote that they got in the other poll. (i don’t vote, and I don’t think I’d put them that high if I did.)
that said, i agree that it’s not worth getting too excited over. but it’s a first for the program.

by the way, i’m going to the press conference at 1 p.m. if there any questions you’d like asked, post them and i’ll see what i can do.

Ken, ask Coach Curry why the players on the sideline aren’t more vocal when they see a pass developing by the other team. Many of us in the stands try to help out our defense when we see the play unfold, but the sideline players should do this as well to help the defense.

Also, please ask Coach Curry which remaining team, other than the above-average team in Tuscaloosa, will be the Panthers’ next big test, just like Jax State was last Saturday. My guess is Old Dominion for more than one reason, although I believe they lost on Saturday. Thanks, Ken; this blog is a great success.

Wow, it seems as if some of the bickering has finally stopped! Probably as a result of a well played game vs JSU. Good to see this since we’re all college football bretheren in this state of Georgia. To backup CAA Fan, I too was under the impression that we are not eligible for playoffs until 2012, when we join the CAA in football.

Ken – You could ask if after the catch/no-catch TD play in OT, if the FCS should look at bringing in replay as the FBS has done.

Ken Sugiura

Prowler – Here are my attempts at Coach Curry’s answers. first, players probably are yelling, but it’s just that you can’t hear them. further, players on the field are doing plenty of talking with each other. As for the second, I think he’d play it very diplomatically – “we’re just focused on Campbell and if we don’t take them seriously, we already have seen what can happen,” except for that he would say it with far more eloquently than that. if he says one particular team is the biggest test, the coach of every other team on the schedule will be telling his team how georgia state doesn’t respect them or some such coach talk.

GSUGrad – i think it’d be pretty tough. Remember that for the first two games, the games weren’t on television and there were only a few cameras for the video board. while i’ve never been to campbell, i feel pretty comfortable guessing that there won’t be video technology like what the dome has. so, it’d be great to have, but i just don’t think it could be supported across fcs.

went to practice this morning. looks like jamal ransby, Demarius Matthews and Isaiah Howard, all true freshmen, will compete in practice this week to see who starts in place of Brent McClendon.
