Quick takes, Georgia State-Lambuth

1) I think we saw how far Georgia State has to go. The Panthers got handled by a team that is probably better than we all think, and even then is nowhere near the level of competition GSU will see in coming weeks. There are challenges that coach Bill Curry faces in his running game, passing game and on the defensive line.

2) It’s hard to say how much of a barometer the game was, but attendance could be a real battle all season. The crowd was announced at about 12,000, but it didn’t look like that to me. The lower bowl seats 28,000 and it looked like it was a quarter full. Athletic director Cheryl Levick said she was “disappointed” in the student section turnout, which was maybe half full – which would be about 3,700 – and I think I’m being generous.

3) How about the state of Georgia taking it in the shorts today? Georgia, Georgia Tech and Georgia State all fall in winnable games and Georgia Southern is losing at Navy. Hopefully we had a winner on the intramural fields at Emory today.

Lambuth was better than people thought, number 7 nationally in NAIA poll. Look at their record last year. That said, GSU should have won. Where was Star Jackson???? As for the crowd, it was probably around 6000 to 7000 realistically. Lots of teams on TV with local interest, and who is Lambuth. We need to average 10,000 per game and students need to show up. Lots of season ticket holders there today, just now walk ups. Be patient, we have a long way to go before the CAA schedule in 2012.

We know who the real GSU is and that is 6 time national champions Ga Southern. Ga Southern gives Navy all they could handle today losing a tight game 13-7.

So GStU lost to Lambuth today HUH? What is a Lambuth? The real GSoU lost to Navy but just barely 13-7. Everyone knows what a “Navy” is. When you play somebody and do something GA State you can use the GSU symbol. Til then, keep quiet!

to answer your question, GSU 78, I think Bill Curry just isn’t ready to put Jackson in. Remember, as far as knowledge of the offense goes, he’s basically a true freshman. (albeit a true freshman who was at Alabama for two years.)

What’s more embarrassing: the fact that Georgia Southern LOST like everyone else, or that there was NO MENTION OF IT in the AJC?

Headline: “Georgia schools go 0-for-3: Georgia Tech was upset by Kansas, Georgia fell to South Carolina and Georgia State lost to Lambuth Saturday.”

Headline: “0-3: Tech, UGA, GSU lose: Jayhawks hold off Jackets for upset; Bulldogs sacked by S.C.; Panthers suffer first-ever defeat.”

Look, if we want to get into a tradition debate with Southern, GSU will lose…but who give a crap?!?!?! Southern has been playing football for 25 years, and have had some excellent coaches come through. Of course, none of them have hung around except for Erk. That said, Southern isn’t the team it used to be, although I hear they are on the up-swing. As for future upside, I don’t think Southern can come close to GSU. State is, firstly, TWO GAMES INTO ITS FIRST SEASON…people seem to be forgetting this…and, secondly, in Atlanta. I am saying this to be a jerk, but it’s just a fact: Atlanta is better than Statesboro when it comes to the “Why do I care factor.” More media, more people, and more opportunities to be important. For may part, I actually think GSU’s long term future is in something like C-USA in FBS. We have 31,000 students this year, so once the program has a few years to gain it’s footing I’m guessing we move to where the money is. Something similar to USF. Whoa! I didn’t realize I had so much to say.

It’s really hard to build tradition over night. Add Greek recruitment which took 400-600 soriority girls away from the Dome and many alums that were assisting with that (including my lovely wife who was asking for updates every 10 minutes) we had the attendance that I was actually expecting. If we can hover in the 15K-18K for a first year I count a tremendous success.

The first game as CBC said was an “illusion.” We aren’t as good as we were on Thursday night and have plenty of work to do. Have a good night Panther Nation! We’ll be back at practice on Monday.

Certainly a disappointment but from what I heard about the practices following the shorter game it could be the kick up the rear the players needed to bring them back down to earth. I am sorely disappointed at the student turnout, I know that there were Greek activities going on but the students primarily have to care. If the students don’t care why should anyone else? That being said it was the second game and I think anybody expecting State to pull off endless wins is joking themselves. This is the time we need to learn how to be a team and is the Reason that we aren’t going straight into the CAA. I am still going to the other games and i will still be putting all my weight behind the panthers regardless of if they lose the rest of the games in the season.

And thumbody; we use the GSU symbol because it’s our symbol. From what I’ve seen of you guys you use the initials GS in yours. I don’t think you have anything to be proud of saying you lost a game when we lost a game because you have those 6 championships and tons of years of football behind you. We have a game. And we will get beyond you, it’s just a matter of time.

Yall are being wayyyy to gracious to Ga State… They lost to a NAIA team… There is no way a team in North Georgia with twice as many scholarships that have been practicing for a year should ever lose to a NAIA team. Not to mention with Curry as coach. Im sure i am in the minority but that is not acceptable. And its funny how everyone is surprised that only 7,000 people showed up to watch two bad teams play with all the great games going on today.

Congratulations to Valdosta State for holding up the state’s honor. At least there’s no question who the real VSU is. (Right?)
GStateBen, thanks for your balance. I think we learned a lot more about Georgia State than we did last Thursday. That said, 400-600 sorority girls wouldn’t have made that much of a difference. 11,000 to 2,800 is a pretty significant drop. Next Saturday will confirm one way or the other, but that’s got to concern the administration a bit. I’m not saying students have to go to games, but I would have thought if there’s that much excitement on campus, then they’d come whether it was Lambuth or Jax State or anybody.

I am told we should be patient. But I feel embarrassed more for the attendance than the score. 9000 less students in a week? Come on now! Alumni and fans held up their end. And I know the argument about 600 sorority girls, but we have 31,400 students. We have a lot of work to do in all facets. A LOT.

I think the Panthers were just looking ahead to their Nov. 18 date at …. Alabama. Georgia State had five first downs today against an NAIA team. Thank goodness by the time the Tide game rolls around, State will have had almost a full year of play under their belts. I don’t think they’re as bad as they showed today – I just think they didn’t play particularly well and Lambuth isn’t a first-year squad.

I know there were 20,200 fans in attendance at Ga Southern’s first game this year. I guarantee you it won’t be a 75% drop in attendance like Ga State as we averaged about 18k even during down years recently. If Ga State keeps up this decline they will have a lot more to worry about than how many sorrority gals could make the game. LOL!

AJC, you did your best to pump up this Ga State bubble, but it will soon be just like it’s basketball program that has about 100 in attendance, half of which are concession workers. Please go ahead and remove the link from your website to avoid anymore journalistic embarrasment for pumping this chump.

This whole AJC pumping the GA State program is getting right up there with the NY Times guy that was making up fictitious stories and the Dan Rather typewritergate fiasco. I think the AJC needs to come out with a front page apology to the people of Ga saying they were duped by an 80 year old washup coach that thought he could pull off what Erk Russell did.

We are well aware that GSU-ATL was a university before GSU-statesboro. We are both GSU, much like USC, FSU, IU, UT, and other letter combinations are shared by multiple schools. If we are really honest about what the universities offer their students, the only area that GSUATL can claim is stronger is the school of business. But we will leave the academic conversations to another blog. We both know that smart students typically go to Emory if they want to be snooty about where they graduate.

Athletically, Georgia Southern has a tradition that is 25 years stronger in football. With a student body of 20,000, GSU – Statesboro has more than enough students graduating per year now to put a football team in 1A. Georgia State will have the funds potentially to play in 1A as well, but the tradition that will make them Georgia’s MTSU(no fans + no recruits = a lot of fired coaches), and will delay them getting there.

20 year prediction:
C – USA will dissolve because it’s not profitable to travel so far west, creating more local rivalries. GSU adds onto their football stadium the final 2 phases increasing seating to 50k (google the blue print for the final look of Paulson Stadium). GSU(Statesboro), App St, FAU, Troy, ECU, SoMiss, UCF, Marshall, Memphis, UAB, MTSU, and FIU create a new conference that will rival the WAC and the MWC.

GSU(Atlanta) hopefully gets a bid to actually play football in the CAA. If they have good boosters(which hasn’t been evident with your athletic program prior to 2010), they raise enough money to hopefully be a member of the Big East after creating a new basketball home and creating alumni who care about their program. It’s the one thing the Big East is missing: a school in a major city in Georgia(so USF doesn’t leave) to be really good at basketball and help feed wins to Pitt, USF, and WVA on the football field.

BR

September 12th, 2010

If the AJC was smart they would cover both programs due to a heavy concentration of GSU(both schools) alums in both towns. Metro-ATL stores would also sell the goods of the GSUs which have student bodies larger than most of the SEC, ACC, and Conference USA schools. If both programs make money/become competitive on a national level Georgians profit which puts more money in the pockets of the AJC in a trickle down sort of way. If Fox News can win elections, the AJC should start getting Georgians to support their alma maters instead of being fans of schools they didn’t attend(UGA, Ga Tech) on a national level.

For all those who are taking shots at Lambuth and the NAIA, I seem to recall for many years Ga Southern competed in the NAIA. I played in NAIA at that time and they play outstanding football. I also played in the midwest and it appears the midwest had their way with the mighty southeast.

@jml30 … you might be ‘misremembering’. We played some NAIA schools along the way of bringing football back to the ‘Boro, but we weren’t in that division.

Georgia Southern competed in the NAIA, but never in football. Georgia Southern was in NAIA in the 60’s, winning the NAIA World Series in baseball in 1961 .. but on the gridiron, we’ve always been a NCAA participant. We joined the TAAC (now Atlantic Sun) in 1980, and have been Division I since, restarting football in 1982.

I’ll start today out by cutting you guys a break and helping out a little.

Just as a helpful tip, you may want to have your athletic dept do some breakeven analysis on the dome lease. I would imagine if things start getting below 8,000 either Ga State will seriously be in the hole or the Dome will rather use their facility for things such as motorcross, monster truck events. knive shows, buckorama’s, Star Trek conventions, home and car audio shows, etc etc etc that bring in bigger crowds. I am sure that the businesses and the tax collecters would appreciate the revenue of 30k vs 5k as well. Also, in these tought time I hate for the students sending their tuition directly to the Ga Dome to pay for empty seats.

I think Grady’s field is available and the businesses around there could use some help

It’s funny to see the same 5-8 Georgia State apologists posting on different message boards like they have for the last few years – now they just have a forum on the AJC to make excuses. “Oh, we didn’t have 400 sorority girls there! If they were there, we would have had 13,000 people there (announced)!”

“Oh, don’t be so obnoxious when talking about our program. We were on the cover of ESPN the Magazine!”

“We were undefeated at football for almost 100 years, we were due for a loss!”

“We have a guy that was run off from big programs as our coach!”

“Our games are on an AM station so everyone can hear us!”

“Don’t make fun of our mascot that looks like a retarded Florida Panther!”

Glad to see the AJC wake up and cover some real football and include a recap of the GSU – Navy game on the front page of the sports section.

http://www.ajc.com/sports/navy-hangs-on-to-611668.html

GSU gave Navy all they wanted to the end coming up a little short at 13-7. GSU held Navy to the fewest rushing yards since 2002. Let’s not forget Navy has been to 7 consecutive bowls and ended last year with 10 wins which included a 35-13 shellacking of Big 12 member Missouri in the bowl game.

I certainly enjoy those folks in Statesboro that lost to a team that lost to a team that doesn’t award athletic scholarships. Congratulations on your close loss! Do you guys have banners for that to? Just checking. Let me know when you are relevant again in the division you play.

With that out of the way, we will learn. This is Game 2 of our program. Georgia Southern fans mock because they are scared. Check how many central and south Georgia players we have on our roster. We’ve had 2 recruiting cycles folks. It’s going to take time.

I never said the Greeks were the be all but girls bring guys. Guys come on back. There will be more fans for Jacksonville State. If you a Panther, come and support your team. If you’re not and want to mock, that’s fine. 180,000 alums nationwide don’t stay quiet forever. The Panthers just awoke. The days will be filled with ups and downs but we have a coaching staff that many on our competitive level would pay all the money to acquire. We will be just fine and I’m confident in CBC and his staff.
