GSU picks up former Kentucky defensive end

Former Kentucky defensive lineman Nermin Delic has signed a letter of intent with Georgia State. He said he will enroll for the summer semester.

Delic, from Tunnel Hill where he was a standout at Northwest Whitfield, said Georgia State was the only school he visited.

The 6-4, 265-pound Delic was attracted by coach Bill Curry, the bond he made with Anthony Midget and the defensive staff, the move to the FBS-level Sun Belt Conference and the fact that two of his former teammates, Donald Russell and Alex Smith, are on the team. He said he spoke to Smith before he made his decision, and that Russell showed him around the campus during his visit.

“I know Georgia State is pretty young football wise,” he said. “I ‘d like to become part of that, building up that program.”

Delic, whose family moved from Bosnia to the U.S. when he was 6 years old, was rated by ESPN as one of the better tight ends in the country, He originally committed to Maryland, but signed with Kentucky because it …

How VCU’s decision affects GSU and the CAA

Colonial Athletic Association commissioner Tom Yeager held a teleconference to discuss today’s news that Virginia Commonwealth is leaving for the Atlantic 10, effective immediately. Of course, Georgia State announced last month that is leaving the CAA for the Sun Belt, effective 2013-14.

Here’s a few of the salient points that I assume are of the most interest to you, the Georgia State fan:

1. He said there are still enough teams to host an 18-game conference schedule in men’s basketball. How that schedule will be put together will be discussed at the conference meetings, which be held June 2-7 in Hilton Head.

2. Other sports will likely fall short of having enough teams to complete a schedule.

3. GSU President Dr. Mark Becker has asked for the bylaw that excludes teams that are leaving from participating in conference tournaments to be reviewed. It will be reviewed at the president’s meeting, which be June 12. Yeager said he is fine with whatever the presidents decide, which …

More from Jake Muasau on earning an NFL contract

Former Georgia State linebacker Jake Muasau was invited to work out for the New York Giants and earned a contract that will give him a chance to make either the 53-man roster, or eight-man practice squad.

Muasau took some time to answer a few questions about his experience.

Oh, and look for a story in Sunday’s paper that will (hopefully) tell you where Muasau’s courage comes from.

Q: You and [Raiders draftee] Christo Bilukidi are trailblazers for Georgia State’s team as the first two players to make it to an NFL camp. Does that make you proud?

A: I’m very proud. During rookie camp, talking to rookies and veterans, meeting a lot of them, there are guys from the big schools all over the country, Virginia Tech, LSU, etc, and they see my sweats with Georgia State on them.

They would say, “Where’s that?”

I would say, “It’s a I-AA program in Atlanta.”

They would say, “They’re like Georgia Tech?”

I would say, “No, Georgia State.”

Talking with Christo last night we had already made …

Hunter lands another big man; Muasau talks about the Giants

Georgia State men’s basketball coach Ron Hunter continues to load up on big men, adding 6-foot, 7-inch Markus Crider to his signing class.

Crider, who played small forward at Bridgton Academy in Bridgton, Maine, is the fifth player who is at least 6-7 in this signing class and will give Hunter more depth and choices in his push-the-pace style.

Crider is originally from Dayton, Ohio, Hunter’s hometown. Crider averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds at Bridgton. He will have three years of eligibility at GSU. He originally committed to Providence, but changed his mind after a coaching change.

Here are Georgia State’s signees:

G Cameron Solomon 6-4, 175 Hampton, Ga. Brevard CC/Lovejoy HS

G R.J. Hunter 6-6, 175 Indianapolis, Ind. Pike HS

Muasau expected to sign with New York Giants

Former Georgia State linebacker Jake Muasau has signed a contract with the New York Giants.

The Giants declined to comment. The contract means Muasau will have an opportunity to earn a spot on the 53-man roster or eight-man practice squad.

Panthertalk.com reported the deal late Saturday.

Muasau was invited to participate in the team’s mini-camp as an undrafted rookie free agent.

Muasau, 6-feet, 1-inch tall and 243 pounds, was one of the top playmakers for coach Bill Curry in the team’s first two seasons.

Muasau had 106 tackles with 16.5 tackles for loss and three interceptions. He also forced four fumbles and recovered four fumbles.

GSU’s Tony Kimbro charged with rape

Georgia State basketball player Tony Kimbro Jr. was arrested and charged with rape on Thursday.

The alleged rape was reported to Georgia State University Police on March 15, according to Deputy Chief of Police Carlton Mullis.

Kimbro and the alleged victim went before a Fulton County judge on Thursday in a show-cause hearing after which the judge signed the arrest warrant. Kimbro’s next court date is May 18.

Kimbro, a 6-foot, 5-inch freshman, averaged 3.3 points and 2.3 rebounds per game last year.

If a Georgia State student has been arrested and charged with a felony, the university code of conduct requires they are placed on in interim suspension. Kimbro has also been indefinitely suspended from the team.

“We have very high standards for our over 350 student-athletes, and we are constantly educating them on their responsibilities as representatives of Georgia State University,” athletic director Cheryl Levick said in a statement.

“Whenever an alleged incident does occur, we …

Bell officially joins GSU; Moody officially dismissed; Levick contract being worked on

Quarterback Ronnie Bell will transfer into Georgia State in June, while Dexter Moody has been dismissed from the team, coach Bill Curry announced on Friday. Bell announced his intention to transfer to Georgia State in February.

Bell won two state championships while leading Sandy Creek to a 29-1 record. He passed for more than 4,400 yards his last two years.

Bell, 6-0, 175 pounds, signed with Ohio, where he redshirted last year. He decided to transfer because the Bobcats were very deep at quarterback and he wanted to play closer to home.

“We are just really pleased to add Ronnie Bell to our team,” Curry said in a statement. “The best thing I can say about him is that he was 29-1 as a starter and won back-to-back state titles in Georgia high school football. And the one game they lost was his first one.”

Bell will enter the quarterback derby currently being led by redshirt freshman Ben McLane. He will also compete against Kelton Hill, who started five games last year, …

Georgia State football schedule stuff….UNC! Florida! Charlotte!

Georgia State has had recent discussions about playing football at North Carolina, and past discussions about playing at Florida.

There are no agreements in place with either school, but discussions are ongoing for what are called “payday” games, in which Georgia State is paid to play. Scheduling is fluid right now because of recent conference expansion. Georgia State is moving to the Sun Belt Conference, which plays football on the FBS level. Because of that move up from the FCS level, Georgia State’s athletic department is reviewing its scheduling philosophy and goals.

The Panthers aren’t the only team experiencing changes that may impact future schedules.

The SEC, home of the Gators, has recently added Missouri and Texas A&M, which may impact its teams’ schedules. The ACC, home of the Tar Heels, has added Pittsburgh and Syracuse.

Georgia State does have contracts with FCS schools Lamar and Tennessee-Chattanooga, which were obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution …

Panthers officially announce USC transfer in hoops

Curtis Washington, a 6-10, 245-pound forward from USC,  has transferred to Georgia State.

Washington redshirted last year after having surgery last August to repair a torn left labrum.

Washington didn’t play much for the Trojans, totaling 11 minutes his freshman year. He averaged 8 points and 4 rebounds as a junior and 8 points and 7.6 assists his senior year in Elizabethtown High School in Kentucky.

“I am very excited to be able to add a player of Curtis’ talent to our squad,” coach Ron Hunter said in a statement. “He adds depth to our low post presence and fits the style of basketball that we like to play. Curtis was an immediate fit when talking with our players. I look forward to working with him as soon as he gets on campus.”

Washington may have to sit out a year, per NCAA rules. However, he has petitioned to play immediately, citing that he redshirted last year and that he is transferring to be closer to home. There are precedents.

Here are Georgia State’s …
