Walton showed amazing talent and depth at the recent Cobb Time Trials and Relays, winning the boys overall, the girls overall and the combined overall events. The Class AAAAAA No. 4 Walton girls beat out No. 3 Kennesaw Mountain and No. 6 Lassiter as well as Class A-AAAAA No. 7 Pope.

The Walton boys managed to take down Class AAAAAA No. 2 Lassiter, No. 10 Johns Creek and A-AAAAA No. 9 Pope. Lassiter did have Zachary Bunner swimming but not Jimmy Yoder, who recently committed to Stanford.

Brookwood took out Norcross in a head to head meet with the girls winning 234-70 and the boys winning 194-106. Rachel Muller stood out for the girls while Nick LaMontagne was one of the many stars for the boys.

At the 20th annual McCallie Invitational, boys Class A-AAAAA No. 3 Westminster finished second behind McCallie, just ahead over AAAAAA No. 5 Milton and Harrison. Lakeside, Centennial and North Cobb also competed in the event. The Westminster girls, ranked No. 1 in Class A-AAAAA won the …

As softball slowly starts to crank up, the polls start to shift as some teams explode out of the gate. Pope started the season on fire, taking three of its first four games and the Silver Division championship of the Longhorn Invitational. The Greyhounds move into the Class AAAAA poll, bumping out Paulding County. In Class AAAA, Marist enters the poll after beating Holy Innocents’ last night 9-5. Rockmart’s 3-0 start pushed the Yellow Jackets into the Class AAA poll. Union County moved up a spot in the Class AA poll thanks to a 4-1 start and Bremen debuts at No. 10 right behind Union County. Finally Georgia Military’s 3-0 start to the year pushed out Pace Academy (1-2) in Class A.

Buford solidified its claim to Class AAA’s No. 1 position with an 8-2 win over Jefferson. Bria Bush tossed a complete game, striking out seven and allowing just one earned run. Freshman sensation Baylee Sexton was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Sophomore Remington Hasty …

Reclassification has created a very interesting new Class AAA in GHSA softball. Suddenly the 2011 Class AA champion Buford Wolves find themselves along side the defending Class AAA champion Oconee County Warriors in the new Class AAA. The five-time AA champion Wolves will begin the 2012 season in the top spot with Oconee County right behind them at No. 2.

Collins Hill has won three straight Class AAAAA softball titles, and the Eagles will begin the 2012 season ranked No. 1 in the new Class AAAAAA. Fellow Gwinnett County power Brookwood will start the season at No. 2 while Archer checks in at No. 5 and Mill Creek checks in at No. 9.

Northgate, Whitewater and Allatoona are all new to Class AAAAA, and those three will sit atop the new poll in the state’s second-largest classification. Houston County checks in at No. 10.

Heritage-Catoosa and Dade County will be the only two teams that did not win a title one year ago and will be the year atop the Class AAAA and …

MACON — The landscape of high school athletics in Georgia took an unprecedented turn on Tuesday when the executive committee of the Georgia High School Association voted overwhelmingly to hold separate public and private school playoffs and championships in all Class A sports, beginning this fall.

The resolution, which was introduced by Charlton County athletic director Jesse Crews, passed by a vote of 37-12, with one abstention. The result will be two, 16-team tournaments – one for public schools and one for private schools — that should keep more than 30 of Georgia’s smaller high schools from leaving the GHSA and forming their own sports league. Representatives from those schools believed there has been a competitive imbalance between public and private schools at the Class A level because of private schools’ ability to accept any student without geographic restriction.
