David Boyd, the boys basketball coach who won six state championships before his forced resignation at Milton last year, is the new head coach at Excel Christian, a private Class A school in Cartersville.

”Blessed to be back in the game,” Boyd posted on his Twitter account on Monday. ”Looking forward to meeting all the players’ parents and the players at Excel Christian Academy at 6:00pm tomorrow [Tuesday].”

Boyd replaces Jon-Michael Dickerson, who took a job as a graduate assistant at Memphis University.

Excel Christian was 26-3 last season and lost to Aquinas in the CClass A private quarterfinals.

Boyd was had coach for state championship teams at Milton in 2010 and 2012. Several of his Milton players have gone on to play for major college programs. They include Evan Nolte (Virginia), Julian Royal (Georgia Tech), Shannon Scott (Ohio State), Dai-Jon Parker (Vanderbilt), Shaquille Johnson (Auburn) and Charles Mann (Georgia).

The road to the state championship game at the Georgia Dome has become a well-traveled one for the Calhoun football team.

In 2012, the Yellow Jackets became the second team in state history to reach five consecutive finals, second only to Buford, which played in its sixth straight title game last year.

The only blemish on Calhoun’s domination has been a 1-4 record in those games. The Yellow Jackets won the Class AA title in 2011 with a 27-24 overtime victory against Buford, which beat Calhoun in the final the three previous seasons. Last year, the Yellow Jackets lost to Jefferson 31-14 in the AA final.

“I told the team the other day that our goal is to win the state championship every year,” Calhoun coach Hal Lamb said. “That’s not going to change. We’ve been fortunate enough to get there the last five years, but we’ve been unfortunate just to have one [championship]. We’re kind of tired of getting there and not winning. To look at it the other way, a lot of …

Our position-by-position look at some of Georgia’s best high school football players resumes with offensive linemen.

That’s perhaps the toughest position to rate because there are few meaningful statistics for linemen. Recruiting rankings don’t properly measure an offensive lineman’s value to his own high school team because college coaches want prospects (6-4, 290) while high school coaches just want somebody who can put a shoulder on somebody long enough to spring a runner or protect a passer.

Here are 10 that would please any high school coach:

- Dennis Edwards, South Gwinnett: First-team all-Gwinnett County in 2012. Edwards was credited with 17 pancakes and 35 knockdowns for a 9-3 team. Georgia State and Western Kentucky have offered, according to 247Sports. Projected as a center in college.

- Jake Edwards, Heard County: A first-team AA all-state pick last season, Edwards has several mid-major offers. Southern Miss and Central Florida lead, according to 247Sports. …

It’s hard to get on with the future without reconciling the past. So it is with Grayson football, which had a memorable 2012 season for some of the wrong reasons.

Nationally ranked and picked to win a second straight state championship, the team underachieved.

The Rams did win Region 8-AAAAAA. They won 10 games. They blew out 10 opponents, including McEachern (Region 5 champion), Central of Miami (nationally ranked) and Brookwood (beat 10-0 Lassiter in the first round). Nobody wanted to play Grayson in the playoffs.

But four turnovers in each of two games – a 22-7 loss to Parkview in September and a 28-10 loss to North Gwinnett in the playoffs – conspired to ruin a season that many assumed would end with at least a state championship, if not a national title.

‘’I don’t think they need to be thrown under the bus,’’ Grayson coach Mickey Conn said. “They won a region championship, which is hard to do in Region 8. Winning a state championship is tough to do. I …

One Sunday in June, the AJC in its print edition will be looking into the issue of paying to play sports in Georgia high schools.

I’ll be writing on the subject and was hoping to get some stories and first-hand experience from the online audience this week.

Do you have a child playing sports in high school? What is the out-of-pocket expense (or dues or fees) that you are asked to pay?

Public schools can’t force student-athletes to pay for play high sports, but they can ask, and they can call these player fees mandatory when they really aren’t.

But no matter how you slice it, high school sports are expensive, and the money-making engine of a sports program – mostly football – can’t always cover the cost of uniforms, equipment, gas for bus travel, officials, etc., of a school’s 15 sports teams.

So how much does it cost to play sports at your school?

Is it too much? Is it fair? Are there some out there that don’t pay anything? Are there any paying $800?

What are …

Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy waited seven years to celebrate another baseball championship. Saturday evening, they had to wait about a little longer than anticipated.

Leading Mt. Paran Christian 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh of Game 2 with the bases empty and two outs, after already defeating the Eagles in Game 1 (5-1), the Chargers thought they had recorded the final out of the series when freshman Cole Ganopulos got fellow ninth grader Taylor Trammell to ground out to first on a full count. ELCA players charged the field and dog piled on top of Ganopulos, as did several enthusiastic students from the bleachers. But the ball had hit Trammell’s foot and was ruled a foul ball by the home plate umpire.

Not to worry. After the fans went back to the stands and all the players collected their gloves and hats, Ganopulos zipped a fastball on the outer edge of the plate for a called strike three and a Class A Private School state title …

Eder Mora scored next 10 minutes in, then Daniel Palacios scored twice to give the Catamounts a 4-0 halftime lead.
Forget about it. Move on.

While 2012 was a special season for Dooly County and the folks in Vienna, a town of just under 4,000 in southwest Georgia, it ended with a sobering 47-7 beat down by Emanuel County Institute at the Georgia Dome in the Class A Public School Final. To make matters worse, the Bobcats’ leader, defensive tackle Montravius Adams, widely considered the top defensive lineman in the country, was negated by a severe ankle injury and a nasty group of ECI offensive linemen. Adams played only a handful of snaps in the second half of the game.

“You can’t continue to look back. We talked about the game when we came back to school in January after the [winter] break,” said Dooly head coach Jimmy Hughes, now …

The 2013 GHSA lacrosse championships will see several past champions looking for even more hardware. The Milton girls have won seven titles over the last eight years while Westminster has won a combined five titles in boys and girls lacrosse. Lambert has claimed the past two Class A-AAAA boys’ titles.

Earlier this season, Lambert’s (15-6) three-year, 43-game winning streak came to a close, but the Longhorns are back in the Class AAAAAA finals. Junior Sean Carruthers scored five goals in Lambert’s first-round victory.

Lambert will face Centennial (18-3), a team that lost just once during the regular season to a Georgia opponent. The Knights have defeated East Coweta, Lassiter and Harrison for a chance at the state title. Nathan Solomon and Brendan Spence have proven to be quite potent on the attack.

No matter the sport, there are carpe diem-type slogans that coaches employ to promote teammate bonding.

For the Stockbridge football team, the current t-shirt material is “hold the rope,” a reference to a piece of motivational writing, author unknown. Coach Kevin Whitley, entering his fifth season leading the Tiger program, said it boils down to mutual trust between teammates.

“It’s if you’re hanging off a cliff, who do you want holding the rope?” Whitley said. “Who will let their hands bleed and burn and not let go?”

With that as a team theme, the Tigers set about replacing quarterback Trent Earl when they started spring practice Monday, as well as most of their receiving corps and two spots on the offensive line. Those are the major question marks, but Whitley seems to like the direction of the program – the Tigers had the best season in school history in 2012 and appeared in the state playoffs for the third straight year.

These 10 were chosen based on what they bring to their high school teams. These are not recruiting rankings. In fact, four of the 10 are not being recruited as quarterbacks.

Who are the best quarterbacks that we left out?

- Brooks Barden, Cartersville: Barden led Cartersville to a 13-1 finish (best since the 1999 state championship team) while passing for 2,872 yards (189 of 304) and 39 touchdowns with only five interceptions. Despite good size (6-3, 200) and being a coach’s son, Barden is not yet considered a blue-chip prospect.

- Adam Choice, Thomas County Central: Choice is rated as the No. 1 running back recruit in Georgia by Rivals.com, but he’s been one of the state’s better high school quarterbacks for the past two seasons. In 2012, he rushed for 1,656 yards and scored 23 touchdowns in 12 games. …

The ingredient for most football teams is to build around is the quarterback. Brooks County has a good one and that’s one of the reasons why the Trojans are expected to again make a lot of noise in Class AA this fall.

Malkom Parrish is the quarterback for the Trojans and last season threw for 3,001 yards and 24 touchdowns in13 games. That ranks him fifth among the state’s all-time single-season passers for yardage. Parrish (5-foot-10, 185 pounds) has a strong arm and is very quick on his feet. He ran for 1,000 yards and 17 touchdowns as a junior. Parrish has started since he was a freshman.

Parrish also starts in the secondary, which is the position he’s expected to play in college. He’s already picked up offers from Georgia and Georgia Tech, with most of the other schools in the region expected to follow. Parrish has been invited to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas, next January.

“He looks good,” said Brooks coach Maurice Freeman. …

The semifinals of the state playoffs commence Tuesday when the girls play for a spot in the finals while the boys play Wednesday. In each of the 12 classifications, there are several interesting notes about the teams and players involved.

Boys

AAAAAA: No. 8 Berkmar is making its first semifinals appearance ever after winning Region 8 and defeating North Cobb 6-0 in the quarterfinals. No. 5 Harrison got here by upending second-ranked Centennial 2-1 after a goal by Nathan Vickroy with six minutes left gave the Hoyas the lead. No. 9 Collins Hill, winner of three of the last four state titles, is back in the semifinals despite losing six key players to the U.S. Development Academy in the offseason.

AAAAA: McIntosh is ranked No. 1 in the nation by NSCAA.com and has scored three or more goals in each game since March 1. Senior goalie Sergio Saleh heads a tight defense that has given up just two goals all season.

AAAA: Three of the four semifinalists …

Valdosta enters its final week of spring practice Monday still searching for a new quarterback and rebuilding an offensive line that lost all five starters.

It’s looking like a three-player race to replace Shelby Wilkes, who passed for more than 1,700 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. No other player had meaningful snaps behind center in 2012, when Valdosta finished 7-4.

Mac Loudermilk, a rising senior who started at H-Back and tight end last year, is trying to win the job ahead of rising juniors Cole Massingill and Craig Berry. The three have different skill sets, says Valdosta coach Rance Gillespie.

‘’Mac is a bigger kid [6-foot-1, 228 pounds] and a really good athlete and does a good job with all the stuff we do in our run game with the added dimension of being a good runner,,’’ Gillespie said. “With Cole, you think that’s what a D-1 quarterback should look like. He’s 6-3, 190 pounds. He looks the part, and he’s a more prototypical drop-back passer …

ALBANY – For most of Saturday’s Girls Track and Field State Championships, the skies looked like they would unleash a downpour at any moment. After Friday’s preliminaries, Westlake looked primed to let loose on the rest of the Class AAAAAA field.

The sky held its fury. Westlake did not.

Led by Auburn-bound senior SheKara Martin and the 400-meter relay team, the South Fulton school blazed its way to 72.50 total points – more than 30 better than second place Mill Creek (41) – and the school’s second state team title in five years (2009). Martin won both the 100- (11.77) and 200-meter (23.94) titles en route to sharing the award for scoring the most points in track events (24.50).

Martin also anchored the 400-meter relay team – which also included Justice Reeves, Jenee Nichols and Ariel Terrell – which, in Friday’s prelims, posted the nation’s fastest time run this season by a girls’ team (45.74). In Saturday’s final, …

For a guy who has won 470 football games and 11 state titles, Lincoln County head coach Larry Campbell always seems to have something to lament about. This spring is no exception.

“We just don’t get to get that much work in during the spring because our kids are playing baseball or golf, and those teams are doing quite well right now,” Campbell said of this week’s spring football workouts. “Then we have kids going on a class trip to Philadelphia and proms, and plays, and academic nights and all that sort of thing that kids need to do in high school. So we’re without some key people we need [in football]. It’s hard when you have a school as small as ours.”

Campbell said he and his staff use spring to get the rising ninth graders up to speed, and so all is not lost. Still, Campbell said next year he will be among the handful of coaches that will ask permission from the Georgia High School Association to play an extra scrimmage …

If the Marist War Eagles thrive in the post-Myles Willis era this fall, a small note of thanks might be due those who adopted new helmet rules for the 2012 season. The rule, which required a player to leave the game for at least one play if his helmet came off during play, resulted in then-backup Chase Martenson getting some meaningful playing time while the War Eagles were rolling up a 12-2 record and an appearance in the Class AAAA state semifinals.

“Myles’ helmet was flying off early in the season and Chase went in there against Clarke Central and had a big bootleg pass for a big third-down conversion,” Marist coach Alan Chadwick said. “Against Lovett he did the same thing, went in and converted a huge third-down opportunity for us. He’s been under the pressure, plus he’s gone against our defense the last two years in practice. He’s worked really hard.”

So the veteran coach, owner of 311 career victories in 28 years, seems unworried about replacing the team’s most …

There are more major league prospects in Georgia’s high school outfields than in any other state.

Clint Frazier of Loganville leads a group of four high school senior outfielders ranked among the top 10 outfield prospects for the June Major League Draft, according to MaxPreps.

Frazier is ranked the No. 1 outfield prospect in the country. Austin Meadows of Grayson is No. 2. Josh Hart of Parkview is No. 3. Riverwood’s Terry McClure is No. 8.

The first three are projected as first-round picks. Frazier and Meadows are considered locks.

‘’Georgia is loaded with quality outfielders, and Hart could be the third to go in the first round,’’ writes Kevin Askeland.

They would join a growing list of Georgia outfielders taken in the first round in recent years.

In 2012, Byron Buxton of Appling County went No. 2 overall to the Twins.

In 2011, Dwight Smith of McIntosh (Blue Jays) and Larry Greene of Berrien (Phillies) went in the first round of the supplemental draft.

Football schedules during odd years (ie, 2013) generally feature the same opponents as the previous season because they are generally played under two-year contracts, but there are several good exceptions.

Here are the 10 best ‘’new’’ games on the 2013 schedule:

1. Booker T. Washington (Fla.) at Norcross: Norcross returns 16 starters – including three blue-chip recruits – from a team that went 15-0 and won Class AAAAAA last season. That’s the kind of glitz that attracts national TV audiences, especially when matched against Florida’s reigning Class 4A champion. The game is set for Aug. 24. Each team has three prospects who are rated four stars by Rivals.com. They are DE Loenzo Carter (rated No. 1 at his position nationally), WR Myles Autry and LB Kevin Mouhon for Norcross and QB Treon Harris, DE Chad Thomas and DB Nigel Patten for BTW, which was 13-1 last season.
Last weekend the boys braved stiff winds, unseasonably cold temperatures and a day-long downpour at the finals of the State Track and Field Finals in Jefferson. This weekend the girls look to have much better conditions in Albany as they vie for state supremacy.

Here’s a quick primer:

AAAAAA

The skinny: Westlake looks like the favorite to win its second team title in five years (2009). The Lions will send a state-best 15 competitors to Albany, along with four relay teams. Sprinter SheKara Martin could win the 100 and 200 meters.

Also in the mix: Alpharetta, Brookwood, Luella, McEachern, Mill Creek, Parkview, Peachtree Ridge, Roswell.

Other athletes to watch: Casidy Callahan, Norcross (Discus, Shot put); Storm Phillips, Valdosta (Long jump); Allie Buchalski, Johns Creek (1,600 and 3,200 meters).

AAAAA

The skinny: Kell superstar Kendall Williams will try to close out her brilliant career by leading the Longhorns to their first team …

It seems like, every week, there’s another set of playoffs and state championships starting up, and we love seeing some champions crowned. The only thing we ever won in high school was seventh place in an eight-person chess tournament. It’s sad, we know.

So we live vicariously through the guys and girls competing now, and one of the sports that’s really caught our eye in recent years is lacrosse.

The playoffs kicked off Tuesday night, and the first round continues through Wednesday.

Sure, those Yankees up north got the ball rolling with this sport, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do it better. Go see your local team play this week. Here are the top 10 reasons why:

With a solid nucleus of players returning from last year’s semifinal team, the Greater Atlanta Christian staff will concentrate on making the moves this spring that may enable the team to take the next step.

“There are some schematic changes we want to implement and see if guys are ready to take the next step and start the process of earning their playing time,” said second-year coach Tim Hardy.

That doesn’t mean the Spartans are going to junk what worked so well for them last year or make some big changes. They’ll likely take a look at some players in different positions to see if there’s a better fit or more depth that can be developed.

“We’re always looking to get better,” Hardy said. “We enjoy throwing stuff out there to see what’s good and what’s not so good.”

Although Hardy’s philosophy is that every job is up for grabs, there’s likely to be little movement among the returning players. The Spartans have six back on offense and nine …

No. 1 McEachern was supposed to breeze through its first-round matchup with unheralded Tift County fairly easily. But the visiting Blue Devils, the No. 4 seed out of Region 1-AAAAAA, won the series opener 4-1 Friday, then, after a two-hour rain delay, took Game 3 tonight in Powder Springs 2-1 to eliminate the Region 4 champions.

Pitcher Zach Bullard accounted for both Tift County wins in hurling all seven innings of each game. Bullard gave up just three hits in the opener and four hits in the clincher.

McEachern was its own worst enemy tonight in making three errors. Both Blue Devils runs came in the fourth inning as a result of Indians’ mistakes.

Tift County’s Will Reinhardt grounded to third and Maxwell Watkins couldn’t handle it allowing Tyler Wall to score the Blue Devils’ first run. Later in the inning Briggs Benson also grounded to third, Watkins’ throw to first was not in time and Ryan Ross sprinted home to score the game-winning …

Kennesaw State’s new football program has snatched up another Georgia high school head coach.

Tim Glanton, who started football at South Paulding in 2006, has been hired by Kennesaw State’s Brian Bohannon.

”I am very excited to be part of the Kennesaw State coaching family,” Glanton said on Twitter. “They have a great adminstration and and great man in Coach Bohannon.”

In April, Bohannon hired Grant Chesnut from Central of Carroll County to be his offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.

Glanton’s record at South Paulding was 29-33. That included record of 6-4 each of the past three seasons. He also coached at East Paulding (2003-05) and Brooks County (1998-2000).

Glanton is expected to be a strong recruiter as he is widely known among Georgia’s head coaches because of recruiting expos that he has run the past several off-seasons.

Matt Lezotte, who turned Class A private school Aquinas into a state power after decades of mediocrity, is taking a job as an assistant coach at Wayne County.

“It was definitely my career” Lezotte told Kevin Faigle of WRDW-TV in Augusta. “Just taking different stages of my career that I wanted to be a student of another system, larger program, and this will give me the opportunity to do that with all the tools.’’

When Lezotte got the head coaching job at Aquinas in 2009, the private school had never won a state playoff game. Aquinas was 9-4 in 2011 and reached the Class A quarterfinals.

Aquinas’ 32-14 upset of Wilcox County in the second round was seen as one catalyst for the public schools’ split with the private schools in the GHSA’s lowest classification.

Aquinas was 8-3 this season. Aquinas had won eight games only two other times in its history (1998, 1972) until Lezotte arrived. Lezotte was 28-16 in four seasons.

The state baseball playoffs begin Friday with 96 best-of-three-games series. Here is a class-by-class look at some of the teams to beat.

AAAAAA: Parkview (20-6) is seeking to become the first school since Evans (1988-90) to win three straight championships in the highest classification. The Panthers have won Region 8 and nine straight games since a Florida showcase tournament over spring break.

AAAAA: Region 8 rivals Loganville (22-4) and Gainesville (22-3) are nationally ranked and perhaps Georgia’s best teams in any class. Loganville won state titles in 2008 and 2012 and has Georgia-signee Clint Frazier (.521, 13 HR), a potential national player of the year. But Loganville has lost twice to Gainesville, whose ace pitcher, junior Michael Gettys, also has signed with Georgia and will play in an All-America game this summer.

AAAA: Crisp County (22-4) has won 14 straight games (nine by shutout) and is 15-0 against AAAA teams. Crisp last won a state title in baseball in 1961. …

This is the measure of a strong program: In what was by most accounts a rebuilding year in 2012, Carrollton went 8-4 and was one play away from being in the state quarterfinals – they were eliminated in one of the state’s best games in 2012, a five-overtime loss to Marist — with a team completely devoid of returning skilled players.

Fast-forward to 2013, and the Trojans’ prospects look bright. With nine starters back from an offense that scored 467 points, the main questions on that side of the ball are who will fill two spots on the offensive line and which quarterback – Will Garrett or Will Hesterlee – will see more time.

There are questions on defense, where the Trojans lost six starters, but the offense has enough talent and experience returning to mitigate any defensive struggles.

Carrollton coach Rayvan Teague, who finished 2012 with 207 career coaching wins, is unconcerned about the two-quarterback system.

Score Atlanta

Class AAAAAA No. 1 Lassiter lost to South Gwinnett 2-1 in a mammoth upset tonight in the first round of the boys soccer state playoffs. The visiting Comets took a 1-0 lead into halftime when Austin Varney scored in the third minute, but Lassiter rallied to tie the game behind a goal by senior forward Trey Luscre in the 38th minute. Senior midfielder Clay Dimick assisted on the goal with a corner kick.

South Gwinnett, however, re-took the lead with two minutes remaining in the contest when Derek Denton connected on a header.

Lassiter finishes its season 16-1 while South Gwinnett (11-4-1) will advance to the second round. The Trojans had not given up a goal in six games coming into the playoffs and had only been scored upon in five matches during the regular season. The lone goal is the fewest scored by Lassiter since a 1-0 win over Pope on Feb. 26.

“The biggest thing we’ve got to do is replace our senior leadership,” said coach Frank Barden, who will be starting his 19th season with the Purple Hurricanes this fall. “That was a strong character class. There’s no question our team’s success last year was all about chemistry.”

That chemistry was reflected in the results. Cartersville went 13-1 before losing to Buford in the Class AA semifinals.

Much of that Region 5-AAA championship team will be returning this fall. The Purple Hurricanes have many offensive weapons back from last year’s team that averaged 42.2 points during the regular season.

The offense begins with quarterback Brooks Barden, a 6-foor-3, 214-pound senior who was a first-team all-state selection last year. Barden threw for …

Admittedly, part of that is because all the pollen has finally washed off our cars. Most of them are so rusty, they could barely handle the extra weight.

But most of the excitement has to do with the Georgia Olympics coming up Thursday, where the boys state track and field champs will be crowned.

Of course, there’s no way to really see this awesome event without making the trek to Jefferson and seeing it for yourself. In fact, if you can run there, do it. It’ll be fitting. But we suppose a car will work too.

What’s that? You’re skeptical. Well, then, read the 10 best reasons you need to go.

10. Great facility in Jefferson

There’s a reason the state meet keeps coming back there again and again and again and again. It’s certainly not because Jefferson, which sits about 20 miles northwest of Athens, is centrally located. It’s because the facility is fantastic, and the …

The state high school soccer playoffs begin Tuesday as the girls Class AAAA, AAAAA and AAAAAA tournaments commence. The boys tournaments will start Wednesday night.

The Class AAAAAA No. 1 Lassiter Trojans are one of the top teams in the nation according to multiple national polls. Under first-year coach Sam Dietrich, the Trojans have rolled up a perfect 16-0-0 record this season with 11 shutouts. Lassiter goalies Justin Shaw, a senior, and Josh Stoll, a sophomore, have allowed just seven goals all season. Three of those came in a narrow 4-3 win over Roswell on March 19. Senior defender Alex Champion and freshman midfielder Munear Abousaud lead the Trojans’ attack.

No. 4 Lambert could face Lassiter in the second round should each advance. Lassiter has been a perennial power in Georgia’s largest classification for years but has broken through for just one state title, which came in 1996. Lambert won the Class AAAAA title last year in one of the …
