Panthers shut out, sweep Mill Creek

Parkview 5, Mill Creek 0: Parkview senior Jessie Foster improved his record to 11-0 with a complete game shutout. Foster struck out six while allowing just three hits. The host Panthers were led at the plate by Edwin Arias, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple. Hunter Thornton got into the act with two hits and an RBI, while Josh Hart has two runs and an RBI. A three-run seventh broke it open for Parkview.

The defending Class AAAAA state champion Panthers advanced to the finals, where they will host arch-rival Brookwood.

Class AAAA Tuesday semifinals roundup

Greenbrier 15, Whitewater 5: The host Wolf Pack crushed 15 hits, five of them doubles, on their way to a five-inning mercy ruled-shortened win.

Christian Hill (7-1) pitched a complete game for Greenbrier, striking out five. At the plate for the Wolf Pack, Knox Marchman was 3-for-3 with three RBIs, Clint Hardy as 3-for-4 with three runs, and Taylor Glover was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Greenbrier scored four in the first, and nine runs in the first three innings.

Loganville 2-2, Johns Creek 1-1: Loganville won two games in the final inning Tuesday to advance to the Class AAAA finals series this weekend.

In Game 2 of the series, an RBI single by Justin Friend staked the visiting Gladiators a 1-0 lead. Daniel Milligan tied things in the bottom half of the inning, and the score remained tied until David Mayo’s sacrifice fly scored Kyle Hall to win it for Loganville in 10 innings. Class AAA Tuesday semifinals roundup

Columbus 7, Troup 1: Senior Pierce Ressmeyer crushed a first-inning home run to help jumpstart a three-run frame for the host Blue Devils. A bit of controversy stirred in the fourth after Dalton Hadley hit a home run, but was called out for missing home plate. Columbus added some insurance in the seventh on a two-run double from junior Tony Dalponte. J.T. Phillips had an RBI for Columbus. The Blue Devils will travel to Ringgold this Saturday seeking a third straight state title.

Ringgold 11, Gainesville 3: After the visiting Tigers put up two runs in the second inning, Gainesville battled back to tie the game in the fourth on a Hunter Anglin homer. The tie was short-lived, as Andy Mocahbee hit a pair of home runs to help Ringgold to an eight-run fourth inning. Austin Parrish tossed a complete game for the Tigers to earn the win. Gainesville finished the season 32-2, with both losses coming to Ringgold in the best-of-three semifinals.

Pierce County closes out Lovett

Pierce County 17, Lovett 7: After each team scored five runs by the top of the third inning, Pierce County seized control of the game when Drew Taylor connected on a three-run home run. After Lovett tried to bounce back, Nate Gay drilled a home run to push the lead to 12-7. The Lions squandered a bases-loaded chance in the fifth, and the Bears took advantage of two bases-loaded situations to pull away against the Lovett bullpen.

Pierce County advanced to the Class AA state finals, where it will host Appling County.

Class A Tuesday semifinals roundup

Charlton County 8, George Walton Academy 4: The host Indians fell behind 2-0 in the first then rallied for two runs each in the second, third and fourth innings. Charlton County added one run each in the next two innings to hold a commanding 8-4 lead. Chris Smith threw 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win. Jacob Baxter had two RBIs and Richard Dasher went 2-for-3 three with an RBI for the Indians. The Bulldogs were led by Evan Alderman, who was 3-for-4.

Savannah Christian 5-6, Providence Christian 4-7: The Stars jumped out to a 3-0 lead at home over Savannah Christian in Game 2, but Erik Davis blasted a two-run home run and Bryce Evans would give the Raiders a 4-3 lead. After Providence Christian tied the game, Davis singled home the game-winning run. In Game 3, Christin Stewart tied a state record with his 69th career homer, giving the Stars an early lead. Savannah Christian would try to rally, but coach Adam Cantrell’s pitching staff closed out …

Esmonde leads Parkview to walk-off win

Parkview 5, Mill Creek 4: In a Class AAAAA semifinals series, Parkview won in walkoff fashion after Jack Esmonde’s infield single scored Michael Craig for the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Josh Hart had tied the game on the previous at-bat after a passed ball.

Esmonde got the win out of the bullpen after throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Matt Olson started the game and went 4 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts. At the plate, Esmonde was 3-for-4, while Olson was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Josh Hart was 2-for-3 with two runs.

A single by Nick Tillman and back-to-back homers by Tyler Boldt and Jesse Thomas put Mill Creek ahead 4-3 in the fifth inning.

Game 2 was postponed and will be played tomorrow at 4 p.m.

Johns Creek 7, Loganville 2: In Game 1 pitcher Matt Gorst threw a complete game, striking out five with two earned runs. Dylan Dore led off the game with a homer for the visiting Gladiators. Game 2 was postponed and will be played Tuesday at 2 p.m.

Columbus 9-1, Troup 0-5: The visiting Blue Devils won Game 1 behind the pitching of starter Kyle Carter, who tossed a complete game. In Game 2, junior outfielder Dalton Hadley homered in the fourth to give Troup a 3-0 lead. Jackson Oliver had an RBI single for the Tigers. Garrett McClurg earned the Game 2 win with a complete game.

Ringgold 4-2, Gainesville 3-12: Corey Kafka tossed a complete game with nine strikeouts for the visiting Tigers in Game 1. David Gonzalez also pitched a complete game, but in a losing effort. Gainesville rebounded in Game 2 as Stephen Mason launched a grand slam to start the onslaught.

Appling County 11-12, Brantley County 1-6: Byron Buxton struck out 11 in five innings of work to get the win in Game 1. In Game 2, Buxton had a three-run triple and closed out the game in relief to clinch the Pirates’ first-ever trip to the state finals.

Lovett 0-7, Pierce County 8-5: Bears pitcher Will Lowman tossed a no-hitter, striking out eight to lead Pierce County to a Game 1 victory. In the second game, Lovett’s Sean Reagan was 2-for-2 with two runs and Robbie Blair’s two RBIs and two runs. Lovett held off a late rally to force a Game 3.

Providence Christian 11, Savannah Christian 5: The Stars took Game 1 behind Austin Loyd’s four runs and Austin Golden’s four RBIs. Luke Henderson picked up the victory. Erik Davis hit a three-run home run for visiting Savannah Christian. Game 2 was postponed and will be played Tuesday at 1 p.m.

Brookwood 12, Harrison 4: The host Broncos advanced to the semifinals with a 12-4 Game 3 win in a Class AAAAA quarterfinal. Brookwood’s balanced attack saw all nine starters have at least one hit. Senior outfielder Cedric Mullins hit a bases-clearing triple in the third inning to give the Broncos a 4-1 lead. Pitcher Bryan Woodard got the win after throwing five innings for Brookwood and giving up four runs on four hits. Jordan Banks finished off the game by pitching two innings of one-hit relief.

Appling County 3, Blessed Trinity 1: Senior first baseman Kyle Miller slammed a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie and host Appling County won Game 3 to advance to the semifinals. Josh Deen pitched six innings and got the win for the Pirates, while Byron Buxton earned the save with one inning of perfect relief.

Lovett 6, Calhoun 5: Lovett scored five runs in the top of the seventh to take a 6-4 lead, then Mitch Stallings, despite allowing a solo home run in the bottom half, picked up the save to give Lovett the series victory. The visiting Lions took a 5-4 lead on a squeeze bunt RBI by Nick Boden, then a sac fly from Jack Stickney (3-for-3) scored one more. RBIs from Sean Reagan and Brooks Schoen (the winning pitcher after working the sixth) helped Lovett pull even at 4-4.

Lacrosse roundup: Westminster rolls

Caroline Heys’ six goals, Eve Knapp’s five and Sara McGahan’s four helped Westminster’s girls defeat visiting Chattahoochee 20-7 Tuesday and reach a chance Saturday to remain the only state champion in three years of Class A-AAAA competition.
The two-time defending champion Wildcats (19-2) led 12-5 at the half en route to their sixth consecutive victory. Aubrey Bausom’s two goals and one assist paced the Cougars (13-7).
Westminster coach Jay Watts credited a tough 10-9 quarterfinal against Holy Innocents’ with preparing his team.
“It feels really great,” he said. “Our offense was really clicking. We were ready for anything.”

Lassiter 14, Alpharetta 4: After falling behind 2-0, the Trojans (16-2) scored four goals in one minute to take a 4-2 advantage they never relinquished.
