Washington County plays pretty good basketball, too

The fact probably got lost in Washington County’s undefeated regular season and run to the state title game in football, but they play pretty good basketball in Sandersville, too. So far the gymnasium has been a House of Pain for opponents this year.

The Washington County girls have been particularly good. The Golden Hawks have won the first nine games of the season, including the Colquitt County Invitational.

The Golden Hawks beat Madison County of Florida, Fitzgerald and Brunswick, which entered the tournament finale with an undefeated record.  Shon Kitchens scored 21 points and Nia Johnson added 13 in the 68-66 win over Brunswick in the final game.

Washington County is led by Kitchens, who averages 18 points, and Daknequa White, who averages 12.1 points. Johnson averages 10.6 to give the Hawks three players in double figures.

Central Carroll girls win Christmas Classic

The Central Carroll girls won the Carroll Country Christmas Classic and stretched its season-opening winning streak to 10 games before finally tasting defeat.

The Lions beat Villa Rica 50-35 in the championship game of the Carrollton tournament. Sherae Bonner was the MVP of the tournament and had 20 points and 16 rebounds in the title game. Brianna Cousins was also named to the all-tournament team.

Central won its opener in the FCA Gold Classic before losing the Class AAAAAA North Gwinnett, the state runner-up a year ago, 59-48 in the second round.

St. Pius sweeps to win

The St. Pius boys and girls won the St. Pius Christmas Classic. The boys beat McGill-Toolen (Ala.) 50-40 in the championship game, with Nick Harris named MVP. The girls overpowered Mother of Mercy of Ohio 69-37, with Asia Durr the MVP. Durr scored 68 points in the two games, 40 of them in a 72-50 first-round win over River Ridge.

Unbeaten Southwest scores important win

The Southwest Macon girls remained undefeated and went into 2014 with an important 70-59 victory over Peach County. The Patriots (8-0) had not been tested; the 11-point win was the closest call of the season for coach Willie Goolsby’s team.

Peach (8-3) lost to Southwest despite 23 points from sophomore  Jordan Davis and 20 points and 14 rebounds from sophomore Alexia Green.

The two teams meet again in Fort Valley on Jan. 7.
