TRIVIA

Norcross coach Keith Maloof and his father, George Maloof, each have been head coaches for state championship teams, Keith for 2012 and 2013 Norcross and George for 1968 St. Pius. Which father-and-son pair was the first to win state titles as head coaches? (Answer Tuesday)

Answer to Friday’s question: Ted Sparks of Southwest Atlanta in 1973 was the first African-American coach to win a state championship in the GHSA. The Georgia Interscholastic Association, the governing body for historically black Georgia high schools during segregation, held its final state finals in 1969. Sparks, who is retired and still living in Atlanta, recently attended the team’s 40th anniversary party.

COACH SPEAK

“Play hard or go home.”

- Pebblebrook coach Tommy Macon

“Do right. … right follows.”

- West Hall coach Tony Lotti

“Win the day.”

- Woodstock coach Brent Budde

GHSF Daily asked coaches during the offseason if they have a favorite quote, saying or motto. We’ll run a different one each day. Coaches are invited to add to our list.

The answer to the trivia is:

Rodney Walker, who won the title with West Rome in 1984 (lost two other title games while coaching at Stephens Co. and Peach Co.) and his son, Chip Walker, who won titles at Sandy Creek in 2009 (AAAA), 2010 (AAA), and 2012 (AAAA).

The Walker’s are great people and I’ve known them for nearly 20 years. Rodney is one of the best coaches in GA history and his son, Chip, is well on his way.

Is this based on a 10 game season ?

That is my question Captain. If it is the whole season, Lovejoy belongs on it.

Lovejoy scored 625 in 2012.

Folks – I have updated this list because the original on had several omissions. There are 47 teams in GHSA history to have scored 600 points or more. This is for the full season.

Thanks to Bobby Hodges of the GHSFHA for generating the list. I’m unsure how I sorted the data in a way that caused the error.

Thanks for the correction Todd. Although you may not think so, I appreciate you and what you do. I know it is not easy. There is a ton of info to keep up with. You do just fine.

Buford, Buford, Buford, Buford & more Buford.. (5 X’s)

The list should be for only teams that have scored 700 +

Oh & their D was top notch too.. Gainesville & Washington – that are on this list for this season – scored 14 & 19, respectively..
