Class AAAAA championship: Creekside 52, Tucker 28

Two teams that appeared as similar in so many ways as Creekside and Tucker heading into Friday’s Class AAAAA championship game played that way for two quarters. Then the third quarter began.

Creekside’s Cameron Jackson returned the second-half kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown, Dexter Knox scored his third and fourth touchdowns of the night and Francisco Alejandre kicked a 33-yard field goal as the Seminoles broke the game open with a 24-point quarter and went on to beat top-ranked Tucker 52-28 at the Georgia Dome.

The victory gave fourth-ranked Creekside (15-0) its first state championship in football. The Seminoles became the first south Fulton team to win a state title since Palmetto in 1983. Creekside opened in 1990 as a merger of Palmetto and Campbell-Fairburn. It also was an emotional ending to a season the Seminoles had dedicated to De’Antre Turman, a starting defensive back who died from injuries suffered during the Seminoles’ preseason scrimmage in August.

Tucker (14-1) fell short of its third title in six years after winning in 2008 and 2011.

Jackson’s kickoff return broke a 14-14 tie, and the Seminoles added to the lead less than two minutes later when Knox scored on a 16-yard run. Creekside had taken possession two plays earlier when Thaj Perry forced a fumble that the Seminoles recovered at the Tucker 32.

After Tucker cut the lead to 28-21 on a 21-yard run by Yaquis Shelly, Creekside put the game away. Alejandre’s field goal and Knox’s 22-yard run made it 38-21 with 4:05 to play in the third quarter.

Creekside did what few teams had been able to do against the Tigers this season – run the ball. Tucker came in allowing just 81.8 yards per game on the ground, but Creekside rushed for 326 yards on 56 carries. That included 166 yards and five touchdowns from Knox and 141 yards from Bricen Terry. The Seminoles’ Felix Harper also was efficient throwing the ball. He was 8-of-14 passing for 209 yards and threw a 77-yard touchdown pass to Jayson Stanley in the fourth quarter.

Tucker, which averaged 232 yards rushing, finished with 158 but had to go away from the run as the Seminoles pulled away. Tucker quarterback Joseph Farrar was 7-of-18 passing for 178 yards, well above his average of 75.9, and threw touchdown passes of 38 and 65 yards to Dominick Sanders. He also led the Tigers in rushing with 74 yards on 15 carries.

Both teams ran the ball well during time-consuming drives on their opening possessions of the game. Tucker took the kickoff and went 73 yards in 11 plays, 10 of which were running plays, and scored on a 1-yard run by Farrar for a 7-0 lead with 7:53 to play in the quarter. Creekside answered with a 15-play drive that covered 80 yards in 5:49, capped by Knox’s 1-yard run to make it 7-7 with 2:04 remaining in the quarter.

The Tigers regained the lead on Farrar’s 38-yard pass to Sanders with 26 seconds to play in the quarter, but Creekside tied it at 14-14 on a 3-yard run by Knox with 1:50 to play in the half.

Tucker – 14-0-14-0 – 28

Creekside – 7-7-24-14 – 52

T – Joseph Farrar 1 run (Eric Weber kick)

C – Dexter Knox 1 run (Francisco Alejandre kick)

T – Dominick Sanders 38 pass from Farrar (Weber kick)

C – Knox 3 run (Alejandre kick)

C – Cameron Jackson 99 kickoff return (Alejandre kick)

C – Knox 16 run (Alejandre kick)

T – Yaquis Shelley 21 run (Weber kick)

C – Alejandre 33 field goal

C – Knox 22 run (Alejandre kick)

T – Sanders 65 pass from Farrar (Weber kick)

C – Jayson Stanley 77 pass from Felix Harper (Alejandre kick)

C – Knox 7 run (Alejandre kick)

Man what a 2nd half that was!!! Great football and great adjustments by Creekside!! I thought we had a chance to pull back in there!! 2 big plays!! Special Teams and Turnovers will do it every time!! @CREEKSIDE-THE-NOLES: Even though the score doesn’t reflect, I believe we had our chances! A few key drops and you guys took us completely out the run!! And fumbles!!! Man that was an excellent 2nd half adjustment!! And I saw the momentum shift with the kick return then a fumble!! Those 14 points were enough!!! But 6A is a completely different animal!! We are 1 of the smallest schools in 6A! Definitely bottom 5! We may need a year to adjust.

proud of those boys especially those seniors I remember when they were fighting to get on the field as freshman. And I’m glad we beat a team who is a regular power and always will be in Tucker it just made it more cementing for CHS as a program to beat a true blue blood. Now im ready to see most of them (hopefully all) get a chance to play on saturdays! And maybe even play against with/against a few of them…??? Time will tell. I’ll let them enjoy this one now.

@ TUC2003, Tucker has a great team, but I think the difference in the game was the fact that those guys from Creekside was on a mission. When I saw everyone of those ball players touching their falling player number coming out on the field. I said to myself that these guys are playing not only with their skills & talent, but on emotions and a purpose driven win…!!! Congrats to both team for making it to the Dome…

TUC2003- YEA YOU MISSED SOME OPPORTUNITIES 1ST HALF. With pass that could have been a touch down and that fumble.I was talking to some people at the game and they were telling me that Tucker has been playing like that all year but was very fortunate to get by a few of those teams.

Ya;ll can play with 6A, but got to cut out so many players going both ways. We burned ya’ll out tonight they were tired. Man when you playing against pounding teams like ours you have to rotate the D-Line and LB’s some.

On another note, some of those Tucker ppl was telling me that yall have good talent on the side line that’s not playing much and they couldn’t understand why the tightend #81 wasn’y used more.

The taste of crow is disgusting and Dexter Knox put some gravy on it.

Congratulations to Creekside and clearly there’s absolutely nothing weak about this team.

I guess the CURSE of JAB is real!!

Though I can’t even blame this butt whipping on JAB pulling for us despite the warnings of the Gainesville fan trying to tell us it was going to be bad karma.

At any rate though Creekside was the better team tonight one thing is quite clear in order to be a Champion you have to beat a Champion. And, with that I leave you with this Creekside:

WE ARE TUCKER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (And, NO CreeksideDad we are not Suckers over here)

@CREEKSIDE-THE-NOLES: I try not to get into the why’s of the game. We just got dominated for 24 mins! Sometimes in life you have to accept the fact that certain things are just meant! And it was obvious that it was just meant for your guys to win! I can’t explain it in X’s and O’s. Destiny plays a part and it was clearly you guys destiny. We looked faster and more athletic in the 1st half and slower and average in the second!! Can’t explain it any better!! That is what I call destiny!

Congrats Creekside, fantastic game. Tucker, congrats also on a great season and run the past few years. A lot of big plays goth ways. Surprised to see so may wide open receivers in the first half. But like good teams do, adjustments were made, especially by Creekside. The offensive line of Ceeekside really stepped up and pretty much manhandled the Tucker front line the second half.

Fun game to,watch. Again. Congrats to the new AAAAA Champion – Creekside Seminoles. Celebrate safely.

That couldn’t be true because we only have one non region game and that spot is already taken by the Florida team, not that Stephenson would back down from competition, because we love playing tough opponents..

We will be ok at Tucker. 14-1 was a great season. We lost our top RB to Stephenson and the top DT in the state to injury and was still able to compete in the championship game but as I said earlier, nothing interferes with destiny and Creekside clearly was destined! Things happened tonight that I have seen happen to Tucker in years.

Buford is moving up to 4A; they wont move up any time soon after this, because that would mean they will have to be in the same region with the other Gwinnett County teams, and then the county will put a holt on students coming to play for Buford around the county, because it would hurt the other programs…

I hate to say I told you so but… every team JAB roots for loses. Anyway, congrats Creekside on a great game. Hold your heads up Tigers! Despite what Creekside supporters are saying, we have nothing to be ashamed of. It was just their time…this time. We have experienced the same feeling…twice. Time to leave 5A for the Lions and Jags to fight over. Undefeated up until now was quite an accomplishment. There is always next year in 6A.

WOW!!!! What a game. Tucker you have a great team. #1, #2, #3, #4, #9, #20, #32, and #81 are all grown men. Great season Tucker I was impressed with your team. My prediction was 42-17. That’s a 25 point deficit. I was wrong about the score but we still won by 24. I tried to tell you before the game and you called me BS. I told you that you would be in it for the first quarter, but midway through the third we were going to bust it open. I knew that you wouldn’t lay down because you have too much heart for that. I knew that you play kids both ways and our MASSIVE OL would take over in the third. I told you about our 1, 2, 3 punch in our RBs. #12, #44, and #4. I told you that our slick lefty soph QB would not fold under pressure and you did put pressure on him. I also told you that #5 would be a game changer and he changed the game with that 99 yard kickoff. Most importantly, I told you about our EXCELLENT Coaching Staff. Did you really think that we would give you easy TDs by kicking it deep? No sir, we made you drive 70 yards. We were the #4 team and put up 55 on the #2 team in Kell and 52 on the #1 team. I told you that we had the #1 offense in the state. We averaged 47 points per game in the playoffs. I told you that DEUCE would have his hands all over this game. The margin of victory was 24. 2 for Deuce’s Creekside number and the 4 for his Ben Hill and Bunche number. Good luck in 6A. Last but not least, I told you that there is a new SHERIFF in 5A and he goes by the name of CREEKSIDE.

WE ATE DEUCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GO NOLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
