Kell Classic expands to 7 games, adds Tucker, Mill Creek, Valdosta

The Corky Kell Classic will expand to seven football games in 2014, with two played at McEachern’s Walter Cantrell Stadium on Friday, Aug. 22, and five in the Georgia Dome on Saturday, Aug. 23.

Tucker and Mill Creek will play in the event for the first time. Tucker could be involved in a game between reigning state champions. Tucker Tucker wins the Class AAAAA title on Friday against Creekside, Tucker would play the AAAAAA champion – Norcross or North Gwinnett  – in the Corky Kell in Saturday’s 8:30 p.m. Georgia Dome game. If Tucker does not win, Tucker will play Norcross at 8:30 and North Gwinnett will play Colquitt County.

Mill Creek will play McEachern at 11:30 a.m.

Valdosta will be back for the first time since 1997 and play Brookwood. Carrollton returns for the first time since 1998 and will play Kell.

In the Friday games at McEachern, Creekview plays North Paulding and Sandy Creek plays Archer. Those schools have never participated in the Kell Classic.

The Kell Classic began with only two games in 1992 and gradually expanded until reaching five games in 2012.

“The expansion of the Corky Kell Classic this year is something that we desired because of the large number of teams that are interested in playing and it makes the Classic a weekend event instead of one day,’’ said Dave Hunter, the event’s executive director. “The games this year are as competitive as any we have had in our 22 years.’’

The seven games will be televised by Comcast Sports South (CSS).

Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic:

Aug. 22 at Walter Cantrell Stadium, McEachern

5:30 p.m. – Creekview vs. North Paulding

8:30 p.m. – Sandy Creek vs. Archer

Aug. 23 at the Georgia Dome

8:45 a.m. – Kell vs. Carrolton

11:30 p.m. – Mill Creek vs. McEachern

2:30 p.m. – Valdosta vs. Brookwood

5:30 p.m. – Colquitt County vs. North Gwinnett/Norcross

8:30 p.m. – Tucker vs. Norcross/North Gwinnett

Collins Hill should be in Mill Creek’s spot. Far better team and that was definitely shown during the season.

Say it ain’t so … a Kell Classic without Brookwood playing the prime-time game!? Someone here once said the teams usually remained the same because it wasn’t real cost-effective to make such a trip, and yet now we discover teams are clamoring to get in. This should be called the Brookwood-Hunter-Kell Classic, since Brookwood could be 0-10 the previous year and still get in. A former Brookwood coach runs this thing. And no one can convince me North Cobb or someone like East Paulding wouldn’t have brought a crowd and been a better opponent for Valdosta.

@theoleballcoach….Well if Tucker wins Friday…then they should be in the Corky Kell next Aug. right? Maybe you mean’t to type something else…just checking LOL.

I cringe at the thought of NG playing Tucker. No matter what people say about Tucker’s teams every season, even if some of it is true, those players will clean your clock and eat your lunch! LOL They play so hard and so physical on every play that it’s impossible to not enjoy watching them play…unless of course they’re playing your team LOL. It’s about time Tucker got the chance to play in the highest classification. It just makes AAAAAA even more stacked.

The 2011 AAAA title game featured two of the hardest playing/ hitting teams I’ve seen at the high school level. LJ wasn’t ready to hang with the Tucker program yet, but dang were those two teams layin the wood to each other.

Coach Lamar, you ought to be proud of how much you, your excellent coaching staff and players have accomplished in such a short period. Keep working hard, keep these boys first and continue to demand and expect excellence in the classroom as well as the field. You have 100% support from the Tucker community.

Best of luck this Friday night

To @theoleballcoach, please stop putting out that Tucker fans cheer when opposing players are injured. We are not that kind of fan base or community. As a matter of fact, Tucker’s excellent medical staff, 2 of which are physicians are present at every game. They are always on the sidelines at every game wearing the same uniform as our coaches and always offer their services to any inhured player regardless of his team. Anytime someone is immobile at any Tucker game, look at how many Tucker uniforms typically rush to the field offering to help. Those are physicians and our head coach typically. This is a caring community. Don’t try to belittle that!

As @NGHS09 stated, our teams every year pride themselves on superior speed and physicality which feeds our defense. Our fans have grown accustomed to big hits and have always cheered them ecstatically, but we draw the line when a kid is seriously hurt. I know you are referring to the hit that temporarily put Deshaun Watson out of the semi-final game. I cheered the hit at first too, but once we saw he was’nt getting up, the cheering was replaced with concern for Deshaun. We didn’t care whose team he played for at that point. We just wanted the young man to be ok…and he was. The fact that you heard some chatter and whooping does not characterize our entire fan base, so please stop with the generalizations.

In addition to the Corky Kell Classic, Tucker will be playing Booker T. Washington (Miami) at the start of the season. Remember the team the destroyed Norcross 55-0! Should be an interesting 2014 Season!

Tucker your Dekalb County/Central Georgia kiddy football ends tomorrow…welcome to big boy Football..Norcross OR North Gwinnett, you loose by at least 2 touchdowns plus easily….Hope you win tommorrwo night…there will be championships games for you in the forseeable future.

I remember the oh we are so much better than Gainesville, look at what Buford did to them…yet you needed a late game drive to win beat them on a wet field..if the field was dry you would have lost.

Should be some good matchups for the Brookwood Invitational, I mean Kell Classic. Good to see Tucker in AAAAAA. They will make the classification even better. Just wish they would have been put in one of the Gwinnett regions. That would have been fun. They are about a mile and a half from the county line and will be traveling to the southside of Atlanta to play their region games????????????? Although if they had been put in Region 7AAAAAA, parents of the original teams would have been crying that it made it harder for their teams to make the playoffs.

Tucker will be like the 8th grader that bullied the hallways in MS, then walks into 9th grade with the same swagger, only to get shoved into a locker and has his underpants pulled up his backside. Just sayin’ TuckerD – you need to learn to walk before you run with the big dogs.

@TuckerD == Half the comments are coming from those that don’t know. Lot of first year posters. Much of what you are hearing is the same thing we heard last year. Football is football and Tucker will do just fine. I hope we face each other late in the season. That leaves room for us both to set it up for the region title. On the other hand, it would be nice to face each other early in the region schedule giving the loser time to get back on a run for the playoffs.

@Sportnut I agree that Tucker will be fine. It’s just the Bravado that they think they’ll just walk through a 6A schedule is foolish.

We all know how hard winning every week in 6A is. Especially Regions 7, 1, 4, 8, 2, in that order. Just my opinion. Region 7 has proved it is the SEC if GA HS Football. Tucker will be strong enough to get a 3 or 4 seed for sure. 2 seed with a key win, but I don’t see them winning the region. Lovejoy is still strong, but with coaching changes, who knows. But I believe Region 2 will get region 7 in the first round next year?

And while we are at it. Colquitt loses to N/NG in the Dome and starts 0-1. Archer destroys SC. Mill Creek beats Mac. Tucker will lose to either N/NG. Book it !

@Gwinnett_Fan_66 – I second, third, fourth, fifth & sixth the Tucker fans on “WHO SAID TUCKER would come in 2014 and go 10-0”. Every Tucker supporter on this blog knows that the Tigers move to GA highest class will come with challenges, but we welcome this opportunity. In the BIG stage of GA HS football one county has been overlooked, thought as undisciplined, called Thugs, low class, poor sportsmanship, subpar facilities, etc, but yet has field some of GA BEST college athletes and this is DeKalb. Tucker has the chance and opportunity to prove to others in the state, that DeKalb belongs in the talk and the Tigers have proved they are the team to walk thru the door. This announcement is not only to showcase one of GA’s better football PROGRAMS, but to represent a segment of quality football that is being played outside of south GA, Cobb, and Gwinnett.

Congratulations go out to all of TUCKER football and it’s supporters – YOU HAVE EARN THE RIGHT TO THIS SHOWCASE, and in prime time, it doesn’t get in better than this in GA HS football.

@itsonlywrite – TuckerD commented well about Tucker’s future. But let me add a couple of points. Tucker does not rebuild, but reload. As the seniors complete their HS football experience, there are many freshmen, sophomores, and juniors prepared and ready to continue the tradition. Tucker’s middle school and youth feeder programs are fully loaded to feed the Tiger Den. And as a long time Tucker fan, I can say this – there will be a couple of transfers that will add value toward the Tiger’s success. As far as Tucker’s continue to field a strong defense, we call it ‘THE HIT SQUAD’, you can’t play on Tucker’s defense unless you can HIT. Good luck to your Elephants and remember, you want have Tucker in your way toward state.

If not a Creekside supporter, then please be a 6A supporter and if so, we will see you in 2014, but the Tigers have some unfinished business and we will trash-talk in about 8 months, until then, Tucker reserve the right to silence you. Tucker has better players and better coaching than every team in the State. The only team that has more talent top to bottom this year was Stephenson. They had over 22 D1 prospects c/o 2014-2016
Next was Tucker.
Next was North Gwinnett and Norcross

But then you see the coaching come into play. Tucker, North Gwinnett, Norcross, still playing championship week….Stephenson….lost in 2nd round 28-7.
