Class AAAAA: Finalists Creekside, Tucker have a lot in common

It’s doubtful that any two teams that are matched up this weekend in the high school football state championship games are more alike than Class AAAAA finalists Creekside and Tucker.

Both teams are 14-0 and have rosters loaded with speed and college prospects. Both run the ball well and play outstanding defense. And both have young coaches who are seeking their first title as head coach but have championship experience as assistants. Even their team colors are virtually the same.

“That’s exactly how it is,” Tucker coach Bryan Lamar said of the teams’ resemblance to each other. “Both teams run the ball, fly around on defense and have got young coaches that were on championship staffs as defensive coordinators. It’s just very, very similar.”

The teams will meet for the title at 8:30 p.m. on Friday at the Georgia Dome.

Lamar is in his second season as head coach at his alma mater. He was an assistant on the Tigers’ first state championship team in 2008. His counterpart, Olten Downs, is in his first season at Creekside after spending the past two years at Riverdale. Downs was on the staff at Carver-Columbus when the Tigers won the 2007 Class AAA title.

Creekside runs for 214.4 yards per game, primarily coming from 1,000-yard rushers Dexter Knox and Bricen Terry, who have a combined 2,557 yards and 38 touchdowns on 387 carries this season. Tucker averages more yards rushing (232.0) but spreads the carries around more evenly. Quarterback Joseph Farrar is the leading rusher with 716 yards, and 19 Tigers have at least one carry.

Creekside and Tucker also rank among the top five teams in Class AAAAA in scoring defense for the season, including the playoffs, giving up less than 13 points per game.

If there is a difference between the teams, it’s that Creekside is much more likely to pass. The Seminoles’ Felix Harper is 161-for-239 passing for 2,358 yards with 35 touchdowns and just four interceptions. Tucker’s Farrar has thrown for 916 yards and 14 touchdowns and attempts less than seven passes per game.

“We’re very balanced,” Downs said. “We pride ourselves on being multiple. We’re just going to take whatever the defense gives us. If they’re going to allow us to run it, then we’re definitely going to take advantage of it. If they’re going to force us to throw the football, then we’re going to take advantage of that as well.”

Tucker is seeking its third state title in six years, while Creekside is playing in a state final for the first time.

“It should be one of those old-school battles,” Lamar said. “I don’t see a lot of points being put up, so hopefully we can slow them down a little bit. That’s going to be a tall task.”

Creekside is going to wipe the turf of the GA Dome with Tucker. Tucker’s play calling on offense and their offensive line will finally fail them for good this time. And on the biggest stage. They got lucky against us, mays, East Paulding and Gainesville. They will not be so lucky against Creekside. Their OC and Their OL will thank themselves for letting that entire team down.

Friday will be oh so lovely.

Here we go, anther crab in the basket. These comments are why many in DeKalb football struggle to get out of the 1st and 2nd round. Thank Tucker for the new uniforms and equipment the Jaguars will receive, because if it’s was left to Stephenson, ALL of DeKalb’s football teams would be lacking. The most important factor, for the next couple of years in Jaguar football – “No Tucker to rain on their sunshine”. Man, go take a nap like a kindergartner.

@SHS Jags c/o 2009, do you mean like Tucker wiped your butt all over Hallford? and then North Paulding made you look like a bunch of cheerleaders and wiped your arses all over Paulding county? Do you mean like that?

Don’t hate. We all lost to Tucker but I didnt see it as luck. We, especially you just couldnt get the job done. Now if you want details, your team was publicly advertised as the best team in Georgia and you called yourselves members of the SEC. Why, I don’t know but you did. You even took 5 really good players from Tucker and still you underachieved. WOW! I would be angry too.

By the way @SHS, I feel your pain…..you were celebrating a victory against Tucker prematurely when those boys reached deep and took your hearts. I would act like a bee-atch too. Bee-Atch!

Stop hatin and have the decency and common sense to keep your girlishness to yourself. If it is your year to get uniforms, Dekald should hold back and penalizd you for wasting county gas and driving all the way to Paulding Co. to get embarassed, destroyed, punched in the mouth, bullied and bitch-slapped in the rain. SMH. Neeeeee— please!

Earlier this week while going over Ch.1 the question was asked if we can throw. Please take out your paper and pens………The Seminoles’ Felix Harper is 161-for-239 passing (a mere 67% completion rate) for 2,358 yards with 35 touchdowns and just FOUR interceptions. Tucker’s Farrar has thrown for 916 yards and 14 touchdowns and attempts less than seven passes per game.

Any questions about Creekside’s throwing ability and Note: The QB is in the 10th grade.

Extra Credit will be given to the student who can answer this question: What team did Coach Lamar lose to in his final game of his high school career?

@SHS, wake up! Creekside is playing Tucker, not Stephenson.

There you go dreaming again, but you have your teams mixed up. The one in your dream is wearing blue and black and is still choking on a “North Paulding Seagle Touchdown”……………………and is also in b-ball season.

Your wish shall not come true! Get him @MLReigns.

@Creekside-Dad – The answer to your question is “Coach Lamar lost to Creekside” and after this Friday will be a special treat for Coach Lamar, a victory over his past demon.

If you are a DeKalb fan, a 5A Region 6 fan and can’t support the ONLY team left, then Tucker does not need your support and crazy comments. Stay off the blogs and GOOD LUCK next year, because you will need it. Which team has brought our schools, kids, and communities’ recognition? My 2014 support goes out to the Lions of MLK. OMG, certain bloggers are STILL living in the past, which is what got them an EARLY exit in the 2013 playoff and possible past championship runs – GET A GRIP!!!

@5AReg6Fan CORRECT! Creekside now looks like you’ve did your homework. You may now take your seat in the Dome and watch the show. I talk to my son last night after practice and he mentioned that the D is ready. I’m really thinking that Tucker will not score. This could go either way for coach Lamar. When you size us up and you guys have read the stats and i kinda wanted to give more extra credit. But AJC has given away some of our stats. We have a well balanced team Running and Passing. But we stop throwing the ball going into the playoffs due to teams not being able to stop the run. i’d love to see how Tucker will come out defensively. What will you try to stop first? that’s going to be a hard one. I hope everyone blogging is coming to the game. Please come, guys im not taking nothing away from Tucker. Great Program Great Coaches even Greater Athletes!!! But there’s a ‘New Sheriff” in town. Out of the woods deep of in South Fulton comes Creekside.

@Creekside-Dad- It looks like you have a class full of under achievers. You need to have some parent teacher conferences before the test. Your teaching certificate is going to get pulled fooling with your students. Maybe the AJC can provide tutorial to help them out. Pick your poison. Do you stack the box and get beat deep or do you play it honest and die a slow death? What is a coach to do? We will definitely stack the box and dare them to throw. Or will we make it seem like we are stacking the box and play them into a pick 6? Are these questions in your lesson plan or is that too advanced for them?

Let’s see if you blog in the future in support of the NOLES. Many Tucker bloggers do not have a child on the team and have been in support of the Tigers for years – this is one of the foundations that make Tucker Football the cream of DeKalb. This might be Creekside year, but its TUCKER’s year-after-year-after-year. You are not playing against some start-up PROGRAM or a once in every occasion good football team, we’ve been there and done that – Just another appearance for the Tiger of Tucker. And the thought of Tucker not scoring, is just crazy talk. This will be the Creekside first test of the 2013 football season – you can bank that!!!

I’m with you bro, these two clowns didn’t show up until week 9 or 10, they wasn’t to sure what type of team they had so they were playing it safe. True bandwagon fans. Next year I guess we won’t hear from them because this is there only team of destiny. This is the only time there team has been on a mission. They are playing for a reason now. Next year they’ll be back to just an average team.

I have been a Creekside fan since 1998 when Tab Bonner was the running back for Creekside. I have been on the GAVSV blog since then, but I rarely comment. My son was the running back for Creekside in 2003. I realized back then that no matter how much the fans talk, boast, brag or whatever we still can’t get out there on that field and play for our team. So I have learned patience. I simply just read all the trash talk and just smile, knowing most of these bloggers want play one down. So I let the kids play on the field and support them in every way I can. There are a lot of Creekside supporters on the blogs, most of us just choose to let the players do our talking on the field. Good luck to those CREEKSIDE SEMINOLES. I’ll be the one cheering the loudest Friday night at the Dome for Creekside. Best of luck to you Tucker Tigers, hope we both have a great, injury free game.

Word around town (from my coworker who has kids at Creekside) is that Creekside is gonna win (whoop Tucker’s arse actually) because that’s what they’ve been doing all season, and more importantly they’re gonna win the state title in honor of their fallen soldier (Rest In Paradise #2, btw). Creekside is also gonna win, according to him, cause DeKalb Co can’t/won’t beat South Fulton – he used, as an example, that Frank Ski Kids Bowl other bloggers have referenced. His kids also thought Tucker is a white school!!!! mwuahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!! I can’t wait ’til Friday!

@Realist123, that’s not the first time someone has said that about Tucker. I laugh, and correct them, each time. I’m very proud of the fact that my kid is surrounded by a multitude of ethnicities, especially in a learning environment. Constructed of red brick and stone to be more specific … My coworker and I have also had the “brick” discussion before (in general, not referring to Tucker).

As far as Friday is concerned: let people talk the talk while you walk the walk! Lol! ;-) My coworker believes Creekside will win because they’ve dedicated their season to #2 and they’ve been beating up on teams all season. Like I told him, that’s all well and good but Tucker will win because that’s what we do!

Like I have stated many times, you are the King of the castle in my opinion. We are just raiding the castle to dethrone the King. We are trying to get where you already are. BELIEVE IT!!! I just know what we have and what Coach Downs and staff are building. This will go down as one of the greatest teams GA has seen. It’s not your fault that you are the team that we are going to prove it to. You should be honored to be in this game with us because when people are talking about this team years from now. They are going to say “Do you remember that loaded Creekside team that beat Tucker in the State?” We will send you to 6A with a bang. When you win the 6A title next year, you will be able to tell your victims about this lil ole school in the swamp from 5A that we were the best team that yall have played. I know who your son is, or at least I have it narrowed down to two possibilities. But so you know I wore #1 that year.
Talk about destiny… Last years team could have easily been playing for the championship, but couldn’t hold on a 4 and goal.
Now a year later being one win away from a perfect season and the only thing that’s in your way is the team that ended your high school career. Coach Lamar and #21 are the two responsible for letting the TE catch the game winning touchdown.
