Football season is winding down and we are just days away from a champion being crowned in Class AA. However, basketball season is gearing up, so as we transition, Tuesday blogs will be dedicated to basketball for the remainder of the football state playoffs.
With basketball season about to kick into full gear, let’s recap last season in Class AA region-by-region on the boys side. Girls will be previewed next week.
Teams: Berrien, Brooks County, Cook, Early County, Fitzgerald, Pelham, Thomasville
2012-13 region champion: Pelham
2012-13 playoff teams: Pelham, Early County, Thomasville, Cook County
How the region fared in the playoffs: Pelham was one of two No. 1 seeds to be eliminated in the first round of last year’s playoffs, falling 56-53 to Macon County. No team from Region 1 advanced past the second round.
Teams: Atkinson County, Bacon County, Benedictine, Bryan County, Jeff Davis, Long County, McIntosh Academy County, Metter, St. Vincent’s Academy, Toombs County, Vidalia
2012-13 region champion: Vidalia
2012-13 playoff teams: Vidalia, McIntosh County Academy, Benedictine, Jeff Davis
How the region fared in the playoffs: Vidalia narrowly missed advancing to the semifinals, losing 69-67 to eventual state runner-up Bleckley County in the quarterfinals. McIntosh County Academy reached the second round with a 75-50 win over Dublin.
Teams: Davidson Fine Arts, Dublin, East Laurens, Harlem, Johnson (Augusta), Josey, Laney, Screven County, Westside (Augusta)
2012-13 region champion: Westside
2012-13 playoff teams: Westside, Laney, Dublin, Harlem
How the region fared in the playoffs: Westside advanced to the second round, narrowly falling to eventual state runner-up Bleckley County, 61-60. Laney advanced to the semifinals and fell to eventual state-champion GAC, 64-56. It was the narrowest margin of defeat for GAC in the playoffs.
Teams: Bleckley County, Crawford County, Lamar County, Macon County, Monticello, Northeast Macon, Putnam County, Taylor County
2012-13 region champion: Taylor County
2012-13 playoff teams: Taylor County, Bleckley County, Northeast Macon, Macon County,
How the region fared in the playoffs: Taylor County reached the second round before falling to Laney 68-52. Macon County advanced to the quarterfinals as a No. 4 seed, beating Pelham 56-53 and McIntosh County Academy 54-53 before losing 73-46 to Laney.
Teams: Bowdon, Bremen, Chattahoochee County, Heard County, Jordan, Kendrick, Manchester, Spencer, Temple
2012-13 region champion: Jordan
2012-13 playoff teams: Jordan, Spencer, Manchester, Kendrick
How the region fared in the playoffs: All teams advanced at least past the first round, making Region 5 the only in Class AA to do so . Jordan reached the semifinals, where it lost to Bleckley County, 64-62. Spencer beat Rabun County and lost in the second round to GAC, 88-54. Manchester beat Greene County 76-71 and No. 1 seed Calhoun 73-70 before falling to GAC 77-52 in the quarterfinals. Kendrick knocked off No. 1 seed Jefferson before falling to Model 92-76.

2012-13 playoff teams: GAC, Wesleyan, Westminster, Hapeville
How the region fared in the playoffs: GAC won state for the third time in four seasons with a 69-52 win over Bleckley County in the finals. No other team advanced.
Teams: Armuchee, Calhoun, Chattooga, Coosa, Dade County, Model, Morris Innovative, Murray County, Pepperell
2012-13 region champion: Calhoun
2012-13 playoff teams: Calhoun, Model, Dade County, Coosa
How the region fared in the playoffs: Calhoun reached the second round, edging Hapeville 59-55 before losing 73-70 to Manchester. Model advanced to the quarterfinals before losing 84-63 to Jordan. Dade County reached the second round before losing 97-79 to Jordan.
Teams: Greene County, Jefferson, Oglethorpe County, Rabun County, Riverside Military, Social Circle, Union County, Washington-Wilkes
