Tucker 20, Gainesville 14

Tucker marched 53 yards in 11 plays to score the winning touchdown with 2:22 left, and the Tiger defense held Gainesville to tie a season low with 14 points, as Class AAAAA No. 1 Tucker advanced to the state finals with a 20-14 win.

It wasn’t a flashy night for a Tucker offense that’s averaged close to 40 points during the season, and it was marred by penalties early.

But when the Tigers needed a score to avoid overtime against the defending state champs, they had enough in the tank.

The winning drive started on their own 47-yard line, after a Duke Shelley punt return set them up in good field position.

And, with the rain coming down hard, the Tigers (14-0) stuck to the ground game that got them to this point.

All 11 plays on the drive were runs, and Dominick Sanders took it the final 6 yards for the score that put Tucker in front for the first time.

After that, the defense just needed one more stop.

Stops haven’t been easy to come by for Gainesville opponents, against an offense led by quarterback and Clemson commit Deshaun Watson. The Red Elephants (12-2) had scored at least 28 in every game since a 38-14 loss to Buford in Week 2, but the Tucker defense did everything it could to disrupt the senior signal caller and his no-huddle attack.

“The tempo was unbelievable starting the game; everything was quick, quick, quick,” Tucker coach Bryan Lamar said. “We tried to simulate it as best as we could in practice, but you can’t simulate the tempo. We just locked it down and mixed up blitzes and zones … and tried to keep him off balance.”

It worked, as Tucker picked him off four times on the night, the final one coming on the second play of Gainesville’s final possession, effectively ending the Red Elephants’ season.

Sanders was the biggest standout for Tucker, with 127 total yards, along with two touchdowns. Quarterback Joseph Farrar was 3 of 4 for 112 yards and a touchdown in the second half.

Watson finished 20 of 34 for 185 yards, with 1 passing touchdown, 1 rushing touchdown and 4 interceptions.

Tucker will play Creekside for the Class AAAAA title at the Georgia Dome next weekend.

First off I want to tell every Tucker doubter who said we were un disciplined and way past our glory days to go to hell!! Secondly I want to tell those who criticized Coach Lamar and his staff to look at what this man has done!! Even in this game you boo’d him!! That’s our coach!! He probably don’t read blogs but that’s a stand up guy and he is getting the job done and understand that it was his defenses that brought Tucker 2 state titles!!

Great Game Gainesville!!! At the end of the day, Tucker had more athletes!! D. Watson and the RB was getting hit all game long!! No separation from the receivers!! 4 picks and no big scrambles!!! Too much speed!! Great playing by our secondary especially the interception in the end zone on the first drive. Once the rain started falling, I knew it was a wrap for Gainesville. Seen Watson after the game, and the kid kept his chin in the air!! He has a bright future at Clemson! Will be rooting for him!!

Can’t wait to Saturday!! The battle of the Maroon and Gold!!! Seminoles vs Tigers!!!

@Gainesville-steve and @ cannon rules… I told y’all and all the rest of the Gainesville band wagons!! But like I’ve said d Watson havnt played a good defense that could stop him!! He is good but tucker showed him up! He got hurt in the 4th because he was gettin hit almost every play! Tucker made him run around for no reasons and his deep throws were picked off!! He was showed up by our #1 dominck sanders! He had 2 pics and 2 touchdowns on the night and #12 kirk tucker also picked him off! Tucker vs creekside for the title!!!!!!

@BcS2010: He shouldn’t have jumped!! That hit was DEVASTATING!!!! That hit pretty much sealed the deal!!! Then he came back with a knee brace on!!! He knew he couldn’t sit in the pocket!!! But Clemson is getting a great one!! People thought Gainesville was fast!! I told everybody that they wasn’t fast. Teams just couldn’t get pressure and DB’s would peek in the backfield!! They couldn’t do anything with that 33 stack!!!

Creekside has not been tested this year at all. They have had no adversity to overcome. I like Tucker alot next week because they are going to HIT Creekside EVERY PLAY and I think Creekside will tighten up. A close game breakes Tucker’s way in my opinion. Tucker has played with adversity most of the year and know how to win close games.

@ TuckerD, I sure did man! The game was everything that I predicted, I said that it was evenly match; Tucker defense did a little more by containing D. Watson forcing him out of the pocket and sacking him, causing 4 picks. I gave credit to Tucker before the game in overall defense package. Tucker control the tempo of game in the 4th qtr. and kept the ball away from d. Watson & company, I was very impressed. A shot goes to the coaches & ball players for a well played ball game.

@ the Gainesville coaches, players and community have nothing to hold their heads down about, they came to play, had control of the game until the 4th qtr. They fought hard on defense themselves and made some incredible stops against Tucker. JAB say; CONGRATULATIONS TO BOTH TEAMS..NOW LETS BRING IT HOME NEXT WEEK…

I don’t think Creekside has played a team as physical as Tucker this year. I’m willing to bet that those running back brothers get hit enough next Friday, they will think twice come the 4th quarter and will make mistakes. Watson looked unstoppable early but as the hits mounted, he softened and eventually wilted under the pressure. As I have said for years…offense sells tickets BUT, DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!!! On to the dome to close the deal!!!!

Gainesville Coaches coached their butts off!! Completely eliminated Tucker’s special teams with pooch kicks!! We always had a long field to drive!! At the end of the day, people see that Gainesville receivers are not fast and their tempo didn’t wear Tucker down!! I said it all week on the blog, the 33 stack was the perfect defense because the ponies could contain Watson! Sanders and Shelly shut it down in the secondary! And Watson took some shots!! The rain didn’t help Gainesville either! They speed sweep gashed them in the rain!!! And how about Tucker passing the ball in the 3rd!!!! Great Play Calling by the O coordinator that was bashed just 2 weeks ago!!!

First thing..D. Sanders(#1) is a beast!! Tucker too fast, Tucker too strong… Watson had em in the the first qtr. Tucker adjusted. No more Watson. All these teams THOUGHT they knew what speed looked like..And now they KNOW what speed looks like.

Tucker defense was great? Gainesville was up 14-0 but should have been 21 but the pick by #1 saved that and they didn’t give up the big pass play! Gainesville receivers were bigger but too slow and lets not forget that the game changed after the big kick return by #4

D. Watson was nothing Tucker has not seen before!! Our region prepared us for every team we seen. Stephenson and MLK moved the ball through the air and got are secondary better!! Mays and other teams got our line right. We have seen it before!! So when @JAB says we the SEC of 5A, I don’t believe it is to belittle other regions or teams, but the competition and diversity of the programs makes for great games during the regular season! We have beaten the #2 ranked team 2x this yr in Stephenson and Gainesville. We have beaten the defending champs and runner up in back to back weeks. Not saying that Creekside walked into the title game, because they earned their way, but look at our resume and to be 14-0 at this point is impressive!! Great region play gave this Tucker team the challenges to make this playoff run!!

@mikepete

The brothers you refer to on the Creekside team are numbers 1 and 4. They play defense, and a play or two on offense. The two running backs are numbers 12 and 44. The team plays snap to whistle all over the field every play. They take as much pride in a good block as they do in a good run. Haven’t seen Tucker this year but I do believe this Creekside team has more talent than the Tucker championship team did in 2011. They are just something special. I realize Tucker has a bit of experience factor on their side but I really think Creekside is a team of destiny and wins it. I do believe Tucker holds them under 40 and seen a game that is like 24-14, perhaps 31-21

@mikepete- Thank you for your kind words. The adversity that we have faced builds WAY MORE character and resolve than any Football Game could. We have faced good teams just like Tucker has. It is not our fault that we destroy every team that suits up against us. We have been in 2 dogfights this year. Our rivals Langston Hughes who had the #1 D in all classifications played us tight. We won 16-14. Whitewater who was our region rivals had us down by 2 scores with about 6 minutes to play and we won 27-23. We were tested early when teams actually had a chance. We are rolling now. You don’t average 47 points and give up 15 points in the playoffs without being a good team.

Congratulation Tucker yall played a great game. I’ve said it since the playoffs started , that the difference in this years Gainesville team and last years championship team was #81. No team had an answer for him. He was D Watsons safety valve when he did’nt have time to find his small receivers. I would have loved to see Tucker play against Gainesville team from last year. Once again good job Tucker.

@mikepete24 what hole do you live in first google Creekside after that pull your dictionary out and write the meaning of the word adversity. Then come back and blog about the adversity these young men has had to fight thru. Come on man they stronger mentally than some of these so called men out here. Most men fold up after what these 15-18 year young men was facing but look at them and who needs to be tested when you are prepared for all the test. Sounds like an excuse to just not give CREEKSIDE their props. Honestly I’m bout tired of blogging with y’all fake football experts. Put some titles up or Deeds. My bad you know nothing about adversity sure you’re clueless what a deed is. Look Peter Pan that’s what ya name should be 1st game of the season was against Langston who is a 6A team and made it deep off into the playoffs. Oh forgot to mention that we beat that Challenge 16-14. Good teams adjust they learn from their mistakes. We didn’t need to be tested or go thru any during the season “adversity” when you’re learning from your mistakes every week. Now that’s a team that prepares. Here’s something for you to take with you. “Lack of Preparation yields Piss Poor Productivity. Now you tell me who needs challenges or tough situations when you’re prepared. Did u get your dictionary out yet or you looking for a deed $200k or better………ADVERSITY

Tucker did a good job of shutting down our offense in the second half. Something few have done. Props to them. A very good team! But—-your fans (and cheerleaders!) should be ashamed for cheering when Watson went down with an injury. Lost my respect. You would NEVER see this behavior from Gainesville fans. Bunch of Thugs.
Also noticed we had more fan support there than Tucker. Speaks volumes.
GHS has nothing to be ashamed of losing to this team, but I’ll take our fans behavior, over theirs, any day.
