Lovett 35, Brooks County 12

By Stephen Black

Score Atlanta

Lovett dominated Brooks County 35-12 in a weather-delayed Class AA semifinal in Buckhead. Grant Haley ran for three touchdowns and 120 yards for the host Lions (13-1). Lovett’s defense held Brooks County (12-2) to 76 yards rushing and intercepted Trojans quarterback Malkom Parrish twice. Lovett rushed for 276 yards and had 353 yards of total offense.

Willie Candler hit Jack McGranahan on a 13-yard pass in the first quarter to give Lovett an early 7-0 lead. Haley scored twice in the second and Lovett led 21-0. Ijohn Parrish hit his brother, Malkom, on a 61-yard pass to get Brooks County on the board just before the half.

Haley and Murphy Lee each scored for Lovett in the third quarter to hand the Lions a commanding 35-6 lead.

The game was halted for 30 minutes in the second half due to stormy weather.

Have to agree with you, @jimmy jack. Number 10 should have been ejected after his second personal foul, but there plenty of others playing dirty.

On the other hand, the officials screwed BC several times by giving Lovett first downs when they were clearly short. I was sitting on the 50-yard line with the ball ending up right in front of me. On one of the plays, the ball was at least a half-yard short. Not a good night for either team as far as officiating.

Agree with @moto on the first down spot. I was like – oh this is how its gonna be.tonight.

Methinks private schools should have their own separate championship. Certainly some home-cooking officiating – (paid off ?) – like playing the game at a stadium definitely configured for home field advantage. I guess its ok for regular season games but for the playoffs in a game that required a coin toss to determine the home team and with all the other stadiums in metro Atlanta or even Cobb County.

Anyways …Go Lamar County !!!

Yea I imagine the refs were paid off. That was the difference in the game.

What remains unclear is whether or not the shafted Trojans ever made it home after the injustice. Their hapless bus caravan couldn’t seem to locate I-75 and was last seen lumbering though seemingly endless multipoint U turns on Northside Parway while the Brooks County Sheriff stopped traffic in both directions! Oh, the woe.

I don’t have a dog in this fight, but 35-12 does not sound like home cooking. 35-12 is a route. Home cooking is a questionable spot on a game winning drive. Sounds like Brooks had some cheap shot artists too, which will make a ref crew less inclined to cut you a break.

Congrats Lovett. Home-cookin? Please!. Anyone who doesn’t KNOW this team is the real deal, ain’t been watching. They had one of the toughest schedules of any team in the state and they came one overtime short of running the table – winning 33-21 in the 4th quarter with their back-up quarterback against Washington Co – who just won 37 – goose-egg! last night and now sits 14-0 and playing Buford for the state AAA title. I’d wish Lovett good luck on Saturday, but I don’t think they’ll need it.

Congrats Lovett. I guess Brooks Co. got a little Karma returned. At the Bowdon vs. Brooks, they were spitting in players faces and the refs overlooked it every time. They and their coach also taunted Bowdon fans before the game……Very poor sportsmanship…… Good luck in the Dome!!!

Toney they did the same to our team, Lovett, I guess they finally got what they deserved. A long bus ride home. Thats what poor sportsmanship gets you Brooks co.

Here’s a quote from Brooks Co. Head Coach Maurice Freeman:

“We put a beating on them, but they put points on us”

So, by “a beating” he means cheap shots after the play, spitting on players, etc. This was easily the dirtiest team I’ve seen in HS football in awhile, and it’s clear it comes from the coaching staff. In they end, they got what they deserved. On to the next!

Lovett showed a lot of class just by offering to shake hands with Brooks Co. after the game. I don’t blame the players. Blame the coaches, the adults. Is this what you teach 17 year olds about character?

Lovett is a well-coached, disciplined team. But, I have to agree with the one-sided officiating. An obvious personal foul face mask to Parrish and horse collar tackle on Parrish in the 1st Qtr were not called. Anyone notice the illegal procedure on the fake punt? Three times Lovett was given a 1st down spot that was clearly short. As far as the personal foul calls against #10, the calls must have been hitting too hard. The hits were definitely not late hits. Anyone who knows anything about Maurice Freeman knows that he is one of the most highly regarded coaches in GA high school sports. Dirty play? I think not. Aggressive play? Definitely. Lovett was the best team Friday night. Holding Brooks Co’s high powered offense to 12 points was impressive.

@ Sportswriter

1. Given that the overwhelming majority of the 100+ penalty yards assessed against Brooks Co. were of the “deadball” variety, that makes them, by default, late.

2. You prefer to defend the coach, that’s fine. I saw, with my own eyes, everything I needed to see about thier coach and the way he runs his program on Friday night.

3. It’s easy to explain away poor performance by scapegoating others, which appears to be the tact you prefer to take. “Lovett was the better team, but…” is not the way to build character or teach young men how to handle adversity.

Thank you Sportswriter! Maurice Freeman is a good man who would never allow his players to do unethical things without punishment. He held a key player out of the first quarter of a game that was going to impact winnning our region, but he did it to make the young man respect the rules.
When our team has played in the North Georgia area we have played predominantly white teams, our team is mostly black, our players have been called terrible names like “porch monkey”, and the “N” word. The comments about our players spitting on other players might be a result of this kind of taunting thats intended to create personal foul penalties. All I can say is that as a white woman myself, I am horrified that this is allowed to go on in a game. The refs hear this and allow it! This does upset our players and I have seen them retaliate. As for as the Lovett game, that was a joke. The fix was in the moment Lovett fumbled the ball during their second possession, Brooks County clearly recoverd the ball. The Head Ref overuled the other ref and gave the ball back to Lovett. It was a game full of calls against us. Lovett could get by with all the pass interference they wanted to but if our player did the same, we were penalized, this destroyed our passing game, they were all over us constantly. If the ball was short for a first down, the refs had no problem giving them that first down even if it meant giving them a half a yard! The ball was constantly spotted in their favor, no problem giving Lovett a full yard, the refs never could remember where that ball should be after a play. I could go on! To summarize, the refs won this game for Lovett. I don’t know if they were paid off, or if they just chose to help Lovett but either way, this group of refs should never be allowed to call another game for any team in the state of Georgia. If anyone doubts what I am saying PLEASE find a copy of this game and watch it for yourself!!! Back in July, most of our BC Trojans arrived on the scene of a car accident that killed 3 of their fellow Trojans, these guys were some of our best players. It hurt our entire community. Our team struggled to overcome this loss. They dedicated this season to the guys they call BC3. This group has played their hearts out, wanting to win the State Championship for BC3. To have that opportunity taken away by cheating refs is a very bitter pill to swallow. Making matters worse is we had some Lovett fans sending messages thru social media saying we need to have more Brooks County players killed! Football in Georgia needs a good cleaning out, it needs to start at GHSA, they must know about this!

John, Please go back and look at the other posts on this thread. You will see that even people who HATE Brooks County said we were shafted by the refs! Lovett was penalized 4 times for 30 yards. Brooks County was penalized 14 times for 123 years. You really don’t think that can result in a 35 to 12 route? You obviously are a fan of one of those dirty teams we play that hire these cheating refs. Anyone can go back and look at the game. They will see it for themselves. They don’t have to take my word or yours. Lovett might could have beat us without the refs help but we will never know because they had a lot of help John!!!!

@Brooks County Fan. I admire your passion, albeit misplaced. Speaking with a number of Lovett players, a vast number, they consistently spoke of pokes in the eye, spitting, the grabbing of their…junk, taunting. The way it looks is that this was a team that came unglued. Looking at their record they were in unfamiliar territory. They were the ones being dominated. They had no answers and they looked to leadership and found none.

Hopefully, each team will learn from this. Sportsmanship is supposed to be what sports teaches not revenge or spite.

By the way GHSA assigns the refs. The home team has no say so in the assignments of these people.

Brooks County Fan, you must have seen another game than the one on the riverbank last night. Your team was the dirtiest team I have seen in 40 years of high school football. Our running back came out of the pile after the 2nd play hobbling after someone grabbed his testicles, and this was not the only time it happened to others on our team. Our running back also came out of the pile on our third possession having had his eyes scratched at the bottom of the pile. Your kids constantly speared our runners when they were on the ground using their helmets as weapons. What do you have to say about the off sides call at the end of the game when we were taking the victory position to end the game? I call it another attempt to hurt one of our players as the game was over. Spitting in kids faces, really, and you call your players dirty. You are the only team we have played that do this and it speaks poorly of your program. Maybe others had called your players bad names, but not our players, we have quite a few African Americans on our team and in our school. It is called “CLASS”, your coaches should make it a priority and then teach it. Get over the officiating, we had never met the officials either as the GHSA appoints them. The better team won last night, period, and your comments are consistent with your team as being CLASSLESS.

Football Fan, I am saddened that I just spent a lot of time describing the names YOUR Lovett team called our players. AJC won’t even post it because the racial slurs are so horrible! You really need to talk to your team because this is likely to create racial problems between your school and the public down the road. All I know is our players have told us the awful racial slurs that your team called our team last night. I can’t agree with our team retaliating but they are just older kids right now. None of them are full grown men. Their coach has worked with them t overlook the taunts of teams like yours but there is only so much that man can do. He is a very fine man and he wants his team to do right. On the other hand YOUR coach can do something about this from his side. I would think in this day and age such classy students as you have in your school would KNOW this in wrong!

You are upset because your win has been tainted by the truth. The game was stolen! Its a shame your team didn’t win it fair and square like you did in OUR stadium in 2010. Then you would have something to be proud of. No one on this page has mentioned the horrible things you have accused our team of doing. The video of the game speaks for itself. Everyone on this page has spoken their mind about the game. Many teams who hate our team say you stole the game. So its not just my opinion. You have personally attacked me calling names. Sir there is a lot of evidence that shows it is you and your team that is clearly CLASSLESS!

I saw the end of the game. Lovett was in victory formation when Brooks County players crashed the line and tried to injure Lovett players. That was classless, and here’s what’s interesting, the BC coach didn’t pull the offending players off the field. Also, why on Earth would Lovett, which has black players, shout the words your players are accusing them of doing? Sometimes people just can’t accept a defeat. It’s part of life. Move on and stop living your life through your sons.

Many of Lovett’s team players looked older than high school age boys. Where were they recruited from? Why would a private school with funds to recruit want to play against public schools? Why would a private school with so much CLASS have portable potties scattered around their field? Why would this CLASSY school not have a permanent visitor’s section? Do you all think it is a CLASS ACT to have your visitors watch from the end zones? Was it CLASSY to turn your noses up at the visiting team’s fans as they entered your inadequate stadium? Was it CLASSY to have the Dome game printed on your schedule before you knew for sure you would go to dome? You obviously knew!! Show some CLASS and spend money on plumbing and permanent seats for visitors. Better yet give your homeside to visitors and you all sit on the end zones! Treat your visitors with kindness and they will return it to you! You also showed a lack of CLASS when you turned on loud music to drown out our Band. Say what you want about no cheating on your part but the Ref in charge made sure you won and it’s all on video! Oh and I saw your team and no you don’t have quite a few african americans!

We’re not accepting this defeat simply because it was not earned fairly. You know good and well if it was the other way around, you would feel the same way. Most of the fans knew we were going to be cheated before we even went up there, but our team has alot of support especially after the tragedy we’ve went through. As soon as Lovett put 14 on us in the first few minutes, I knew it was going to be a long night. Don’t get me wrong, Lovett is a good team. Good players and some who have been recruited by collages. But the referees were acting quite like they favored Lovett. Something was up..

If I remember correctly, yall couldnt even muster enough fans to overflow into yalls section that we nicely made for yall at the side of the endzone! Also, if you noticed, ALL lovett fans parked at a nearby church so that yall could have an easy place to park after a 5 hour drive! I dont know how you think our players looked older than high school aged boys. Wow, if anything, brooks country looked much bigger and faster! Oh, and for having the Dome scheduled on a schedule, it is called OPTIMISM. If you look at any college football team’s schedule, they have their conference championship scheduled at the end of their season! So stop trying to make excuses as to why we are a much classier, better coached team!

Trojan Fan, I have no dog in this fight, but I have been to Lovett’s stadium and agree with everything you said. It’s a dump, which is sad for a private school with lots of money. Although, because the river is bordering the stadium, they can’t put visitor’s bleachers on the opposite side. Unless the visitors want to watch the game from sailboats!

Look on the GHSA site under AA forum and you will see the comments Lovett fans made about our fan base. It’s stuff like “Wait until they get here and see our mansions.” Like our fans have never seen a nice home! Some of us do have mansions. Yes. we are a much poorer fan base than Lovett but these comments about how well they treated us? The people who were out there directing traffic acted like they didn’t want to help us when we stopped to ask directions to their parking lot. I’m not sure how they knew we were the opposing fans but I guess if you aren’t driving a BMW, Mercedes, etc. that’s a dead giveaway for them. I saw one of their fans, a tall nice looking well dressed (probably mid-twenties) white man stop and survey our crowd then he said OUT LOUD “Their fans look like trash to me!” Their people in the concession stands were snobs. Their fans were snobs.

Please don’t tell me that their football players aren’t capable of uttering racial slurs under their breath to our team. No one ever said they were screaming those slurs. They didn’t have but a few black players and that doesn’t matter one bit. The culture of black people allows them to say things to each other that white people can’t say without hurt feelings. We live in a town with them, work with them, and we know their culture. We aren’t looking at them from our mansions and high rise work places.

For all their class, their bathrooms were full of water on the floor and the toilets would barely flush. Ran out of toilet paper before the game was over! And yes they did have those wonderful portable potties for us which actually might have been nicer than their other facilities! LOL! For such a wealthy school, Lovett is pitiful!

I have just pulled up other teams scores for last nights games. Everything I’m seeing tells me no one is really complaining about being cheated upon. This game is a different story. It was other team’s fans complaining first not ours. I only complained when I saw people complaining about our “dirty” team I felt the other side needed to be told. Even here on this site we are being bullied by Lovett fans! They didn’t bully the other teams for their accusations about Lovett cheating! But they think we are trash so anything goes…..

Trojan Fan is right, when our fans heard they would ride 5 hours on a bus to sit in horrible seating that was quickly put up for our fans, people were hesitant to sit on that stuff. Dangerous! And they knew it would be difficult to see the game from the endzone. Many of our fans chose to watch from the comfort of their home.

All you Trojan fans, we might all well leave these “high class” bullies alone. People who know of them KNOW them. No further points to prove. And yes the TRUTH is on video!!!

if someone would post the game tape (if someone has it) then I would be more than happy to go through it and point out the dirty bs attacks that the trojans had. stop acting the part of the victim in this, no one is “bullying” you, just pointing out observations from the game (not pulling biased and made up crap from who knows where). your team made it a goal to knock out our players, as seen by the entire crowd (excluding yourself of course). lovett did not hire these refs, the GHSA did, so stop saying we payed them off because we had as much contact with them as brooks did. the seating was not “dangerous”, it was approved by the GHSA and was perfectly safe, just empty. Last thing, i mentioned this before, but stop playing the victim card. if you look back at all of your comments, you always go back to how bc was wronged by the big bad somebody (whoever it was in that instance). lovett has had its fair share of bad officiating (it almost cost us the laney game last week!) so we know it, you’re not special in that regard. i’ll say it again, post the film and we can point out the dirty team was. the TRUTH is on video

The game is over and it was decided by the coaches and players. It is sad that the fans can’t move on. Good sportsmanship is also the responsibility of the parents and the friends and the students of each school. In the wake of the game, and in spite of disappointment or elation, we all have a responsibility to uphold sportsmanship. Sour grapes about officials, supposed misconduct by players, missed calls, or poor coaching, are inappropriate. Certainly not becoming of anyone has the best interests of his or her school at heart. Your coaches and players would be ashamed if they knew.
