List/Trivia/Quote: 40 teams have reached semifinals as No. 3 or No. 4 seed

LIST

It’s unusual for a No. 3 or a No. 4 seed to make it to the state finals, but it will happen tonight with the winner of the North Gwinnett-McEachern game. Here are the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds that have made the semifinals since 1996, when the GHSA first allowed third- and fourth-place teams from a region to make the state playoffs.

TRIVIA

North Gwinnett could become the first team in the highest classification to win four consecutive road games to reach the state final since 2008, when the fourth-round games (semifinals) were moved out of the Georgia Dome. Three teams have done it before. Which can you name? (Answer Monday)

Answer to Thursday’s question: St. Pius, in 1968, was the first private school to win a football state championship in the GHSA.

COACH SPEAK

“Expect to win.”

- Charlton County coach Rich McWhorter

GHSF Daily asked coaches during the offseason if they have a favorite quote, saying or motto. We’ll run a different one each day. Coaches are invited to add to our list.

And that 1968 Pius team was coached by George Maloof, the father of Keith Maloof, the Norcross coach, and Kevin Maloof, the former coach at Dacula.

I think Colquit County was a three seed in 2010 and won its semifinal game.
