List/Trivia/Quote: Griffin has most wins since 1980 without reaching finals

Griffin has played good football for decades, so it is surprising that the Bears have not played in a state championship game since 1980. That made GHSF Daily wonder which schools have won the most playoff games since 1980 without reaching the finals. Sure enough, it’s Griffin. That will change if the Bears beat Wayne County this week in the semifinals.

TRIVIA

There are seven private schools in the semifinals, four in the Class A private division, plus Lovett and Benedictine in AA and Marist in AAAA. Which private school was the first to win a football state championship in the GHSA? Hint: It occurred in 1968. (Answer Friday)

Answer to Wednesday’s question: Camden County was the last team to lose its first game but still repeat as state champion. Camden lost its opener to Grayson in 2009.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Phil. 4:13)

GHSF Daily asked coaches during the offseason if they have a favorite quote, saying or motto. We’ll run a different one each day. Coaches are invited to add to our list.

Definitely St. Pius X

Cain, I think you were actually at Grady Stadium in 1970 when Woodward Academy beat Dykes (now Sutton Middle).
