AA blog: What to look for Friday

Here’s what to look for Friday in Class AA:

What will be the finals matchup?

  • A pair of 13-0 teams from the left side of the state playoffs bracket will meet in the semifinals when the No. 1-ranked Lamar County Trojans host the No. 6-ranked Benedictine Cadets. Both the Trojans and Cadets are No. 1 seeds and the Trojans won the coin flip that determined home-field advantage. With the game in Barnesville, the Cadets will make a three-hour, 200-mile commute from Savannah to play the first semifinal game in school history. Last week, the Cadets defeated Calhoun 35-14 in what was actually their closest game of the season. The Trojans are in the state semifinals for the second time in school history – and second year in a row – but have never reached the finals. They defeated defending state-champion Jefferson 35-24 after trailing at halftime for the first time this season. Benedictine and Lamar County have played just once before – last year in the second round of the state playoffs. Lamar County hosted and won 24-21.
  • The right side of the bracket also pins two No. 1 seeds against each other, as the No. 2-ranked Lovett Lions host the No. 7-ranked Brooks County Trojans. Both teams are 12-1, but it’s the Trojans that are stuck with a 3-hour, 45-minute bus ride to Atlanta, 200 miles outside their home in Quitman. The Trojans beat Bowdon 42-26 in the quarterfinals. They’re in the semifinals for the fifth time in school history and first time since 2008. The Lions edged Laney 35-33 last week and are in the semifinals for the fifth time since coach Mike Muschamp arrived in 2005 and first time since 2010. The all-time series between the Trojans and Lions is 1-1, with both games coming in the quarterfinals and both being played at Brooks County. The Trojans won in 2008 and Lovett won in 2010.

Before the playoffs started, I posted my predictions. I correctly picked three of the four quarterfinalists, missing only Benedictine. My pick for the state championship matchup – Lamar County vs. Lovett – is still intact as well.

Wow – that’s some pretty good prognostication skills you have there Mr. Krohn. I don’t know whether to feel slighted or complimented, so I will just chose the latter and carry on! Can’t wait till the trip to “B’Ville” Friday. GO CADETS!!

Nice picks! Double check your comment about Lovett’s history in state semi-final. Many more than three times – I think closer to 6 times in tn the last 9 years alone under Mike Muschamp.

Benedictine has actually reached the semis twice before, in 1978 and in 1957.

Following up on CDT/COL’s post, BC played at the highest level of Georgia high school football until 2004, which was AAAA in 1978 and AAA in 1957. Maybe Mr. Krohn’s only checking the AA records?

Lamar is excited to host the cadets again this year! I know it will be a great game. The weatherman predicts the possibility of rain, Lamar predicts a Thunder shakedown! GO TROJANS!

I’ve watched BC play four times this year, and cannot find an Achilles heal. They are superbly coached, and they seem to be focused, and possess that “will to win”, like no other high school team I’ve seen. The late great Wright Bazemore from Valdosta, would be hard pressed not to tip his hat at this team. And TEAM they are.
It’s the Perfect Storm. Go Cadets.

I have been saying all year it is not the size of the dog in the fight it is the fight in the dog and we have some little pit bulls running around in Barnesville GA. And they bit really hard. They are going to fight you until the clock hit 0 on the clock you better believe that so we will see safe travels Benedictine.

Trust me MS Rock, there may be some teams Lamar has played that laid down, and were intimidated by some”little pit bulls”, but I promise you this, this won’t be one of them. We eat pit bulls for appetizers in Savannah.
But thanks for wishing us safe travels. Hope you feel the same way AFTER the pit bulls get euathanized

One thing about we don’t die we multiple. Just get ready you will see I will feel the same way I feel right know when the clock strikes 0 I will be in my mind I told you so. If you don’t have no confidence in your own house anyone and anybody can come and take over your house. I don’t think so not in Barnesville. Like I said safe travels to and from the dog house.

Please tell me they still teach English, spelling, and grammar at Lamar High. If Aundrea Rock is any indication of classroom learning, then I shudder to think of what kids are learning in schools today.
Please Aundrea, stay home tonight——-forget football and devote some time to what is important—–like grammar, and spelling. Do yourself a big favor and go to the library, and not the football game.

Yes, they teach very good English, spelling and grammar. Are you an English teacher oledawg? Your name isn’t spelled correctly, if so. It should be Old Dog, right? Shut up and have fun for once! We all know plays on words and the ones I used are only for fun, IDIOT! By the way, I read books daily because I love the vicarious experiences a good book gives.

You call me an idiot, after using the word vicarious experiences a good book gives. VICARIOUS ????

Does Lamar have a class just for vocabulary? Perhaps you and Aundrea should go to the library together. If you want to really make Lamar High proud, then put the video games down, the cell phone on OFF, and take an extra study hall.
Oh, and by the way, Oledawg is precisely what you described—”a play on words”.

@oledawg – Take it easy. Aundrea has been posting on this blog from the beginning. You’re a little late getting here. And you could do a lot better of a job introducing yourself.
