Stanley, Queen lead West to 38-7 win in Georgia Junior Bowl

Jayson Stanley of Creekside caught two long touchdown passes and North Cobb quarterback Tyler Queen was 12-of-20 passing for 138 yards and had a hand in two touchdowns Tuesday to lead the West team to a 38-7 victory over the East in the AT&T Georgia Junior Bowl at Grady Stadium.

The game is a showcase for some of Georgia’s better high school juniors. Queen has committed to Auburn. Stanley is uncommitted, but his stock is rising.

Stanley had 41 receptions for 817 yards and 16 touchdowns for Creekside’s Class AAAAA championship team. He caught a 77-yard TD pass in the state championship game against Tucker.

In the all-star game, Stanley had a 47-yard TD reception from Queen and a 70-yard TD catch from Lorenzo Nunez of Harrison.

Washington County plays pretty good basketball, too

The fact probably got lost in Washington County’s undefeated regular season and run to the state title game in football, but they play pretty good basketball in Sandersville, too. So far the gymnasium has been a House of Pain for opponents this year.

The Washington County girls have been particularly good. The Golden Hawks have won the first nine games of the season, including the Colquitt County Invitational.

The Golden Hawks beat Madison County of Florida, Fitzgerald and Brunswick, which entered the tournament finale with an undefeated record.  Shon Kitchens scored 21 points and Nia Johnson added 13 in the 68-66 win over Brunswick in the final game.

Washington County is led by Kitchens, who averages 18 points, and Daknequa White, who averages 12.1 points. Johnson averages 10.6 to give the Hawks three players in double figures.

NW Whitfield’s Mack stars in North-South All-Star game in Columbus

Northwest Whitfield senior defensive lineman/linebacker Isaiah Mack had two sacks and five tackles for 23 yards in losses in leading the North team to a 27-7 victory over the South in the GACA Senior All-Star Game in Columbus on Monday.

The game, the oldest high school all-star game in the country, was dominated by the defenses. Mack, the defensive player of the year in Region 7-AAAA, has committed to Chattanooga.

The North got touchdown passes from Brooks Barden of Cartersville, Tanner Brumby of Pickens and Michael Gallup of Monroe Area.

Gallup, a receiver, threw a 56-yard TD pass to Arabia Mountain’s Greg Phillips for the game’s first score.

The North’s Thomas O’Leary of St. Pius kicked two field goals.

The South’s touchdown came in the second quarter on a 10-yard run by Esaias Chapman of Harris County.

Neither team had much success moving the ball. The game’s leading rusher was Jordan Ellis of Peachtree Ridge. The Virginia-committed running back ran for 42 yards on 16 …

Griffin rallies around QB Parks after game-day burglary

Jaquez Parks, the quarterback who led Griffin to its first football state championship in 35 years, called his senior season ‘’perfect,’’ although it nearly had a terrible ending.

Parks’ home was burglarized and ransacked on the day of the championship game at the Georgia Dome, where Parks had a record-setting performance – 338 yards passing and 216 yards rushing – in a 56-35 victory over Carrollton.

At the time, Parks sounded as if he’d lost a little faith in his fellow man.

“It just angered me,’’ Parks told WSB-TV. “I go out and do that for my city, played the best game of my life and they do that to me, and it angers me and makes me sad.’’

It turns out that his community was behind Parks more than he thought.  According to Parks and Griffin coach Steve DeVoursney, a local Walmart replaced some stolen electronics, including a television and an Xbox game. McDonald’s gave him a scholarship worth $5,000 to be applied toward tuition or other college expenses. Several people in …

All-class player of the year: QB Parks leads Griffin to historic season

Quarterback Jaquez Parks led Griffin’s history-making state championship team. (Jason Getz / AJC)

Quarterback Jaquez Parks led Griffin’s history-making state championship team. (Jason Getz / AJC)

Jaquez Parks is more likely to wind up in the Ivy League than the ACC or the SEC. He’s not a five-star recruit. He’s just a record-setting quarterback on Griffin’s history-making state championship team.

‘’It doesn’t bother me, but I’ve wondered about it,’’ Parks said of his status as a college recruit. ‘’It motivates me to show what I can and that I could be that (five-star) player even though they’re not looking at me like that player.”

Parks is The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s all-classification state player of the year, an honor that typically goes to a player headed for big-time college football. Recent winners include Alvin Kamara, now at Alabama and Robert Nkemdiche of Ole Miss.
