Once again it’s Carver vs. Buford

It seems like Buford and Carver Columbus have been getting in the way of each other for quite some time. So it makes sense that two of the state’s most consistently good programs should meet again, this time in the Class AAA quarterfinals.

Both teams won region championships: Buford in Region 6, Carver in Region 2. And since both were No. 1 seeds, it took a coin flip to determine the site. Buford won, so the game will be at Tom Riden Stadium in Buford on Friday night.

This will be the fifth meeting between the two schools. Carver won the first time 14-0 during the 2010 regular season and went on to reach the semifinal round, losing to Calhoun. Buford recovered to win the state championship.

Buford won the regular-season rematch 35-7 in 2011, then met the Tigers again in the semifinals and beat them 28-13 in Columbus. In 2012 Buford beat Carver 31-7 in the quarterfinal round in Columbus en route to winning the state championship.

The best players on the field will be Buford’s Korie Rogers and Thomas Wilson and Carver’s Jawon Pass.

In the other semifinal games:

St. Pius at Callaway: St. Pius has enjoyed its longest period of sustained excellence during the 13-year tenure of coach Paul Standard. The Lions have made the playoffs 11 of those years and are playing in the quarterfinals for the fifth time. The only thing missing is a state title.

Callaway has made the playoffs in eight of coach Michael Wiggins nine seasons. The Cavs are looking for their first trip to the Final Four. They came close in 2009 but lost on the road to Fitzgerald.

The best players on the field will be Dalton Wilson, Nick Ruffin and Daniel Crochet of St. Pius and Tez Parks, Eddie Culpepper and Terry Godwin of Callaway.

These two teams have never played.

Washington County at Blessed Trinity: In three seasons at Blessed Trinity, coach Tim McFarlin has transformed the program from one content to make the playoffs into one that’s capable of advancing in the playoffs. This year the Titans won the Region 6 championship and are in the quarterfinals for the first time.

Washington County is one of the state’s most successful programs. The Golden Hawks have won 14 region titles and three state championships. But this year’s region championship was the first since 2006, which is the last time the Hawks have reached the semifinal round.

The best players on the field will be A.J. Gray, Melvin Hill and Danyale Wicker of Washington County and Chad Manthey, Carter McManes and Connor Davis of Blessed Trinity.

These two teams have never played.

Central Carroll at Ringgold: Every dance needs a Cinderella? The AAA dance has a pair of them who just happen to be playing each other in the quarterfinals. That means one of these teams is guaranteed a place in the Final Four. This is as far as Ringgold has ever advanced in the playoffs, while Central Carroll hasn’t been here since winning the state championship in 1987.

The two clubs met on Sept. 13, with Central Carroll winning 19-15. The Lions were outgained in yardage 300-223, but were able to limit Ringgold quarterback Slade Dale to 199 yards passing and a season-low 53 yards rushing. Dale has run for six touchdowns and thrown for four others in the playoffs.

The best players on the field will be Dale, Christian Flott, Zach Morris and Ryan Emmer from Ringgold and Damarius Owensby, Curtis Davenport and Wesley Long for Central.

You are right ATL-Tiger, Don’t sleep on Carver. We have the ATH to beat Buford. We have the Best DB in AAA, Kiante Walton, Trust me Buford won’t throw to his side of the field.

We All know Buford plays Smash mouth Football, That’s what they do! But when they run the play-action, they won’t throw to Mr.Walton’s side or it will be a pick 6 like last year game. Just look at the hudl film.

Yo Bill – Nice that his pic was the ONLY points provided… 31 – 7 was the final..

I saw no tackling.. Not saying he can’t tackle, but when you lose by 24….. Well, actually that’s the spread I believe will happen again this Friday…

The prognosticators are calling for a 38 point wipe-out, which I do not believe will happen..

& You can bet Jess Simpson & Staff will NOT be sleeping on Carver-Columbus.. (that’s actually stoooopid to say) This is like a rivalry game in the playoffs… They know how to “Git er Dun” in the post season…

OK – I can see how what I said above can be misconstrued,

“Playing one of the best teams in the 1/4 finals will be a great test.. Pass & the coast is clear.. ”

What I am saying is if/when Buford passes the test of CC the coast is clear to the Dome…

Wolf……….The game was closer than the score. Carver was up 7-0 at halftime…..To be honest Carver was up at Halftime again in 2011 14-7, The wheels have just come off for Carver the last 2 years after halftime. And Trust me Mr.Walton will hit you!

Good deal Bill –

Not sure how CC could be up 14-7 at the half 2 years ago… Final score was 28-13… at your place in the playoffs after a total beatdown earlier in the season…

I take it you’ll be at the game Fri nite?? If you get there early, take a look around on the visitors side. As nice or nicer than most school’s home side of their stadiums.. & behind you are the rec league fields, not associated with the high school, for 1-8th grades…

Wishing you, & the Tigers faithful safe travels this Thanksgiving weekend!!

Wolf Dawg, I haven’t heard talk like that from the Buford Faithful since SPX scarred the puppy stuffing out the Wolves in the Dome last year. Keep on Dawgs we do play the game for a reason.

Wolfdawg….Ok I was off by a point shoot me…..My point was Carver was UP at halftime 13-7 in 2011. What did the REG season Match up had to do with the playoff game? We a 10th QB making his 2nd start at Buford high….But grew up doing the season. And played a great 4th RD game vs Buford. Trust me, the game won’t be a 38 pt blow-out. You don’t have to sell Buford stadium, been their many times .Great place.

One big advantage for SPX over Callaway is the kicking game. It looks like SPX can expect a 10-15 yard advantage in field position on kickoffs and about 40 yard advantage in the FG department.

No on associated with Buford is over looking Carver or the potential Semi Final game. Our coaches will NOT let that happen. Everyone at Buford knows how dangerous SPX can be and Calloway is an unknown who could potentially be hosting the game.

Lets just play this week’s game first and worry about next week’s opponent next week. Both games on the left side should be filled with smash mouth football to say the least. Carver played well last week but I wouldn’t say they’re “peaking” after nearly losing to a 4 seed. Mr. Jello Pudding man, Buford will throw the ball whenever they choose. They don’t scheme around individual players. They run their plays and you have to stop them.

@gridiron, you have some never talking about home cooking after the first game between Buford and Carver down there. I listened to the game on the radio and even your commentators couldn’t believe the personal fouls and hits out of bounds that weren’t called against Carver.
I can guarantee you the refs will call penalties against Buford in any stadium!
Although, thanks for giving your boys the OK to loose by blaming it on the refs.

@Ron – might I suggest you attend the BT vs. WACO game? It’s the on paper upset I am sure you would enjoy seeing, as well as you could get a glimpse of one of new football powers in the state and see the tremendous job Coach McFarlin has done in just his 3rd year of being at the helm of the program. And it will give you the ammo to retribute the WACKO boys on this board who seem to think their program is God’s gift to AAA Football. As for Carver vs. Buford, I think Carver will keep it close and with the weather being poor I see the Carver boys winning a close one, but if they win it will be NO upset. Buford is so full of themselves anymore I think the last thing we should do is support their gate receipts. They get enough $ from all those tuition paying athletes they are allowed to bring in from all over Gwinnett. Come to the BT game,we will take care of you and treat you to a great time at one of many tailgates prior to the game.

Thanks BTHomerDad I like how you phrase the WACKO boys from Waco. they seems to get upset when one goes against their team. I might say they are one dimensional in their thinking .At one time they were dominating in AA so many years ago, they are still living on that past. They run roughshod over inferior teams within their division each year with an exception being Thompson who had a terrible team this season. When they have to travel to the ATL area it’s a different story, last season St. Pius smashed them in the mouth and came out with a close victory. I look for Blessed Trinity to play smash mouth football and come out with a victory.
Tailgaiting ? I don’t think folks from WACKO know what that is. They know taking a little swig of moonshine before a home game means. Being in Roswell is really out of their elements, it’s more of the 60’s series of the Hillbillies being in Beverley Hills, California. You’ll notice they’ll be walking around in awe of the facilities at Blessed Trinity. I hope that Roswell law enforcement will be understanding as well as the fans of Blessed Trinity.

Washington County teams fear teams from the ATL area, it’s in their mindsets as well as the fans. It’s been imbedded forever and more recent losses in Henry County to Stockbridge High in 2011 in the bitter cold and 2012 to St. Pius. This year they face a talented team in Blessed Trinity which could be played in slight below freezing temps. Washington County dominates in the mid Georgia smaller communities between Macon to Augusta. If you want to be the best come to the ATL area and play the best. Waco is just like the Georgia Bull dawns, make noise but never win anything worth note.

Ron it’s funny you mention that because those same teams never come to middle Ga to play. Btw we beat Lovett up north and up way more points than you all of a sudden Buford wolves last year. We will win the day tomorrow. It will be a great Black Friday. One that you will remember.
