Playoff preview: Class AAAAAA quarterfinals

Colquitt County at Dacula

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Barron Field, Dacula

Records, rankings: Colquitt County is 10-2, the No. 2 seed from Region 1 and No. 3; Dacula is 8-4, the No. 2 seed from Region 8 and unranked.

Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.

Three things to know: 1. A victory would put Colquitt County in the semifinals for the fifth consecutive season. That would set a record in the highest classification. Colquitt jointly holds the record with Decatur (1950-53), Richmond Academy (1959-62), Northside of Atlanta (1954-57) and Valdosta (1968-71). Dacula has been in 11 quarterfinals and won in 1988, 1990 and 2005. 2. Colquitt County RB Sihiem King rushed for 179 yards and three touchdowns in a 52-6 victory over North Cobb in the second round. He didn’t play in the second half. That gives the junior 1,362 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns. Colquitt County has won 12 road playoff games since 1999. Only a handful of schools have won that many road playoff games in the past 25 years. 3. Dacula and Peachtree Ridge each had more than 400 yards in total offense in their second-round game, but Dacula didn’t allow a point in the second half and intercepted two fourth-down passes in its territory in the fourth quarter to preserve a 28-21 victory. Dacula rushed for 291 yards. Kelan Fraise has 116 of those.

Maxwell Ratings’ projection: Colquitt County by 12

Winner plays: Lowndes/Norcross winner

Lowndes at Norcross

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Norcross Stadium, Norcross

Records, rankings: Lowndes is 9-3, the No. 3 seed from Region 1 and unranked; Norcross is 10-2, the No. 1 seed from Region 7 and No. 5.

Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.

Three things to know: 1. Norcross and Lowndes were preseason Top 10 teams that overcame embarrassing early season home losses to make the quarterfinals. Norcross lost 55-0 to B.T. Washington of Miami, now the No. 1 team nationally in most polls, on Aug. 24. Lowndes lost 15-14 at home to Newton, a team that finished 5-6. 2. Lowndes rushed for 303 yards and held Lovejoy to 15 rushing yards in a 23-18 victory in the second round. Lovejoy got 155 of its 215 total yards on passes to Preston Williams, including an 80-yard touchdown. LB Tre Jackson, a preseason all-state player who has committed to Georgia Tech, leads a Lowndes defense that allows only 84.5 yards rushing per game. 3. Norcross also is known for its defense. DE Lorenzo Carter (top-rated prospect in Georgia) and LB Kevin Mouhon (committed to Tennessee) have more than 50 tackles for losses between them. Norcross held Brookwood’s Jesse Brown to 83 yards rushing last week after he had more than 200 in the first round. Norcross RB Josh Boyd rushed for 173, giving him 1,325 on the season.

Maxwell Ratings’ projection: Norcross by 15

Winner plays: Colquitt County/Dacula winner

McEachern at Collins Hill

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Fahring Field, Suwanee

Records, rankings: McEachern is 10-2, the No. 3 seed from Region 4 and unranked; Collins Hill is 11-1, the No. 2 seed from Region 7 and No. 7.

Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.

Three things to know: 1. Collins Hill, a co-champion in Region 7 but seeded No. 2, beat Alpharetta 48-0 in the second round. That is the largest margin of victory against a region champion in the first two rounds of the playoffs since the field went to 32 teams in 1996. Colquitt County’s 52-6 victory over North Cobb on Friday ranks second. The blowout boosted Collins Hill to the No. 1 ranking in the computer Maxwell Ratings. 2. Collins Hill has the leading passer and rusher among players left in the AAAAAA playoffs. QB Tyler Herman unofficially is 193-of-301 passing for 2,765 yards and 32 touchdowns. RB Tyler Henderson has rushed for 1,554 yards and 25 touchdowns. Henderson scored five touchdowns against Alpharetta, two on pass plays. 3. McEachern was ranked as high as No. 2 after a 7-0 start but is considered a Cinderella in the quarterfinals as a No. 3 seed that has played without its starting quarterback, Ty Clemons, in the playoffs. McEachern trailed 21-9 in the fourth quarter against Region 3 champion Hughes before winning 22-21 and advancing to the quarterfinals for the first time since 1999. The biggest play was freshman Bailey Hockman’s 22-yard TD pass to Malik Williams on fourth-and-10 to make it 21-16. Taj Griffin scored the winning touchdown on an 18-yard run with 2:20 to play.

Maxwell Ratings’ projection: Collins Hill by 16

Winner plays: North Gwinnett/Hillgrove winner

North Gwinnett at Hillgrove

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Cobb Energy Hillgrove Stadium, Powder Springs

Records, rankings: North Gwinnett is 11-1, the No. 3 seed from Region 7 and No. 1; Hillgrove is 11-1, the No. 2 seed from Region 4 and No. 8.

Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.

Three things to know: 1. Hillgrove stunned second-ranked Camden County in the second round for the second time in four seasons, winning 34-21. Hillgrove beat Camden 28-26 in the 2010 second round when Camden was ranked No. 1. Hillgrove is the only school that has won two road games at Camden since 2000. Hillgrove trailed 21-7 in the first quarter but didn’t allow another point. RB Richardre Bagley rushed for 141 yards on 27 carries. He has 1,514 yards rushing on the season. 2. North Gwinnett ended the season of the classification’s only unbeaten team, Archer, 34-32 on a 27-yard field by Michael D’Angola with seven seconds left in their second-round game. D’Angola’s 29-yarder was partially blocked on North Gwinnett’s previous drive, but North forced a three-and-out for another chance. C.J. Leggett rushed for 181 yards, giving him 1,208 in the season. QB Hayden Sphire was 17-of-29 passing for 219 yards, giving him 2,205 on the season. 3. North Gwinnett has reached its sixth quarterfinal since 2006, when Bob Sphire arrived as head coach. That is the most among AAAAAA schools in that time. Camden County, Colquitt County and Grayson have gone five times each. But the quarterfinals also have been a frequent stopping point for the Bulldogs, who are 1-4 in those games.

Maxwell Ratings’ projection: North Gwinnett by 9

Winner plays: McEachern/Collins Hill winner

Love the work done by Todd, Chip and the others at GHSF Daily- a publication worthy of the passion for HS ball in this state.

Minor correction on the Indian QB, though- should be Ty CLEMONS. Ty Griffin was a good ‘un for us…but he graduated last May and is now at GT.

@UncleIndian….Is this how you get you and your team pumped up by claiming on every blog that nobody respects you. I have seen 5 McEachern games and they look very good. I think a maxwell projection of 16 points might be excessive. This game is going to come down to executes the best. I do think CH has the best QB/RB combination in the state, but it takes 11 on each side of the ball.

I like Norcross against Lowndes. I am picking Dacula as my upset special. I think Hillgrove and NG will be a shoot out.

The hottest team at the moment is Collins Hill. After that loss to Norcross they have regrouped and been on fire. I don’t think McEachern can stay with them right now.
Colquitt should beat Dacula but I think the game will be close. Colquitt should be used to the travel but consecutive trips to N. Atlanta can cause some trouble and how well can the players focus after such an easy win over a top rated team like N. Cobb. I know the coaches will stress it but the players have to execute it.
I think Hillgrove will beat N. Gwinnett. Hillgrove’s only loss has been to a team with a similar style to N. Gwinnett but they did beat McEachern who has good athletes and plays fast paced. The should have a lot of confidence after beating Camden on the road. The last time N. Gwinnett played with fire and beat Mill Creek they followed up by getting burned by Collins Hill (I know they played Habersham Central in between but that is closer to an off date than a game).
Lowndes and Norcross will be a heavy weight fight between two tough defenses. Both teams can run, the difference in the game will be the QB of Norcross as the offense runs through him. If he can not make any mistakes they should beat Lowndes..I think Lowndes wins by a field goal.

@My2Cents- uncle might be a bit excessive with the exclamation points but you gotta admit…few are predicting it to be a close game and the next prediction I see of a Mac win will be the first.

In all honesty, I completely understand why the overwhelming consensus is that CH will thump us: we haven’t exactly played shut-down defense this season and our field general and most productive player on offense was injured against Hillgrove and hasn’t played in either playoff game. Meanwhile, CH has obliterated both of their playoff opponents by mercy rule. All of us know that upsets happen every year in the playoffs…so here’s to a huge one happening in Suwanee Friday night.

Colquitt will beat Dacula by 30+ and I wish I were wrong, Norcross always wins in the second half, Collins Hill I thought was the weakest of the 5 monsters in 7AAAAAA and I was wrong. Collins hill should roll. The best thing is three region seven team will advance with Colquitt and those are the best 4 teams. Should be a Gwinnett final game.Collins Hill and North will be a rematch.

@ My2Cents I hope you are right, because we don’t really want to see them again, but I’ll have to take CC and i am going to say IMO that it will be more than the spread given.
CH will probably beat Mac.. because of “CH has the best QB/RB combination in the state,” and the inexperience of Mac. qb
@ the truth I agree with you that HG will beat NG. Just don’t know that much about HG all but r#4 and them being 2 seed and IMO r#4 is not as strong a region as r#7. If I were a betting man I would take this spread,
Our Vikings are playing way better than we began the season, and inconsistency has been our nemesis ALL year. But 15 pt spread?? i know NC is pretty good, And if they do happen to beat us IMO they WILL NOT repeat the 6a championship.
BTW has anyone out there got info on if Norcross- Brookwood game last week is able to be streamed, and if so where? thanks

@my2cents you show me where anyone is giving us a chance to win and giving us some respect. just because we’re not one of those “power house” gwinnett teams, we’re being looked at like a lamb for sacrifice. we’ll see Friday

@OMacG I see why they say collins hill is good, I watched the CH/NG game on replay, they looked like a well oiled machine. but we’re pretty good also when the boys play their game, and I think they will. especially after coming together from suspensions from hillgrove game (there, is that better w/lower case letters, lol)

@Droc please don’t come to game, we don’t want anyone there who’s not thinking we’re gonna win and having a positive attitude!!

Will Norcross repeat as State Champions?? Can they join an Elite Group of Back-to-Back State Champions?? Camden County (2008-09), Lowndes (2004-05), Parkview (2000-02), Valdosta (1989-90) and Thomasville (1973-74) were the last schools to repeat as State Champs…..

Grayson, The 2011 State Champs, wanted to, but we all know how that turned out……

I cannot give my I.D. but have watched every Gwinnett region 7 and most region 8 games. Collins Hill,is hitting on all areas of the game. everyone can have a bad night but they are good all over the field. Norcross hasn’t hit all year like their talent is the best of all teams. They can run the table again. I believe Collins Hill is playing the best at this time. Number three is Colquitt and four is North Gwinnett, defense has fallen short at this time of the season.

NGHS 09

November 25th, 2013
7:51 pm

Collins Hill’s Tyler Herman is an outstanding QB and decision maker. He leads Gwinnett in almost every passing stat category, but I wonder if that would be true if NG’s Hayden Sphire didn’t get injured against CH in the first half. He missed two game after that and briefly played in the second half of the Milton game. In 9 and a half games, Sphire has 2,206 yds and 30 TD’s against 8 INTs. Herman and Sphire will both do very well at the next level.

NGHS 09

November 25th, 2013

Collins Hill can win the state title, but their 40-7 and 48-0 wins have come in the weakest part of the bracket. They haven’t had to play Lowndes, Archer, Hillgrove, Camden, Lovejoy etc. Should be an interesting game for sure.

People are sleeping on dacula, people are talking about how Collins hill could go all the way. Well Dacula was a touchdown away from beating them holding collins hill to only 20 points and holding peachtree ridge powerful offense to just 21 points with there star running back having a mediocre game. Dacula is the real deal even though the statistics don’t show it. They play as a team.

@gwinnett fan: Dacula played CH the second game of the season and they are a far different team than they were in week 2. No doubt Dacula is playing good ball but let’s compare apples to apples. CH has been a completely different team since the Norcross game. They had some key injuries that game that contributed to that ugly performance but that’s football. They are healthy and probably playing the best ball in the state right now. If CH doesn’t beat themselves by turning the ball over they are going to be a very tough out. They just beat 2 playoff teams 89-7! Don’t tell me they didn’t play anybody. They are playoff teams and one was a Region Champ. However, they better be ready for McEachern as they will be one of the most athletic teams CH has faced all year. That RB is no joke and the freshman QB is the coaches son. Probably knows the playbook better than the coach. I am pulling for Dacula and am hoping for an All Gwinnett Final 4. I know, I’m a homer.

My picks are still the same:
Colquitt over Dacula by 17 … Colquitt appears to be the hottest team still playing at the moment.
Norcross over Lowndes by 7… a defensive struggle, neither team over 21 points, fewest turnovers wins.
Collins Hill over McEachern by 10… Collins Hill also peaking at the right time, tough to beat them.
North Gwinnett over Hillgrove by 1… NG is battered, whoever has the ball last wins.

Rob, do they actually enforce those laws about pillaging and plundering? I done told you on Holcomb’s thread that Thor would be with us. Nobody, not none of us I swear, can control Thor. He was with us at The Land of the Eastern Cow Eating Tribe, and again last week at the newly named a Eleven Oaks stadium (Thor burnt one of them oaks so’s we could tailgate and cook rabbits and road kill we found coming up from Lowndes County.). Thor’s bad, real bad. Ask Rufus De Mann. And like I said, he’ll be with us Friday.

We’re coming to Norcross and Thor will be with us. Spread the word. Warn the wimmen and chillens. Thor’s coming with us!

Thor seems to have gone 100% Hollywood– and some people up here think he might have gone queer (not that there is anything wrong with that). If you are talking about your Uncle Thor, and not the movie guy, this is a non-issue and please accept my apologies for jumping to conclusions.

When I said 11 Oaks was newly re-named, I thought you knew I was referring to you. Oh, you’ll have to ask Thor yourself about what his personal preferences are. I always heard he’d roast and burn a man quick as he’d burn a woman. I tell you he’s real mean. Alec Baldwin wants to use him in some commercials. He likes dodge rock better than football I heard! So a 1/4 of the last 8 are from down south… Yea 3/8 of the teams in the final 8 are from region 7 I’ll give ya’ll that, but how many 6a teams in 30 miles from r7?

AVF and Rob are riots. I’m glad the Cats were fortunate enough to avoid Thor the past four years. I think he was responsible for 2009’s debacle, though!

I’m surprised all favorites are better than 10 points over their opponents but one, and that one (NG) is favored by 9. As I said else where the overall speed of Lowndes gives them a 10-14 edge.. Colquitt will put a running clock on Dacula. CH will prevail by a touchdown and North Gwinnett will win by double digits.

@ Gwinnett fan…..Dacula is my dark horse pick, but I think you need to get your facts straight. Dacula was not a TD away from beating CH. They were a TD and a 2pt. conversion from tying the game (a big difference).

@NGHS 09…..I agree that CH appears to have had an easier draw in the play-offs, but is that because they are clicking on all cylinders or because those other teams were that bad? It is hard to tell because other then Norcross, CH has pretty much had it’s way with all the region 7 teams as well. I think this weeks game against McEachern will determine whether or not CH is for real.

I know Norcross hasn’t been pretty or flashy this year, but anybody who thinks they are going to run all over them is mistaken. Do I think they can be had? Only because the offense hasn’t shown any real consistency. If there Offense takes care of the football, I think they get to the dome.

I’m glad Hillgrove & NG are not on TV. With all that passing it could be a 5 hour ordeal. I think this comes down to last possession & Turn overs.

I also wish every player on the field a Happy & Safe Holiday and football game.

The beauty of Sport is that the game is played on the field, not in the blogs. We don’t lead in any category against any team left in the playoffs, but we are still here. Safe travels.
