Playoff preview: Class AAAAA quarterfinals

Creekside at North Paulding

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, The Den, Dallas

Records, rankings: Creekside is 12-0, the No. 1 seed from Region 4 and No. 4; North Paulding is 11-1, the No. 1 seed from Region 5 and No. 8.

Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.

Three things to know: 1. Creekside was tied with Harris County 7-7 early in the second quarter but scored 21 points over the next 15 minutes to pull away in a 42-21 second-round victory. Jayson Stanley caught touchdown passes of 28 and 45 yards from Felix Harper, and Dexter Knox had touchdowns rushing and receiving. Creekside is 12-0 for the fourth time in the program’s 24-year history. 2. North Paulding QB Chase Noonan threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to Mac Seagle on the first play of the game and hit Seagle for a 67-yard TD four minutes later in a 35-7 second-round victory against Stephenson. Brandon Townsend returned two first-quarter interceptions for touchdowns as the Wolfpack led 28-0 less than eight minutes into the game. Noonan passed for 2,125 yards in the regular season and had 319 against Stephenson. 3. Creekview is in the quarterfinals for the first time since 2006 and fourth time overall. The Seminoles were 1-2 in the quarters in their previous three appearances. North Paulding, which opened in 2008, is in the quarterfinals for the first time. The Wolfpack lost to Tucker in the second round last year in its only previous playoff appearance.

Maxwell Ratings’ projection: Creekside by 6

Winner plays: Warner Robins/Kell winner

Warner Robins at Kell

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, C.J. Kell Stadium, Marietta

Records, rankings: Warner Robins is 11-1, the No. 1 seed from Region 2 and No. 6; Kell is 12-0, the No. 1 seed from Region 7 and No. 2.

Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.

Three things to know: 1. Warner Robins has two 1,000-yard rushers in Danny Hite Jr. (1,150 yards, 187 carries, 13 touchdowns) and Jacquan Burns (1,028, 153, four). QB Caden Johnston has passed for 1,330 yards and 14 touchdowns and rushed for 319 yards and six scores. The Demons are averaging 364.7 yards of total offense but were outgained 416-326 in a 45-28 victory over Richmond Hill in the second round. 2. Kell sophomore Evan Carnes scored on a 14-yard reception and a 20-yard interception return in the third quarter as the Longhorns pulled away from Mays for a 26-15 second-round victory. Jay Moxey, who leads the Longhorns in rushing with 1,269 yards (unofficially), ran for 146 yards on 26 carries against Mays. 3. Warner Robins, which won state titles in 1976, 1981, 1988 and 2004, is in the quarterfinals for the second time in three seasons. A victory this week would give the Demons 12 wins for the first time since the 2004 title team went 14-0-1. Kell, which opened in 2003, is in the quarterfinals for the second time in four years and seeks its first 13-win season.

Maxwell Ratings’ projection: Kell by 5

Winner plays: Creekside/North Paulding winner

Ware County at Tucker

When, where: 8 p.m. Friday, Hallford Stadium, Clarkston

Records, rankings: Ware County is 11-1, the No. 1 seed from Region 3 and No. 5; Tucker is 12-0, the No. 1 seed from Region 6 and No. 1.

Last meeting: Tucker won 42-3 in the 2010 Class AAAA quarterfinals.

Three things to know: 1. Sophomores Dedrick Mills and Jaquez Bolds form a dangerous backfield tandem for Ware County. Both had more than 100 yards rushing as the Gators routed Northside of Warner Robins 35-7 in the second round. Mills scored three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving). Ware County also eliminated Northside in 2012. 2. Tucker had the closest second-round game of any of the quarterfinalists, holding on for a 16-13 victory that wasn’t secure until East Paulding fumbled at the Tucker 7-yard line in the closing seconds. The Tigers are the leading rushing team in DeKalb County, averaging 238 yards per game, but have no player averaging more than 50. 3. Ware County is in the quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive a season, a streak that began in 2010 when it lost to the Tigers. Tucker is in the quarterfinals for the fourth straight season and the 10th time since 2000. The Tigers won state championships in 2008 and 2011.

Maxwell Ratings’ projection: Tucker by 2

Winner plays: Mundy’s Mill/Gainesville winner

Mundy’s Mill at Gainesville

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, City Park Stadium/Bobby Gruhn Field, Gainesville

Records, rankings: Mundy’s Mill is 8-4, the No. 2 seed from Region 4 and unranked; Gainesville is 11-1, the No. 1 seed from Region 8 and No. 3.

Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.

Three things to know: 1. Mundy’s Mill RB Rodney Smith has rushed for 613 yards and eight touchdowns in the Tigers’ two playoff games, including 266 yards and four TDs in a 41-35 second-round victory over Lee County. Smith, who suffered a torn ACL last season, ran for 1,361 yards during the regular season. 2. Gainesville QB Deshaun Watson passed for 423 yards in a 51-12 victory over South Paulding in the second round to increase his season total to 3,233 yards. Watson, the state’s all-time leader in career passing yards, has thrown for 12,535 yards in four seasons, almost 3,500 yards more than previous record-holder Zach Stanford of Metter. 3. Gainesville, the defending state champion, is 19-4 in home playoff games since 2001, and a victory this week would put the Red Elephants in the semifinals for the third consecutive season. Mundy’s Mill, an 11-year-old program in Clayton County, had never won a playoff game before beating Houston County and Lee County in the first two rounds this year.

Maxwell Ratings’ projection: Gainesville by 22

Winner plays: Ware County/Tucker winner

@JAB….oh ooops sorry his team is out. Then again i know he will read this….wow SHS what a vanilla offense! after you realized you dont dare throw again..#25 off tackle left..#25 off tackle right…and repeat…and tell your D1 corners to not peek in the backfield when they get to college. Looking forward to Fri and creekside. My friend was at the south game last week said Creek is a solid team. Cant wait!!!

Sportsnut, props to your wildcats, earlier exit than you wanted, but in shame in losing to lowndes.

What can you tell us about MM? #1 looks big and fast, does he play both ways? Looks like a decent passing team also with a mobile qb.

I think their defense may be suspect…

@JFOTTT == Hard to tell about them. We played them the first game and it was no contest. This has become their way. Lose early and come on late. They would have been in it last year if not for Rodney getting hurt. He is a very talented back. He runs with purpose. Their passing game is decent also. Rodricus, their qb is an athlete. He came run and throw. They may be in over their heads but you never know what will happen. They will come to play.

I was at the Mundy’s Mill/Lee Co game and here is my take on Mundy’s Mill. Their offensive line has good size across the front and does a good job run and pass blocking. Their running back got a lot of yards after first contact and would drag a pile if not wrapped up. If he gets the corner, watch out, he is fast and if your DB’s take a bad angle he will add to his yard total in big chunks. They have a least one tall receiver that was able to out jump the DB’s and make the catch. Their QB throws a good ball and is very mobile when needed. Gainesville will score on their defense but if they don’t keep Mundy’s Mill’s offense off the field it will be a much closer game than the Maxwell rating anticipates and may come down to who gets the most stops and who benefits from unforced errors.

JAB came on here after the game and in one sentence says he has all the respect for North, then proceeds to tell us how the Jags shut down North after the first quarter, and how Dallas rivers had his best game going up and sown the field. DOME ON MAN. JAB has been on here for years trash talking and talking how no one else can play or understand Reg6 or Jags football. You can’t blame folks for giving it back to him when he’s proven dead wrong.

Stephenson vaulted defense gave up over 150 yards and 14 points in the first 5 minutes of the game. The team gave up 19 more points in the first 8 min and 26 more points over their average. Te Stephenson defense gave up 300+yards passing and 175+ yards rushing. They did slow the bleeding down from a gush to a constant flow but no they didn’t ever shut that offense down. Rivers best game……not hardly. He had 1 run over 12 yards I think and even in that one 30+ yard run he was caught from behind. Conversely he North WR, constantly got past the CBs even behind the Jags talented Safety’s. I promised when I came on that Norths speed would be surprising to Stephenson and sure it was proved on that first pass play with the North receiver running away from the safety. I also promised this would come down to the trenches and in particular the Stephenson D line against the North O line. I said that if North could continue its stellar play and give the qb time to pas that it could be a runaway or if the Jags could stuff them it would be a fought night for North. nearly 500 yards of offense answers that.

Creekside noles, been watching film. Everybody knows about the twins. But #5 looks impressive. He likes to come up and hit. Both running backs , #12 and #44 look like they’re tough to bring down. They both look short and stout, the kind that are hard to tackle. I also think you guys have more of a passing attack than did Stephenson.

Speed on defense, maybe small across the front. Looks like a great team. Looks like you guys started kind of slow in both playoff games, but finished strong.

Everyone knows what Tucker is capable of. You don’t become #1 for just showing up. Ware County is a very balanced team that flies to the ball on defense and their running attack has gotten stronger as the season has progressed. If Ware County can hang close till the 4th quarter they will have a shot. Should be a good game. Just hope we don’t look ahead and think about a rematch with Gainesville. But when you’re playing the #1 team in the state in their neck of the woods (wait that’s a South Ga saying) I should have said,”on their home turf,” it shouldn’t be hard to get up for this game.

I have to agree with Tiger 4 Life. I love the Pack and have watched and supported them all year since the first game. But those of us who are in the stands rooting for the Pack, let’s keep our mouths shut and let the players do the talking on the field. We played a great game aganst SHS and it will be obvious to anybody who can read a box score how the game went. There is no need to continue to talk about that game, it is over, we need to move on and get ready for Creekside. And those who are letting themselves get sucked into the trash talk and beat their chests like they are unbeatable while ripping the team we are playing, get a life and use your energy and your comments to support our players. There are always going to fans who have no class and fans who are ignorant and would argue with a STOP sign and I don’t know about you but I would rather the team and our fans be remembered for how played and conducted ourselves instead of how it sounds like everybody feels about JAB judging by the comments made. I am assuming every one who is making comments are adults and are supporters or parents of the players so let’s let the boys on the field play the game. As we can see from last week, most of the time the big talkers end up eating their words because they talk too much and make predictions that don’t happen or worse than that those who aren’t playing on the field make comments that can give the opposing team bulletin board material that backfires. Be humble and show some class and stop the trash talk.

Nphspack yes those players are solid along with #30 our defensive end. I saw Stephenson play a couple times this year on GPB and we do pass a bit more than they do. However, as you saw we can also run the ball effectively. This late in the season we can’t take anyone for granted.

@ I’m just saying…

IF you were watching the same game then you KNOW that EAST started DEEP in it’s own end EVERY drive. EAST drove the length of the field and was inside the TUCKER red zone 3 or 4 times (?) only to miss 2 critical Field Goals that would have been the difference ion this game. TUCKER played GREAT “D” when it had to forcing EAST to try the FG’s. This had been EAST strong point up to this game but the kicker unfortunately had a bad night. Go back and read some of my post early last week, and I said I thought this game would be close and come down to the kicking game.

TUCKER started from MID-FIELD, even on the EAST side on virtually EVERY DRIVE due to EAST trying onside kicks and short kicking…No I don’t know why…even with that kind of field position TUCKER only put up 16 points and we both know the game was STILL ON THE LINE at the 17 second mark.

Don’t get me wrong…GREAT game! Nothing but praise for BOTH teams…those kids played their hearts out! MY point in the earlier post was TUCKER won, NOW finish the deal! I do not think 16 points will beat WARE COUNTY!!! GOOD LUCK!

OK…if that’s how you want to believe the game played out…but EAST was starting DEEP in it’s own end EVERY drive and breaking off runs of…4…5…6… yards UP THE MIDDLE…ALL NIGHT!

This game was an old fashion smash mouth football game and the low score shows it. In this age of wide open offense’s and teams hanging 50+ on folks week in and week out we sometimes tend to forget the “D” and this time BOTH teams “D” showed up and put on a show! This time 50+ wasn’t needed…16 pts did it. GOOD LUCK! this week!

Winning by any means nescessary it wasnt Tucker’s best moment but we do what we have to do to acheive the only outcome that really matters the W. Good points Cannon. East drove inside the 30 six times. Tucker drove (if you call 20 to 30 yards a drive) inside the 30 twice. I don’t count a 50y TD run or a kick return to the 20 a drive. East had one 3 and out and Tucker had multiple 3 and outs. Example Tuckers 1st FG was a return to the 20 and then 3 and out forced to kick a FG. East did control the game it all phases but special teams and that why we lost (I say we lost because IMO you didn’t beat us we did).

Sportsnut, thanks for the update on MM. Been watching some film on them and your analysis is spot on. They remind me of Harris co last year, started 0-4 and then caught fire with the help of a big fast tailback.

Swag: are you a MM fan? Your insights were helpful

Don’t think MM is ready for the tempo of the GHS offense. If you watch, most defenses are still trying to get in position or stance when we snap the ball.

Our defense is undersized but we have had good success against big fast running backs when we can swarm to the ball. I don’t think the MM oline can keep our speedy linebackers off that big #1.

It kills me that people aren’t humble enough to admit we they lose. That will be the first step to being great when you can look into the mirror and admit you weren’t good enough to win. Keep thinking we should’ve won and you will be in the same situation next year, coming up a little short. If you believe you played perfect then what is there to work on this off season?

Tucker was up on NSWR 28-7 going into the half of the Simi’s in 2007 and we loss 31-28, we didn’t look at it as we gave that game away and NSWR didn’t beat us. We took the approach as to why we didn’t finish the drill, and the answer was fatigue. NSWR had better conditioning and it showed in the second half. So during the off season we knew what needed to be worked on in order to make it to the next level.

Keep taking the same approach and you will continue to get the same results, moral victories don’t mean a thing in the game of football.

TuckerDAD

November 26th, 2013

@ Tucker fans, Stop trying to fit a square peg into a round hole with these East Paulding fans. We yield to them the “moral victory”. We gave them credit for playing a tough, hard, and inspired game. But here’s something that EP needs to learn from a proven champion…. At this point in the season playing for “moral victories” is for losers! The one thing that Tucker can hang our hats on is that our team pull out a victory against a team that WE allowed to hang with us deep into the fourth quarter.

Champions find ways to win games that they played poorly enough to lose, contenders find excuses as to why they lost and call them “moral victories”.

SO I say this to you EP fans, take this “moral victory and use it as fuel to build your program to the heights of a Tucker and one day you will have other teams playing you for the “moral victory”.

@Cannon Rules, We can indeed continue to score only 16 points and win if our defense only gives up less than that! “It doesn’t matter by how much but just by enough”!

EP guys, Unfortunately I agree, going to have to move on. Very painful way to lose and sadly yes it will need serve as character building and fuel for the program over the long haul. They may have just turned the corner with their showing against Tucker. Many saw 6-7 years starting to go in a negative decline, however it would seem the past 4-5 games would indicate the ability to reload and continue to compete at a high level. Like I said, it’s another threshold of knowing they belong and can compete with the storied programs in this classification. Great way to finish the season Raiders.
