Coin flip determines home field in quarterfinal showdown between No. 1 and No. 2

By David Purdum / For the AJC

Sandy Creek and Griffin rolled to easy wins Friday, setting up a quarterfinal showdown between the top-two-ranked teams in the AAAA. No. 1 and defending champion Sandy Creek hammered Chestatee, 55-7, behind three Eric Swinney touchdowns. No. 2 Griffin eliminated Statesboro, 42-7, to advance to the third round for the first time since 2009. Griffin running back Devontae Freeman ran for two touchdowns and blocked a punt resulting in a score. Griffin has won two of three playoff meetings with Sandy Creek all-time.

Sandy Creek won the coin flip and will host Griffin.

Region 5 represented: Three of the remaining eight teams in the AAAA bracket are out of Region 5, including the only remaining fourth seed in Alexander. The Cougars knocked off Lanier, 42-28, to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time in school history. Sandy Creek and Carrollton are the two other remaining Region 5 teams.

Defense: Stockbridge, Marist and Burke County each posted shut outs to advance to the quarterfinals. Stockbridge blanked Westover, 35-0, to advance to face Carrollton. The Tigers won a coin flip and will host the Trojans. … Marist shut out Gilmer, 38-0, to reach the quarterfinals for the second straight season. … Burke County topped Mary Persons, 20-0, and will take on Marist in the next round. The Bears won a coin flip and will host the War Eagles.

Kicking game: Carrollton prevailed at Monroe Area, 44-27, in a game that featured more than 900 yards of offense. The difference may have been field position. Carrollton’s average starting field position was its 35. Monroe Area’s average starting position was its own 19. All seven of Carrollton kicker Tyler Newsome’s kickoffs resulted in touchbacks. Newsome is committed to Notre Dame.

Moving on: Wayne County advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time since 1993 with a 20-17 win over Veterans. Wayne County receiver Krenwick Sanders, who caught six touchdown passes last week, had a 94-yard kickoff return. The Yellow Jackets will host Alexander.

Has there been a coin toss for the Carrollton Game? Does Stockbridge have a suitable stadium if they win?

HEADS UP NOTICE TO ALL CARROLLTON FANS. This is a friendly reminder from a die hard Griffin Bears ex-player and current alumnus and booster. Be prepared for the WORSE PA announcer in all high school football. The jerk is a total LOSER who is an EMBARRASSMENT to our fine region. I am telling you all this as a past visitor to your beautiful palace in Carrollton. I went to the SC Game there and was treated with nothing but respect by all the Trojan fans I encountered. It is a CRYING SHAME a quality team and great fans such as the Trojans family has to endure such garbage as you will encounter there. I advise wearing good headphones to drown out that crappy smack talking wanna-be in the announcer’s booth. Good luck and safe travels.

Bear Backer-we have encountered cheerleaders in the press box before-a total lack of class! What can you tell us about the Stockbridge facilities? Do they have adequate seating for the visitors? Seems like the school would care more for their image than to allow what you describe in the press box.

Stockbridge announcer thinks he is doing play-by-play — he talks during the play, while kicks are in the air, etc. The facilities are fine — metal bleachers on both sides, but enough room for a good visitor crowd. Grass field and adequate lighting (not great lighting).

As for Burke County, looking forward to seeing the Gator in person. Hope Marist can hold him under 300 yards rushing.

@Just a Fan – The facilities are meh at best….typical cookie-cutter type facilities. Visiting fans are “herded” to the left from the main entrance totally surrounded by metal fencing the whole way to the bleachers. Bleachers are kinda low and best visibility is up top. Track surrounds field. The School is kinda hard to get to travel wise in that part of Henry county due to massive traffic in Stockbridge on Fridays, and this being BLACK-Friday, I feel for ya for sure. I advise arriving early and trying to get a parking space by the main entrance and tail-gating some. Otherwise you will have a long walk ahead of you due to having to park down by the elem/middle school. Good Luck and safe travels to the Trojan Fans headed to Henry County.

I agree with Bear_Backer about Stockbridge’s PA announcer – the guy is a crass, obnoxious jerk. He’s a homer’s homer. I’ve not heard anything quite like him at a high school game.

@ Old Bear ….. Griffin did defeat Stockbridge in the regular season but now all playoff teams face a one and done scenario. Who knows how the ball will bounce going forward. At any rate, I am proud to be a Stockbridge Tiger. Good luck to all quarter final teams.

I never said the Stockbridge PA guy was going to affect the score of a game. He can, does, detract from the fan’s overall experience of the trip, though. Fans don’t travel to games to be taunted by the guy with a microphone. That’s all I’m going to say about the subject going forward.

Again, I wish good fortune to all the teams that have made it this far. They’ve proven that they are among the state’s best. I’ve said it before – just because these games will have a team that wins and a team that doesn’t, there aren’t any losers among them.

The Griffin versus Sandy Creek Game could be the best game of the year. The Bears are loaded and so is Sandy Creek. Griffin totally dominated the only two decent teams they played in Stockbridge and Statesboro. Griffin has never been challenged all year and their boys have never had to play an entire game. It will be great fun to see how it shakes out.
