AA blog: Here’s what we learned Friday

Here’s what we learned Friday in Class AA:

  • The No. 5-ranked Calhoun Yellow Jackets’ hopes of reaching the state finals for a sixth consecutive season are still in tact after they hosted and edged the No. 3-ranked Greater Atlanta Christian Spartans, 31-30. The Spartans missed what would have been a game-winning 26-yard field goal as time expired. The Yellow Jackets (11-1) will now play the No. 6-ranked Benedictine Cadets (12-0), one of two remaining teams with an undefeated record. The Cadets have yet to be challenged thus far in the playoffs, outscoring their opponents 113-19 in the first two rounds, including a 52-7 second-round win over Fitzgerald.
  • Two No. 1 seeds were eliminated Friday. The previously undefeated and No. 4-ranked Washington-Wilkes Tigers were absolutely stunned by the  unranked Bowdon Red Devils, a No. 2 seed from Region 5. It was only last season that the Tigers defeated the Red Devils, 66-28, in the first round. The Red Devils (11-1) ended the Tigers’ 11-game, season-long win streak and will travel to play the No. 7-ranked Brooks County Trojans (11-1), who are averaging nearly 55 points through the first two rounds and defeated Bleckley County, 55-28, in the second round.
  • The other No. 1 seed to fall was the No. 10-ranked Heard County Braves. The No. 8-ranked Jefferson Dragons edged them in a high-scoring contest, 61-57. Though the Dragons have dealt with injuries this season and are a two-loss team, their hopes of repeating as state champions are still alive – at least for this week. Now they must travel to play the state’s No. 1-ranked team, the 12-0 Lamar County Trojans.

So, exactly what kind of pressbox WOULD you like to report from? One with attending Hooter’s girls? And reclining chairs?

The announcer at Washington Wilkes was unpleasant. His comment after the Bowdon kicker was roughed that he needed an “oscar” was inappropriate. Also with all the “canned” music that they piped in, there was no need for the bands to play.

I hope we don’t have to go back and listen to that annoyance any more.

WW, you got your Arses handed to you. Admit it. Bowdon was undersized, but had more heart and was much better coached. Refs cost Bowdon another score or 2.

Anyone from Bowdon is criticizing another team’s PA announcer is laughable at best! Talk about the drunk as a skunk pot calling the homer kettle black. I’m pretty sure the bowdon announcer is named Otis, and Barney gives him a ride from the jail to the stadium every home game!

I will agree with BRD, though, that canned music has absolutely NO place in high school football from the moment the bands enter the stadium!!

Yes, Bowdon. We got our arses handed to us. Just like you did last year. The better team Friday night won. We didn’t play well and picked a bad week to have a bad game. Doesn’t mean our kids don’t have heart. They have played hard all year. We will be back next year. Maybe we can square off again. Our 60 or so returners would love to.

@Max Sizemore – I only ask for an unobstructed view in a climate-controlled seating area.
