Only one No. 1 seed makes AAAAAA quarterfinals

The state playoffs are only two rounds old, but seven No. 1 seeds are gone in Class AAAAAA.

The lone survivor is Norcross, a 32-9 winner over Brookwood. Norcross, the defending state champion, is the top seed from Region 7, which also sent Collins Hill and North Gwinnett to the quarterfinals.

Region champions eliminated on Friday were Camden County (Region 1), Lovejoy (2), Hughes (3), North Cobb (4), Alpharetta (6) and Archer (8).

Other things learned in the highest class:

- In the game of the night, No. 1-ranked (but No. 3-seeded) North Gwinnett ended the season of the classification’s only unbeaten team, Archer, 34-32 on a 27-yard field by Michael D’Angola with 7 seconds left. D’Angola’s 29-yarder was partially blocked on North Gwinnett’s previous drive.

- Hillgrove stunned second-ranked Camden County for the second time in four seasons, winning 34-21. Hillgrove beat Camden 28-26 in the 2010 second round when Camden was ranked No. 1. Though 360 miles away, Hillgrove is the only school with two road wins at Camden since 2000.

- Collins Hill, a co-region champion in Region 7 but seeded No. 2, beat Alpharetta 48-0. That is the largest margin of victory against a region champion in the first two rounds of the playoffs since the field went to 32 teams in 1996. Colquitt County’s 52-6 victory over North Cobb on Friday ranks second.

- In beating North Cobb, Colquitt County won its 12th road playoff game since 2009. Colquitt is 12-3 in road playoff games under coach Rush Propst and 11-0 on the road in the first three rounds. No other school has won that many road playoff games in any five-year stretch.

- Cinderella teams are Dacula, McEachern and Lowndes. Dacula, a 28-21 winner over Peachtree Ridge, was 1-9 last season and a lightly regarded No. 2 seed out of Region 8. McEachern, a 22-21 winner over Hughes, was written off after losing its start quarterback, Ty Clemons, to injury two weeks ago. Lowndes, a 23-18 winner over Lovejoy, started the season with an embarrassing home loss to Newton but persevered to make its first quarterfinal since 2010.

North Gwinnett at Hillgrove

The North Gwinnett vs Archer game was absolutely amazing. Great playing for both teams. Archer’s QB has some serious talent. It was a hard fought win for NG. All road games to the ship. Who ever said it was going to be easy? Great games this Friday despite the weather. Phenomenal football all around!

I still can’t believe it. A visiting team from 200 miles away had more fans than the home team. Heck our band had more people than Lovejoy had fans. Disgraceful! I know Sportsnut was embarrassed!
Lovejoy had one first down the whole freaking first half and that was on a penalty. A Penalty! The whole first half. Then, they had only one first down the whole 3rd quarter. Three quarters of football and Lovejoy had two first downs! One thing for sure, Lovejoy won’t be bridesmaids this year. Where are you Sportsnut? I looked for you all night with my Colquitt County binoculars. You said we didn’t have a chance, not even a small chance. Yes I’m bragging. I’m tooting our horn. But when we travel as far as we did, have more fans than you did, and out play the bridesmaids of all bridesmaids like we did, we’ve got a right to brag.
But next week everything changes. We go to Norcross. Lowndes has never been to Norcross. I’ve never been to Norcross! (I’ve been every where Lowndes has ever been.). They are good. They are magnificent. They are the cream of the crop. We’s just some small country boys trying our bestest. But we’s going to Norcross, and we’s some proud Vikings! Hear that? We’s some proud Vikings!

@AVIKINGFAN I really wanted Lowndes to beat Norcross. I really did but after your comment. You know as well as I do. Two personal fouls at the end of the game was all the difference. Each one of your drive burn a quarter off the clock good stragedy . How do you stop a fast scoring offense. By keeping them on the sideline. After your comment I’ll just say this save your money don’t go to Norcross next week because that’s going to be a very quite long ride home. Go Norcross!!!!! And I don’t like anything about Norcross. There fans act like they are entitled. Kinda like you sound right now

I’ve never really been a fan of Gwinnett County’s football programs even though I respect their achievements, but I really dislike Region 1’s arrogance. I’m glad Camden is out (even though they’re relatively new to Region 1), and I hope Lowndes and Colquitt Counties join them on the outside looking in this weekend. To hear their fans you’d think they invented the game.

Love the Viking Band – best in state

Love the tradition of Lowndes Football

Unfortunately I remember the Lowndes – Grayson game. Win or lose play with class. Should be a great game. Classic North vs South Georgia.

Norcross is a mystery, they just hang around and only play in the second half. They will play colquitt for the dome, Dacula not so good, but get all the praise coach Jones your coach of the year. North will play Collin Hill for a rematch. Colquitt looks the strongest of the group but just can’t beat a Gwinnett triple dose. Region7 is proving their worth, if only Mill Creek was in another region it would be all gwinnett. They may finish in the top 10 and not play. They hammered Dacula.

”Lovejoy had one first down the whole freaking first half and that was on a penalty. A Penalty!”

Actually, the 80-yard TD pass counts as a first down in high school statistics. But I hear your point.

AVikingFan,

Lovejoy fans shouldn’t feel bad about not showing up for the football game. Maybe they don’t care about the stupid sport of football. Also, why should the football team expect random people from the school to pay and attend games if they’re doing well. I don’t remember the last time the football team or its family members attended concert band concerts and they’ve won awards. I don’t remember them showing up for debate or cheerleading competitions. Everything is geared around the football team. You and other over the top fans need to get over yourself about the importance of football in society. It means almost nothing in the grand scheme of things.

First off, I’m left-handed. Second, since when is football supposed to be a right-wing sport? I know you get a little upset when the supremacy and grand importance of high school football is challenged. I’m sorry for you that the truth hurts. I guess you really are that much of a simpleton that you assume the left in my screen name refers to left-wing. Sounds like you are the one who needs to read and make sure it is at a much higher level. Football magazines and five servings of Sportscenter may actually decrease your intelligence.

@Leftfield – those were some of the most USELESS words ever posted on a FOOTBALL blog…there are no band concert blogs or cheerleading blogs, but football, (much like those who work and pay taxes in this country) provides the economic engine that allows other revenue sapping sports to exist. Take away football and a LOT of athletic programs would cease to exist at the next level. Arts have their place, but don’t get it twisted – FOOTBALL is where the economic rubber meets the road. I could take this to a whole different level deconstructing your argument, YOUR opinion; but I am here to talk FOOTBALL, not it’s relevancy in society…..

@Jimb….Norcross doesn’t just hang around. Their offense isn’t great this year, but their Defense is. They beat opposing offenses into submission and then the mistakes start happening and boom by the end of the game it looks like a blow out. Dacula not good….are you crazy. I think anybody who gets them from here on out is going to have their hands full. When Dacula played CH early in the year they gave them fits.

BulldogsBite,

Your words are the ones that are completely useless. You’re exactly right. It’s pretty sad that AJC has devoted space to knuckleheads like yourself to brag about how great their high school football team is. Some in here aren’t even still in high school, which is pretty sad in itself. I guess your justification for society makes sense, if something sells it must be good. I guess sex shops, strip clubs, and brothels need to all be legal and opened on every corner. By the way, the sports are not supposed to care about making money at the next level, it’s supposed to be for the better of the “student athlete”. Yeah right, it’s about not paying a college athlete to bash their bodies, yet paying the old coach $5 million. You don’t see any hypocrisy in that? I guess we should get rid of the science department at UGA, since it’s not bringing in money and must be subsidized with state money.

Dacula fans know exactly who our team is. A bunch of kids with alot of fight and desire, led by a coaching staff that knows what they our doing. It is the perfect example of what high school football is all about. We weren’t supposed to be in the running for our region….#2 seed, Not going to go far in the playoffs, (AJC had us as underdogs in both games, 14 point dog last night) and we are in the field of 8. Do we match up with Colquitt? Probably not, but we will show up and play and do it with class regardless of the outcome. We are just a result of what happens when you have a great youth football program. Gwinnett continualy gets disrespected by the rest of the state that we are not that good….but the proof is in the list of State Champions. Don’t think I am biased, I grew up in south Georgia and still support my alma matter, but facts are facts.

All four of my sons went to Norcross, and I agree that Norcross is a mystery. But I know that they have worked hard to get where they are right now. I actually think that is their secret — slow and steady. They are blessed with some great athletes and coaches who have been there a long time and truly care about the kids. I’m sure we have our fans that feel certain ways like every community does, but for the most part Norcross supporters are loyal and good sports. As far as feeling entitled, most of the fans that I know around here simply pull for the kids and are proud of their accomplishments.

If only we were in another region………They beat Dacula on opening night, but we fought to the end and the final score was somewhere around 11 points difference. They have a HUGE offensive line and couldn’t make it in the top four of their region???????? 7AAAAAA was loaded this year I agree, but it is what it is. If i’m not mistaken, they were 4-4 in region play, that doesn’t get it done. Remember 3700 students, Dacula a student body of 1970.

I understood the frustrations at the posters who were debating with Leftfield, but when they inserted comments like, “Dreams from my father, HuffPo, and left wing” then that pretty much blows their validity to me and well, shows their “true colors”. I am African American, liberal, voted twice for Barry, and read Malcolm Gladwell but I also enjoyed reading and following HS sports, so there is enough room in America for both view points to me. Some posters have a difficult time sticking to discussion of the game and resort to criticizing fan bases and other irrelevant aspects of the sport always sprout these off hand discussion/debates.

Now onto football, the Gwinnett Co chesthumpers always amaze me when there are still two Region 1 teams alive and supports percentage wise that when you have more teams in the dance you should have more in the QFs. Truth be told, NG should not be there….the Archer D Coord gave that game away with the last prevent defense call.

Don’t read to much into the shutout when Norcross played CH. CH is a much different team now and they had several key injuries the first time they played. The game was at Norcross and if those two teams play each other in the Dome for all the marbles, it will be a completely different game. I don’t know if anybody is playing better on both sides of the ball (CH). They are going to be tough to beat if they don’t beat themselves.

It couldn’t have been the outdated useless wing-t that ran for about 336 yards against the fastest hardest hitting defense in the state. @Ghost of 316, people have been doubting Dacula for the last 25 years. The fact is this is Dacula’s 12th trip to the quarterfinals since 1988, which is the most of any Gwinnett county public school during that time span. We have also won 10 region championships in 5 different classifications. That is the most in the history of the state. I challenge anyone to find me a team in the state of Georgia that has gotten more out of their talent in that time. Mill Creek is over double the size of Dacula so I don’t want to hear their whining. Mill Creek had a losing record vs Dacula when Coach Maloof retired and we hired the previous coach (I won’t even mention his name due to the painful memories). We got rid of him and the administration hit a homerun in hiring Tommy Jones. 1-9 last year and in the quarterfinals in Coach Jones’ 1st season. Unbelievable. Tommy Jones played for Dave Hunter and coached under Kevin Maloof. You can’t have a much better pedigree and he is absolutely the coach of the year in the entire state of Georgia in any class!!!!!

Football Dad. – whoever you are today. I did not mean to appear to sound entitled in my last post. I apologize to ALL for bragging. But my gosh we had just defeated a team that had been in the past two year’s Title Game! Sportsnut had told us over and over we didn’t have a chance. So yeah, I was excited, and I am proud of our Vikings. Say what you want to about that.

Next Friday it will be like David and Goliath when we make the long trip to Norcross. We have all the respect in the world for them. Most of their starters were starters last year and won the Title. We respect that, and know our season very likely will end next week. But we never expected to get this far. We never expected to beat Lovejoy. So yeah, like I said above, we’re excited, we’re happy, and ” we’s some proud Vikings!”

Think the CC Packers actually like to travel the long distances, as long as it’s not in SCHOOL BUSES. They did that when they went to Hoover in AL, and Propst admitted it was a big mistake! (BTW Hoover just barely squeaked by last night in the AL playoffs, by one point to Florence). Reason Packer players like to travel? He always takes them up the day before. Motels can be fun for kids that age. Only difference this time is they will be traveling on Turkey Day. Knowing Propst, he will find a Cracker Barrel for them and they will pig out on Thursday. Really don’t see Dacula being a match for the “woodchoppers”. Just put Bull Barge out there on defense by himself, he can handle it. The only real matchup the Pack will have will be in the state title game. CCHS 31 Dacula 13

@Sportnut to have you in our corner for a short while. Lovejoy is young and will be loaded next year just like this year. Don’t know the 2014 schedule but I hope you guys are on it again. That matchup is becoming a healthy rivalry. Hopefully, the pack can continue to play well on offense. We handled NC and Newnan well. I am baffled though. I have seen the Pack play 7 games in person and 2 on TV and the rest on the radio and it appears they haven’t been challenged. I expected more from NC. Our O has been a bit inconsistent all year. Are we peaking at the right time or have we yet to see a great defense? Hopefully, we are peaking but time will tell. We can hope in the meantime.
