Lowndes 23, Lovejoy 18

Lowndes figured out how to limit the damage from Lovejoy receiver Preston Williams and advanced to the third round of the Class AAAAAA playoffs with a 23-18 win Friday night at Twelve Oaks Stadium.

Their solution for Williams was to play keep-away and while the big Wildcat receiver caught five passes for 153 yards, they prevented him from taking over the game as he did in Lovejoy’s first-round win over Marietta.

Getting two first-half touchdowns, the Vikings added three field goals by Nick Hart, and won in a game that was statistically lop-sided but turned close at the end.

The Vikings rolled up 358 total yards, 336 of it on the ground, and ran 60 offensive plays to Lovejoy’s 37.

Alex Brown led the Lowndes’ rushing attack with 77 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Brandon Roberts added 71 yards on five carries and Jerome Daniels had 68 yards on 12 carries.

Lovejoy quarterback Quintarius Neely was hurried much of the night and finished with 193 yards on just seven completions.

When the Lowndes offense was on the field, it was grinding clock even when it wasn’t scoring points.

Lovejoy (10-2) which had appeared in the state championship game the past two years, never led but had a chance in the fourth quarter after Jeremiah Kirkland’s 3-yard touchdown run with 7:09 left.

The Wildcats stopped Lowndes and got the ball back in the final four minutes, but Lowndes’ Eric Hart picked off Neely’s pass and the Vikings ran out the clock.

After stopping Lovejoy on the opening possession, Lowndes (9-3) scored first, driving 43 yards in 13 plays, capped by Brown’s 6-yard run around the left end.

Daniels’ 26-yard run at the 8:17 mark in the second period staked Lowndes to a 14-0 lead, and at that point the Vikings had outgained Lovejoy 127-4.

In a span of 41 seconds Lovejoy got back in the game. First, quarterback Neely connected with Williams for an 80-yard touchdown pass. Lowndes blocked the kick and led 14-6.

On the second snap of the ensuring possession, Viking runner Eric Hart fumbled and Lovejoy’s Brandon Williams picked it up and raced into the end zone from 27 yards out to make it 14-12.

Hart’s first field goal, from 40 yards out, gave the Vikings a 17-12 lead, which they took to halftime.

Two more field goals by Hart, from 36 and 19 yards pushed it to 23-12 with 8:52 left in the game.

Lowndes 7 10 3 3 – 23

Lovejoy 0 12 0 6 – 18

LD – Alex Brown 6 run (Nick Hart kick)

LD – Jerome Daniel 26 run (Hart kick)

LJ – Preston Williams 80 pass from Quintarius Neely (kick blocked)

LJ – Brandon Williams 27 fumble return (kick failed)

LD – Hart 40 field goal

LD – Hart 36 field goal

LD – Hart 19 field goal

LJ – Jeremiah Kirkland 3 run (pass failed)

Great season Wildcats. Great game Lowdnes! I’m pulling for Lowdnes now so I can say “At least we lost to the potential champions!” lol But in all honesty, I’m proud of my Cats for going down swinging!

Decent year Lovejoy. You’ve made this former player proud considering how many players we lost from last year. Had a pretty young team. The cats will be back. Just reminds me a lot of the team in 2010. Next year should be interesting.

2 young teams playing each other. One was battle tested by 1AAAAAA and one was battle tested by 2AAAAAA. The #3 seed and possibly the 4th best team from Region 1 shows what it means to be Region 1 battle tested compared to the battle testing received from the top seed from Region 2. How do you stop Williams? Like I said, can’t throw a pass from your back side.

I wasn’t counting Lovejoy out until the clock said 0:00. Apparently it did.

Bksmith14 probably has a long drive home, but a happy one. We’ll probably hear from him tomorrow.

Tough loss for Lovejoy, but for all practical purposes, it was a miracle that they were even playing.

Sportsnut can tell us how great they’ll be next year.

Oh, and that very weak 8-AAAAAA team still has Dacula playing (I don’t think for long, though). And that very weak 8-AAAAAA had a second team lose by just 2 points with 7 seconds left. Incidentally, it is Gwinnett vs. Georgia next week. But we all know, 2-AAAAAA was always so much stronger. Right, you know who?

hats off to LJ tonight. Has had an exceptional 3 year run, and is building a resume to become a dynasty
Winning it all I think 3 years ago in your division, and then moving up to the largest division and haven’t missed a beat.. ya’ll went to the big dance last year, and even going to the the play offs the first year when moved up.
No need to hang your head over this loss,
From a faithful first of all a Lowndes Viking, and second of all a faithful high school football fan. and IMO ya’ll are and have been and pray will continue to be a class act group, team, and athletes…

We outnumbered the Lovejoy fans and we out yelled them. A freaking 6A playoff game and we travel 200 miles and have more fans than the home team had. Embarrassing I’m sure to Sportsnut and Lovejoy!

Lovejoy had one 1st down in the whole first half and it was on a Lowndes penalty. One first half first down! Then, Lovejoy had one third quarter first down. Two first downs in 3 quarters for the bridesmaids of all bridesmaids (not counting North Gwinnett)!

By the way, Lowndes had a sophomore QB too! Yes we’re bragging. A number three team against an unbeatable power pronounced week after week by Sportsnut as unbeatable! We’s some proud Vikings tonight. Please over look our bragging. We’s some proud Vikings!

But my question is still unanswered. Where were their fans?

Good luck to Colquitt next week. They should roll on toward the title game. We really have our work cut out having to face a team as strong as Norcross, with about 20 returning starters from last year.

Sorry for you Camden fans and team. All the Viking Nation wanted you to win last night. (Gotta support all Region 1 teams!)

Lowndes did what they had to do to win that game. They controlled the clock and the game. To those talking attendance, we never have large crowds. There is simply not the interest in football in our neck of the woods. I enjoyed the band. They were large and loud. The fans were great for Lowndes.

For those saying I claimed we were unbeatable need to stop lying. I never claimed such. Never said we were better or would win. Lowndes earned this one. Again, congratulations.

The young Cats have no reason to hang their heads. They went 10-2 in what should have been a rebuilding year. We are all very proud of you. We will be back next year with the same agenda, trying to win it all.

Lowndes dominated this game from start to finish. Score was no indication of how lowndes controlled this game. Lovejoy scored two offensive tds , the other was on a fumble they picked up and ran in untouched for a td. We were on lovejoys 2 yd line 4th down and less than a yard with under 5 min to go and coach mac opted to kick the fg to go up 23-12 and then we were on lovejoys 30 with 2 min to go and just ran clock out bc they had no timeouts. Lowndes is playing the best ball we have played all year , we dont even look like the same team that loss to colquitt. Hats off to lovejoy, they have some special players and williams IS the best wide reciever in the state..with no question. #31 brandon roberts did a great job on him and he only got behind him once . His forst few steps are so explosive. Beating lovejoy was just controlling the clock and limiting their big plays. As for their o line, i thought lovejoy did a good job giving their qb time…they had a senior offensive line. Not many run it on lowndes with success. I think we had 2 sacks last night. We just imposed our will and ran it around over and through them. To be honest , i was tired of all the lovejoy hype. Great team , very athletic, but last night they ran into lowndes at the wrong time. You could tell they have not seen the wing t ..as one of the LOVEJOY bloggers on here said…Lowndes is no TUCKER…trying to say tucker is better or the wing t they run is more explosive , well sir you are right..we are the Lowndes High Vikings. Lovejoy..congrats on a good year. You guys will be right in the thick of it again. As for norcross, they dont see the wing t all year either so i am ready to see our vikings take em on. Our defense is playing at a high level right now and we will be ready for norcross

when lovejoys d line came onto field i will admit i was a lil concerned about how much success we would have running the ball…they were big fast and physical. Our o line was moving em out of the way and opening holes . The oline has gotten better for lowndes,,someting has sparked this team. Hopefully it will continue next week.

@sportsnut…you said if all we did was run we would lose..well all we did was run and thats all we needed to do to win . I thought lovejoys play calling was bad. You guys have the athletes no question.

@bksmith14 most of our lineman are juniors offense and defense even some sophomores. That what we’ve been saying all year this was a young team 70 % of this team was ninth graders our first trip to the Dome 4 AAAA. Then last year 6 AAAAAA we had so many seniors the tenth grader barely played. Well we graduated the entire offense and defense with the exception of a couple of players. So next year we are sitting on about 40 seniors. I like our chances.

Yo, I guess the Lowndes High Vikings made a fibber out of you . The number of championships won by Lovejoy and the number won by Lowndes (Mc Phearson). My comment to you that we would show up. Suprise, suprise, suprise. Lowndes will suprise someone every year. Our own crosstown rival the cats was favorite by two touchdowns, Lowndes lost to Newton, and some of the same jokers thats praising them now wanted to crucify(idiots) McPhearson. Since Norcross took that tail whipping from BTW, form Miami, they have been playing good. But we will show up. Lovejoy has a good team. But you have to be careful in playing any school from 1AAAAAA,they will sneak up on you. See you next year.

Congrats Lovejoy on a great season. @ aviking fan, not sure what you were looking at but Lovejoy fans and supporters did come out in large numbers. It’s a little different up here in the city than it is down in the country, because we have so many more schools and games to choose from even at the playoff level. Clayton Co. had 2 teams in the playoffs, Mundy’s Mill and Lovejoy, both with a fan base pretty much in the same area. You guys only have one team and sure the whole town shuts down to support and that’s commendable. Yes, your band and fans were loud. The band was great, the high school musical like selections with the loud creshendo’s were on point. But don’t sleep on our wildcats they are very talented group of players. Lowndes should focus on their task at hand and that’s moving forward in the playoffs .. you have your win over Lovejoy, so move on. Remember every round gets harder and harder. I wonder if Lowndes will be as loud next week..

@bksmith14 You are probably one of the only people see what I see. Lovejoy’s problem is a problem any coach would love to have. Too much talent. When you have several wide receivers over 6′2 good problem. When you have a tight 6′2 230 maybe 250 hands like gloves good problem. Several running backs that could have easy been thousand yard rushing backs if put in the position to do so. But no one would know this because we never throw to tight ends. We but the smallest running in 6A in a single set and send up against a 2500 lb. line with no blocking instead of tossing him something outside and let the linebackers and corner backs go one on one with a Barry Sanders style runner. He wins that fight. But when you make yourself a third down air it out team that will only take you so for. We may have the # 1 wide receiver in the nation. But someone has the # 1 and 2 DB’s as well #31 the kid put in great work last night I saw him cramping really bad. But apparently I was the only one to see it but we didn’t exploit it. And his replacement #28 has good hips but he was no match for Williams he was undersized we didn’t exploit that either. We ten to pick our golden kids at the beganing of the season . And from that some kids have to work there but off just to get on the field an other have to work there but off to get off the field. But we will always be the girlfriend never the wife until we utilize all our talent.

Lowndes fans: I guess it’s easy to bash teams you have beaten, but when your team is beaten that’s a whole different story. Colquitt County, remember, the team that beat Lowndes 37 to 7, I didn’t hear any thing about that game but how sorry your coaches were and running the same play, play after play. How soon we forget! Everyone knows how great Lowndes WAS 6 years ago and frankly, no one cares but Lowndes fans! This is 2013, the year that counts now! Who ever may win, it will mean the same to that team as those state championships did to Lowndes years ago. The fans are always saying in Lowndes how they are so respectful and win or lose with dignity. I find this amusing. Look at some of the comments on here by Lowndes fans. Uncalled for and disrespectful. I respect the Lowndes football team, but your fans need etiquette training. My son played for the 9th grade Colquitt County football team who literally got spanked by Lowndes. The Lowndes fans in the stand yelling at 14 and 15 year old young men, “Shove it down their throats!”, “Make it 50 points!” to me was SO disrespectful to those young men. Colquitt County never yelled such junk to a young football team. The only game the ninth graders won was against Coffee! The cheers at the end of the game was for both teams and Coffee knew that, we made sure they did. And what did we hear leaving Lowndes after the ninth grade football game? “Ya’ll better tell Varsity to bring it!” Well guess what Lowndes? Varsity did bring it. I know you guys have erased it from your memory, but don’t worry I am here to remind you! None of these teams are perfect, including Lowndes. I sincerely hope Lowndes wins against Norcross. I would love to welcome Lowndes to the Hawg pen here in Moultrie! But no matter, if Norcross wins, which is a possibility( to the delusional fans of Lowndes) and if Colquitt also wins against Dacula, Colquitt will of course love to play Norcross! To Lovejoy fans and players: Nothing but respect to ya’ll! Ya’ll have a geat team and you have played a great season. No matter what the fans of Lowndes say on this comment blog, you guys keep your heads up and we will see ya next year! Good Luck! Oh by the way, ya’ll also have an awesome band!! I love it!
