Class AAA roundup

By Score Atlanta

Blessed Trinity 38, White County 0: Carter McManes and Chad Manchey rushed for two touchdowns apiece for Blessed Trinity. The host Titans extended a 7-0 lead after one quarter to 28-0 at halftime. Conor Davis threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Pat Jasinski before Marc Nolan capped the scoring with a 33-yard field goal.

Carver-Columbus 19, Jefferson County 0: On offense, Carver-Columbus’s touchdowns came from Noah Hickey’s 3-yard scamper, a 55-yard strike from Jawon Pass to Nate Barley and a halfback pass from Khane Pass, Jawon’s brother, to Raequan Lowe.

St. Pius 31, Cartersville 19: Fullback Dalton Wilson rushed 17 yards for 100 yards and touchdowns of three and two yards for visiting St. Pius, which also got touchdown runs from quarterback Joey Connors and running back Jack Pelt. Thomas O’Leary hit a 20-yard field goal for St. Pius, and Fred Dorsey blocked a punt and had an interception.

Washington County 56, Peach County 16: For the first time ever, the host Golden Hawks beat the Trojans and did so in convincing fashion. A.J. Gray had a career night rushing for six touchdowns and 230 yards. He scored three touchdowns in each half and paced an offense that moved the ball well using big plays.

Hey instagopher, please quit trying to patronize the Lion fans. It’s a wonder any team in the area can win the way Carrollnot cons all of the talent into riding the bench in West Georgia’s old stadium. If you don’t mind, please keep you and your overzealous fans and overrated best team money can buy in the 4A boards. While you are at it, please give under-the-table Teague a raise. In the past thirty years, Central has won more state titles than Black Gold and will continue to use hard work to increase that margin in the future. Now go home and pat yourself on the back some more for wearing Trojan t-shirts, that really seemed to show up and help on the field tonight. Oh yea, look up pompous while you are at it.

Waco and Peach common opponent Baldwin who beat Peach easy and WACO beat Baldwin easy…WACO and Blessed Trinity common opponent Lovett.. WACO put up 36 and Blessed Trinity only 3.. Common opponents tell the story…

Son of Waco- common opponents are a good sign . You forgot to tell that you gave up 35 to Lovett ,playing with their backup QB .Also funny how you point @BT to watch last years Pius game, a game you lost , to get an idea of your speed. You were fast…….. to jump offside AND you looked really fast chasing your own fumbles that game. Discipline will win this game for BT.

As for all the Buford fans you are the best program in the state, rivaled maybe only by Sandy Creek these days. Must be of great pride and joy to watch kids you have never seen before show up in your high school and play for a community they don’t live in. “If you build it they will come”In your case from all over Gwinnett and metro Atl..Buford must just be code for GFL all stars.

@WolfDang.. Why must you be so NASTY. No one else uses abusive language but you.. Why is that? Does it give you more power, feel more like a man? I’ve watch HS FB for years’ with 3 sons playing and now 2 of them at a Collegiate level.this game builds character, integrity , tenacity and provides all these young men with many life lessons that are invaluable. Buford is a powerhouse, no one is denying that. They are a great team to watch and yes are envied. It’s is defeating to others’ in AAA knowing that they have to eventually go up against Buford.. Which really is no contest for Buford. Honestly, glad you are moving up to AAAA( could be AAAAAA) and probably still win. BT deserves more credit than anyone has ever given them. Last year graduated 22 seniors .. 19 of them were starters.. This was a “rebuilding year”.. HAH so much for that.. We are in the Elite Eight and now just found out we have HOME field advantage next Fri against Washington County. Good Luck to all the teams.. You should be proud of how far you have gotten and remember “this is a game” and how great it has been for your son to be part of such an incredible experience.

Which team will be the one you all cry about next year and why do you not complain about WA and SPX? You make excuses for why you can’t win and blame a team and community you know nothing about. The best of it all is that you make excuses so your boys won’t feel so bad after losing the game, thanks! :-)
Marist will just be another team and another preparation next year. A great football game is what we are looking for. Your insults don’t seem to bother any of us, we chose to keep winning! BTW, Gainesville is still in the playoffs, why don’t you cry about that too.

@TheTruth BT and Lovett run the same offense??? You can tell a good Defense from when they have to stop a team and do it 3 times in a row for the win… If BT can do what SPX did to us last year I will tip my hat to y’all but I feel without Nick Glass we win that game against SPX.. Back to our matchup, Peach was a playaction team and found out quickly that their QB can’t turn his back on our D-Line and waste time fakeing to the RB because he will be hit hard repeatedly.. From what I see your defense like to play off coverage.. Any game you watch of us from the past 2 yrs we excel best in space.. Also, i notice in last yr game with Decatur that when they switched Qb’s and went to a read option offense they scored two easy Td’s.. Is that what got them the win this year??? Check out our game highlightsn on 13wmaz.com in the football friday night section..

@The Truth – great job calling out the facts on WACO! What is interesting is that WACO thinks BT and Pius are afraid of speed and raw talent yet fails to cite the fact that BT and Pius are 4-0 vs. Cedar Grove beating them handily the last two years. Yep, we’re always concerned. The difference is we always respect our opponents enough to where we know their strengths and are concerned about them enough to coach our boys and our programs up to play “team, disciplined” ball. Our programs are great year in year out because we teach system and discipline and coaches work hard for the players vs. relying on raw talent to carry the team. This is why BT and Pius can replace 17-20 starters a year and there are no changes in results. This is why BT and Pius win year in and year out because we build our program the right way, we grow our kids from Jr. ball on and by the time most of the kids are juniors in high school they’ve played together for 5-6 years. This is why McFarlin and Standard are two of the greatest coaches in Georgia High School history. It is about team and community and building character by teaching kids how to compete and what is great to see is that McFarlin and Standard are leading Top 10 Football Programs year in and year out doing it the “right way.” Also, pretty low WACO to say that “if SPX didn’t have Nick Glass, we would have won.” Like Glass was the whole team? Hardly. When BT last year lost a 3 year starting tailback to a knee injury, you never heard anybody making excuses about that. Had we had JD, we would had likely been playing Buford in the Dome and would have beat Buford in a close one, for sure!

@Truth – and great job calling out Buford for what it truly is. What Wolfdawg and all the other Buford homers fail to realize is that NOBODY hates Buford, or is envious of Buford, what people hate is the disingenuous nature of the people of Buford who actually think that they have a winning program because they are growing it with their own kids and from within their own community. Like pouring water down someone’s back and telling them it’s raining??? Please Buford. Nobody debates the quality of your teams but people aren’t stupid, people know you are getting away with murder via a GHSA loophole. That is the reason why people from other communities who build their teams the right way all root against Buford…it is because of your smug arrogance…it is the David vs. Goliath mentality. Buford has corrupted what High School Football is supposed to be about, and so all of us “Davids” are lining up to knock down Goliath. NOT INTIMIDATED. Go Carver, Beat Buford! Go BT, Go St. Pius, Go WACO – anybody and everybody that plays Buford, Go Go Go and Beat Buford! FEAR NOT – REMEMBER CALHOUN! IT CAN BE DONE !!!

Congrats to the Ringgold team on their victory over us last night. Your team had a great game plan. And I would like to Thank the Cedar Grove players for a good year. It would have been a great accomplishment, to be the 4th seed and win two or three road game. But it didn’t work out that way. Keep your heads up. Sometimes in life, we are out matched and don’t even know it. You just have to play with the cards, you are dealt. Its was great to see all the parents and fans support, the last two weeks. Let’s build on this for next year. To the Seniors. Thanks for all the hard work, and leadership. You guys will be truly missed. Coaches let’s get to work, because August will be here before you know it. No time to play the what if game. We have a lot of young talent, looking for guidence. We made the top 10, two weeks this year. Let’s build off this, and make it five or six weeks next year. We are the Saints of Cedar Grove.

Getting back to what HS Football is supposed to be about, Congrats to the BT Titans – first ever Elite 8 appearance in school history! (school has only been open 13 years). Kudos to Coach McFarlin for all the hard work, passion and leadership – prior to his arrival BT had never won a playoff game but in three seasons he has lead the Titans to two Region Championships and a 4-2 playoff Record with more to come! Coach McFarlin has come in and has unharnessed the potential of the Titan Community and we are looking for more to come! Congrats to all of the Coaches, Players and Parents who worked hard, bought into the system and have delivered BT’s best season ever after replacing 17 starters. BT has been open only 13 years yet has won over 26 State Titles in a variety of sports and two Director’s Cups, and we’re looking to add a football state championship to the trophy case very soon! For some reason when I pointed out the Speed difference from a quote BT head coach said a fan would get offended… So my question is we can all see the speed difference, but show me where you can tell that BT is more “Discipline” “Plays Better Team Football” or “That WACO Relies on Just Raw Talent to Win”??? Also, I said I “FEEL” we would have won if Nick Glass wasn’t on the field. I mean dude made so many great plays, I think I have the right to my own opinion without it being disrespectful, but hey some folks are just sensitive…. @BTHomersimpsondad, You actually described the program at Buford. Are you so stupid to think kids come into the program their senior year (as you suggest) just to win a championship. No respect for idiots like you that have no facts, just lip service.
You should stop disrespecting GHSA, because you are making claims that they are allowing wrong doing, NOT!
Maybe you should stop by the fields that are set up for the 7 and 8 year olds at Buford and then you would see that you are wrong.
That being said the Falcons will soon announce they plan to build a duplicate open air dome over Tom Riden field.

Having watched high school football in Georgia for almost 30 years this entire argument is getting old. The reality is that disciplined football will win you games – especially in region play. Eventually, good programs will all have discipline and then talent will take over. We can all argue about recruiting, discipline, tuition and the rest of some of where this blog is heading but in the end this is about high school football. 99% of these kids will never play again after their senior year, but it is that same 99% that will always remember playing. I am sure this blog will continue to decline as the playoffs get more heated – just as it has since Valdosta was king of the world in the 70s and 80s. Remember it is about the kids and about a game. Make sure that come Friday night everybody remembers that and acts accordingly. BTW, I do think it would take a significant upset for BT to beat WACO and for anybody to beat Buford. In the end, enjoy the games.

A few thoughts:
- Congrats to WACO for (finally) defeating Peach Co. There was a lot of debate about WACO vs. Peach in the 90’s when Neal Rumble coached Peach and Rick Tomlinson coached WACO. Now that WACO has beaten Peach, they can have bragging rights until the next round. But please know that this may be the least talented, least experienced Peach team since 1999. WACO beat a team whose average weight on OL is 190lbs. WACO beat a team who starts 7 Fr and So on defense.WACO beat a team that finished 8-4 in a rebuilding year–a team that they were supposed to beat. Congrats. Enjoy the win. My entire household (8 transplants from GA now living in Seattle) will cheer for you against Buford, IF you get by BT and the semifinals opponent.
- As to talking about how Catholic schools win with “discipline” and “heart” while the public/county/city schools win with raw talent, I think that it’s just good old fashion southern prejudice. It’s another way of identifying “white” teams and “black” teams. I remember the Cairo vs. Carver-Columbus finals game where AJC writers and the game announcers billed it as the discipline and heart of Cairo versus the raw and unpredictable talent of Carver (black coach, predominantly black team). I also remember the Josey-Cedar Shoals game where the Josey (Augusta team predominantly black) team was billed as the raw talent team and Cedar Shoals was the disciplined team with gritty wins. Agree or disagree, the fact is that in GA, it always comes back to race.
- Final thought. Buford. If I were to move to Atlanta or anywhere within 30 miles of Buford, then my kids would go to Buford. In fact, I would move to Buford just so my kids would attend Buford. Why? World class education. Not just a good education by GA standards (which are really low), but an outstanding education by national standards (which are still low, but much better than GA). I would pay money into the Buford athletic programs to continue to bring the best talent and coaches. Why? Because my kids deserve it. My kids deserve to be brought up in the best atmosphere I can provide them. If that means giving them the Buford experience, then they will get the Buford experience. Yes, Buford’s concept ruins the purity of high school football, but so do the politicians running the state house in Atlanta. In the name of choosing battles wisely, I’d gladly give up the purity of high school football (which has already been ruined by the year round camps and the meat market mentality of recruiting) to provide a winning atmosphere for my kids.

Those “holier than tho” BTHomer being the lead prick, actually recruit, allow or disallow kids into their places of study & act like they are being ‘cheated’ against…

Just show up on the gridiron & play the game & quit your whining.. Those are probably the parents that —- Oh, just forget it.. No Way BT or whatever “Catholic” school might be in the finals, win…

@BigWill Please don’t lump our fans at St. Pius X with this BTDad. We come on the blog and have some friendly chatting and throw out a few good nature ribbing with WACO folks and others but have nothing but respect for some of these outstanding high school teams.
I follow these blogs through the season and have not seen one SPX fan get stupid or demeaning with anyone.
@WolfDawg we at SPX know how good Buford is and play you guys in JV and Freshman football for the past 4 or so years. We know when we play Buford on any level you have to bring your A game. Our head coaches are pretty good friends, we (no regular Pius blogger)are not on here getting on anyone’s school. Don’t judge us by what another region supporter has to say.
If he was truly a fan of hs football he certainly would not lumps us all together with Marist geez truly blasphemy !! After last years title game vs. Buford you have earned respect. Hopefully we will meet up again but we have another away game vs. a very formidable Callaway juggernaut so not looking past them.
@2ndJester your dead on about high school meat market with these national junior and sophomore and gezz even 8th grade football all star games truly crazy. Do these parents ever think that their kid could get hurt playing a team game that is thrown together in a couple days?
I always challenge anyone that has any info to go to the GHSA and supply it because the rumors that get posted here are just crazy. I haven’t heard of anyone getting caught have you? Most violations are self reported and Buford reported on themselves last year right? So Buford more than anyone deserves applause for doing the right thing.
@anyone who is still reading this, I have been around St. Pius a few years I have seen and heard of us losing kids who have played in our feeder programs because oh many different reasons but I only complain and yes I will whine when we lose them to a school on Ashford Dunwoody road who’s tuition is several dollars more but end up paying way less there then at Pius. And yes a couple even have played and are currently on NFL teams. That also goes for baseball college teams and basketball teams. We are unique and can’t formally complain because at SPX we don’t actually have a 7th or 8th graders at our school they come from Catholic and public middle schools. Rising 9th grades students are fair game. A certain “private catholic school”, notice the elitist private notation, can cherry pick and use the financial situation of a family to their advantage. Plus we don’t have tennis courts or swimming pool on campus. Heck we just got our own baseball field last season and quit renting Oglethorpe’s.
Finally safe travels and player safety to all this weekend.
Damn shame about A. Murray still don’t think that gives Tech a chance.

@jester The pity party for Peach Co is crazy.. I mean they chose to play 7 Fr/So, so why make an excuse out of it… WACO played a bunch of sophomores on Defense last year, did we cry?? Our OL average about 190lbs too this year do we cry??? This was the first time WACO and Peach have played each other since we became a spread offense, so the years of putting 9 in the box to shut down our power I run game are over.. So from now on we will punish Peach and Baldwin for all of those years of heartbreaking losses they gave us.. That 40 point beat down we gave Peach and the 50 point one we gave Baldwin this year is just the beginning..

I guess if he made that much difference, SPX should have just bent school rules and allowed him to stay enrolled one more week? No, team play is why SPX beat you and also played the best game against Buford that they saw all year. SPX doesn’t bend the rules no matter the circumstance. Others should try living by the rules sometime.

First, BTHomerDad – you need to stop. You are validating every single stereotype anybody in the state has about Catholic/private schools and it isn’t pretty. Be humble and you know only too well that while this year’s team has truly earned it but a 1 pt win vs SPX and a 27-17 win vs Woodward and a loss to Decatur reminds us how close it was to not happening. Now this entire disciplined thing does not sit right with me. Disciplined teams are a function of their coach and their leadership and too often it is code for a white team which is disciplined while a black team gets by on having athletes. If you were at the Cedar Grove game you well know how inaccurate that is. If Cedar Grove doesn’t fumble on multiple drives in our territory (which to be fair were caused by vicious hits by our defense) we don’t win that game. They were an impressive and incredibly disciplined team. Recruiting – BT doesn’t do it and anybody who knows AD Ricky Turner knows that. And stop whining about Buford. We are doing great things at BT and bashing Buford doesn’t help us to become better.

BTDad – well put, thanks. Best of luck to your squad the rest of the way. I think you guys will give WaCo all they can handle and then some. SPX has a pretty tough road ahead on our side of the bracket. Hopefully the Pope has a rep on at least one side of the field at the Dome. Who knows, it could be a SPX-BT rematch. How much fun would that be?
