Top 10 will have several casualties this week

Every Top 10 team in Class AAAAAA survived the first round, but at least three will be eliminated Friday as the playoff bracket has conspired to produce some second-round blockbusters.

Those would be -

No. 8 Hillgrove at No. 2 Camden County

No. 3 Colquitt County at No. 10 North Cobb

No. 1 North Gwinnett at No. 4 Archer.

The home team is perhaps the underdog in two of them. Archer (11-0) is the only unbeaten team in the class but seeks the respect that only a victory over a team such as North Gwinnett can give it. North Gwinnett has two victories over Top 10 teams. Archer has none.

Which Top 10 teams do you expect to lose this week?

View Results

Loading ... Loading ...
North Cobb is the Region 4 champion, but Colquitt County is protecting a streak of four semifinal runs that have included several impressive road victories.

Region 1 champion Camden County is expected to defeat Hillgrove, but Hillgrove has won in the playoffs at Camden before (2010).

Other things to watch for this week in AAAAAA –

Jordan Ellis of Peachtree Ridge and Preston Williams of Lovejoy inserted themselves as player-of-the-year candidates with huge games last week. Ellis rushed for 263 yards and scored six touchdowns against Lassiter, and Williams caught seven passes for 275 yards and four touchdowns against Marietta. Peachtree Ridge as at Dacula. Lovejoy is at home against Lowndes.

Two other running backs went over 200 yards in the first round. Brookwood’s Jesse Brown will be facing Norcross’ tough defense, which pitched a shutout against Etowah in the first round. Hughes’ Keion Davis is up against McEachern.

Though ranked only No. 7, Collins Hill is the team to beat in its quarter of the draw. Perhaps no team has a better running back/quarterback pair than the Eagle’s Tyler Herman (2,530 yards passing) and RB Tyler Henderson (1,410 yards rushing). Collins Hill is at Alpharetta.

Would love to see the semi-finals, of at least 6A played in a central location like Macon or Warner Robins so more people could travel a shorter distance to see them. Maybe on a Saturday. That would still leave the finals to be played at the dome in Atlanta, since the “powers-that-be” think that has to be.

Archer is my upset pick this week. I have seen them play and think they are better than people give them credit. I also think Norcross pitches another shutout. I think Norcross goes all the way to the Dome unless they meet PTR. I think the running of Jordan Ellis could open the passing game. I am not a big believer in the PTR QB, but he has 3 solid wr’s and a big oline to stand behind.

I couldn’t agree more about TnT (Tyler n Tyler (I just made that up)) being the best QB/RB dual in the state. I think these guys are the most under-rated under the radar kids in the state.

Interesting that most posters are picking Colquitt to win over North Cobb with the exception of NC posters. I hope they are correct but I would assume more people would be picking NC.

You guys are so hypocritical on here about these teams it’s funny. You say Lovejoy is weak. You said Norcross is a power house but can lose to Peachtree ridge. When Lovejoy scrimmaged PTR first game of the season and beat them 56-24. I do know it was preseason an I’m sure they are better now but so is everybody else. The score was 42-24 varsity. Before the underclass men took the field.

@ football Dad….First of all I never said Norcross was a power house….I said, that I felt Norcross would go all the way to the dome unless they met PTR. Don’t recall saying anything about a powerhouse or whether or not they would even win when they got there. What does the fact that LJ beat PTR in a preseason scrimmage have to do with anything? High School football is all about match ups. The prime example there is NG beating Norcross, Norcross beating CH, and CH beating NG. Each team matched up differently.

Clearly you are a LJ homer, but don’t let that cloud your vision. I saw LJ struggle badly against Marrietta, E Cowetta & Alpharetta and lose to Colquit…What should I take a way from that?

Todd H, now you have me thoroughly confused! You show, on the enrollment listing for GHSA from the 11/18 1244PM article, 2346 for Colquitt Co. High School. An article in yesterday’s Moultrie Observer about construction of the new high school says current enrollment is 1700, and the new school will only hold 2200. What’s up with that? Lots of difference in 1700 and 2346. Am I missing something here? The lowest school in enrollment in 6A now is Lee Co. showing 1802.

@Patrick..I agree about the semi finals being played at neutral sites. I would even go a step further and say play the quarters at neutral sites. Once teams reach the quarters they are pretty equal and neither region position or a coin flip should determine a home team. There are enough 10000 seat high school and college stadiums around the state to handle the crowds.

RobFromNorcross

There isn’t that much of a home-field advantage in the playoffs that would make it worth it to move games other than the championship to a neutral site. The atmosphere at a neutral site is never going to be close to the atmosphere at one of the involved teams home stadiums. There is also the cost of forcing two teams to travel and the venues would have to be preset– we are in the middle of college football as well so these venues are not easy to get. How stupid would it be to have two teams from Gwinnett County have to travel to Macon to play each other? In many ways I would prefer to play on the road, the kids have fewer regular distractions. So, the value of home field is pretty minimal in my opinion.

@my2cents Apparently you wasn’t at neither of these games. Because Lovejoy scored at will on Marietta. The coach stop passing the ball for two quarters. instead of running up the score while he had them trying to figure out what to do with Williams. E. Coweta was a good game but again. We had a linebacker trying to play corner. Like a good coach he exploited that for three early TD. Second half we made the necessary adjustments, they didn’t score again. Colquitt just ask one of there fans. Dumb coaching on our part. we ran the ball uncontested for 75yrds down to there 5 yard line 50 sec. Then our great OC deceived he wanted to throw four passes in the end zone. That game could have easily ended 19-17 Lovejoy everyone there knows it. We have a very young inexperienced team. With sometimes feels like an inexperience Offensive Coach. We don’t win pretty but we win just the same. Check the top 10 records I bet we in there somewhere like it are naw.

The main reason that the title game was moved to the dome (starting in 08) is because it is an excellent venue that facilitates the needs of all teams participating. It can hold a lot more fans and has a roof over it. The humidity can be controlled, the temperature can be controlled, and the weather can’t effect either team’s strengths/weaknesses. It gives each team the ultimate fair advantage on the field. I know that it’s a long drive for most teams below the gnat line, but there isn’t an indoor stadium anywhere south of Atlanta. It’s not going to be changed from the dome for a long time so the real question should be this…Will the GHSA ever make a legitimate effort to help fund or facilitate the needs of schools that have to travel from places like Camden, Valdosta, Colquitt, Macon, Warner Robins etc.? I think they should without question.

@ Football Dad…

“The coach stop passing the ball for two quarters. instead of running up the score…”

You’ve stated this at least five times now since Friday night. Do you know this for an absolute fact? You are 100% certain that the coach “didn’t want to run up the score”? I watched the game online and LJ was scoring with ease, but Marietta made good adjustments after the 1st qrt. I think your coach knows exactly what he’s doing, but I highly doubt that he stopped calling passing plays because he “didn’t want to run up the score”. I would be more likely to believe that if LJ was up 28-0 or something of that nature.

What game were you at between Marietta and Lovejoy. I did not see Lovejoy scoring at will. He stopped passing because of the Interceptions(3). As far “The Scrimmage” with PTR. Come on man, it was practice. If you guy’s are chirping about what you did to a team during practice, there are some serious issues there. You guys get wrapped around the axle on this stuff. Folks are going to talk up their teams, bottom line, no matter what anyone else writes or says. I am sure the Camden folks would not mind facing North Gwinnett again, why? Camden is probably better now than they were in August. I am sure every team that has faced a team early in the season would love to face them again. Relax and enjoy Friday night, if your team wins they win, if they lose they lose.

@Patrick … I don’t know if this is the correct answer and Todd probably can verify but our new high school is only for our 10th thru 12th graders and I’m guessing that the enrollment numbers that are reported to GHSA includes the 9th grade students that are housed at our Jr High School but they are still included because 9th grade is considered high school. Lovejoy’s O/C did stop throwing to Preston in the Marietta game. Didn’t do it for 2nd and 3rd quarter. If Marietta made adjustments after the first quarter, why did we score twice more with the same combination, Neely to Williams?

What showed from the scrimmage between Lovejoy and PTR is that they did not match up well with us and we did match up well with them. It also showed that our young kids were ready to play. Still learning but ready. If you can, anyone, name a team that lost what we did and are where we are at this point.

@ Sportsnut… But i’m sure that the 3 INTs Neely threw weren’t a factor in the OC’s decision to just randomly stop throwing to Williams. The coach wouldn’t ignore something like that right? He knows what he is doing. That’s why he’s the coach and you are on the sidelines. It’s his job to think strategically LOL and not over-use his best weapon/plays. I thought the OC called a very good dose of both run and pass all night. Marietta just bowed up and made it difficult for LJ’s offense. Adjustments are made on both sides of the ball, but like UGA, Marietta made a mistake in coverage and decision making. Sometimes that’s just the way it goes in sports, and sometimes a team has a kid like Preston Williams that carries his team to a W.

NGHS 09 you don’t know Lovejoy. If you see us beat some team really bad it’s because they couldn’t stop the varsity 1qrtr. They couldn’t stop the jr. Varsity 2 and 3 qrtr. And couldn’t stop the freshman 4 qrtr. That’s just our way. We played a game last year in which the whole team had extra drills on Monday because the extra point fell apart and the holder threw the ball in the end zone and we scored and extra 2 points. Not sure but I think the score was 60 something to 6 at the time.

PACKERBACKER, that would be logical and make sense. I thought of that, but said surely they won’t build a new high school and not put the 9th graders in it too, since they are freshmen in HS. That sounds somewhat discriminatory to me. Looks like it would cause some logistics problems too. Pretty silly to build a nice new high school and not put the 9th grade in it.

@NGHS09 == Another follower. Are you one too?
Yes, the coach does know what he is doing. He made they call that won the game. You say Marietta made mistakes. Did you consider that on the int’s and other plays that Lovejoy might have made mistakes? I am by no means taking anything away from Marietta, they played a good game. My point is that neither of those teams were on the field alone. Each team had something to do with the play of the other. Both teams made mistakes. This is the point where I ask you, so what is your point?

ROBFROMNORCROSS said, “how stupid would it be to have two teams from Gwinnett County have to travel to Macon to play each other?” Not nearly as “stupid” as it would be for two teams from South Ga., maybe about 35 miles apart, have to travel all the way to Atlanta to play each other. That could easily happen any year, in Region 6A. BTW, I hope you realize Macon/WR is only a little over 100 miles from Atlanta ! Nothing in your post changed my mind. College football is totally irrelevant in the discussion.

@Patrick…. several years ago we had our 9th grade with the high school …their own 9th grade wing… and I’m not sure what the exact problems were but there were so many issues that made our county separate the 9th graders back out of the high school into a Jr High … I think it was something a long the line of 14/15 yr olds with seniors … Just not a good mix. I don’t think there are any chance of that changing anytime soon either. I work with the school system and there hasn’t been any talk of 9th grade changing.

Hard for a homer to see this through his LoveWilliams High School eyes, but the reason the OC started throwing to Williams in the 4th Q (after all those interceptions) was he was desperate and had too. The reason LoveWilliams High School completed that pass was because 2 defensive backs who had it covered simply misplayed the ball and got in each others way.

@Football Dad and Sportsnut… I don’t have to “know” Lovejoy in order to tell if the OC is calling a good game. I forget though that no other team does what “Lovejoy’s way” does. I never said LJ didn’t make mistakes, but then again, it’s hard to see past your own shadow isn’t it. LOL I’m pulling for LJ on Friday because I want to see a rematch of Norcross vs LJ. I want to see Sportsnut’s and Rob’s analysis of the game from the stands. That might be more interesting than the game on the field LOL. There’s always room for improvement fellas and your OC has it under control. Unless someone else is calling the plays, I’d say he’s finding his team a way to win…but what do I know right LOL.
