AA blog: Boys basketball – teams to watch

When looking for teams to watch this basketball season in Class AA, an obvious choice is the Greater Atlanta Christian Spartans. They are the defending national champions hailing from Region 6, having defeated Bleckley County last year, 69-52, in the finals. The win capped a 29-3 season for the Spartans. In a broader context, it was their third state title in four seasons.

Will GAC repeat as state champs?

Having only lost two seniors from last season’s roster and with almost all significant contributors returning (Troy Morrison, Cam Boyd, Isaiah Wilkins and Justin Lewis, to name a few), the Spartans are a natural choice to win it all again this year. Working in their favor is incredible depth that helped them wear teams down during last year’s title run.

They’ve already played two games this season and have won both. They defeated A’s King Ridge Christian, 83-67, and made easy work of Eagles Landing – last season’s AAAA state champ – winning 75-41.

Here are two other AA teams to look for this season:

  • The Laney Wildcats also had just two seniors on last year’s team, which finished 20-9 and lost to GAC, 64-56, in the semifinals. The Wildcats return Zeph Jasper and Jashawn Brooks, who were two keys as underclassmen last year.
  • The Vidalia Indians return Ramel Thompkins, Tra Hardy, Jordan Black and Terry Jones from last season’s 24-2 squad that narrowly fell to Bleckley County, 69-67 in the quarterfinals.

I think it will come down to those two schools again….GAC vs LCL. Whoever wins that plays for State and wins!

Adam, glad you survived that open-air press box at Marist. Pretty cold up there, huh?

Might want to add Calhoun to the discussion. They were a very good team last year and have everyone back plus the Curtis kid who moved in. They will be a solid team.
