Region 7, Lovejoy WR Williams put on a show

Region 7-AAAAAA was all it was cracked up to be. Maybe more.

The region with three Top 10 teams swept Region 6 in the first round on Friday, and the games were not close. It was fifth-ranked Norcross over Etowah 28-0, seventh-ranked Collins Hill over Walton 41-7, top-ranked North Gwinnett over Milton 34-10 and unranked Peachtree Ridge over Region 7 champion Lassiter 59-20.

One wonders how well that Region 7’s fifth-place team, Mill Creek, would have done. The Hawks didn’t make the playoffs but were 6-4 and decisively defeated Dacula and Brookwood — teams that made the round of 16.

Other things we learned in the AAAAAA first round –

There were no major surprises Friday, but there was plenty of excitement in Lovejoy, where the 2012 runner-up and Region 2 champions trailed 23-21 after Marietta made a field goal with 53 seconds left. Quintarius Neely hit Preston Williams with a 47-yard touchdown pass in the finals seconds to secure the 27-23 victory. Williams caught seven passes for 275 yards and four touchdowns.

Gwinnett County went 7-1. Aside from the four Region 7 victors, Gwinnett-filled Region 8 also had a strong night. Fourth-ranked Archer, Dacula and Brookwood won. Only South Gwinnett lost, falling to Region 5 champion Alpharetta 41-23. Archer (11-0) faces No. 1 North Gwinnett (10-1) in the second round next week.

Hughes prevented a Region 1 sweep of Region 3. The two-time Region 1 champion beat Valdosta 34-20. That’s three straight first-round losses for Valdosta, the longest streak of its kind since 1972-74. Region 1 was impressive otherwise as No. 2 Camden County, No. 3 Colquitt County and Lowndes won by wide margins. Lowndes travels to Lovejoy next week.

Peachtree Ridge may have won the football game, but they certainly lost the “have some class” competition. The vandalism that was perpetrated on Lassiter property should be an automatic disqualification for Peachtree Ridge. There is such a thing as winning with class and they certainly showed NONE!

No surprises tonight. There could have been, but there weren’t.
Congrats to Region 7 on the sweep by a margin of over 30 ppg.
Congrats to Region 8 (clearly not the weakest) for going 3-1
Congrats to Region 1 for going 3-1
Congrats to Region 4 for going 3-1
Congrats to Hughes and Lovejoy and Alpharetta for keeping their regions in the playoffs for at least another week. All three of these are dangerous teams and could advance.

Well no one on the PTR team had anything to do with the vandalism. And apparently they have nailed one or two people and they are not current students at PTR.

With the exception of the last second victory by Lovejoy, Region 4 dominated.

@Richsethhardy – Peachtree Ridge is a very good team. Jordan Ellis is an amazing running back who went over 200 yards rushing again tonight. Norcross’ defense was the only team all year to really shut him down. The PTR QB Thrasher is also capable of delivering the ball to his receivers and they can make things happen in the open field. Their defense is not as good, and they seem to do the best when they put a lot of pressure on the QB to get him to rush the play. They are one of the best 5 teams in the state in my opinion.

Congrats to Lovejoy the score was closer then the game needed to be . Marietta had a good team. They just didn’t have and answer for that 6′5 machine we call Preston Williams. I feel we could have put 60 on the board, but the Lovejoy way is to win not embarrace the opponent . That gets us in trouble sometimes. Williams scored at will. Why we didn’t go to him for two quarters I don’t know. Any way great game Marietta you have a classy program.

I graduated from Marietta in 2011 and I am good friends with some of the guys on the team. I saw them personally be part of a program that went 2-8 my senior year, to upsetting Lowndes last year and come 5 seconds from another stunning upset. After the game, I almost wanted to go cry with all of them. Jordan Mathis played his heart out when our QB left the game early. It just sucks to lose the way we did. I would’ve rather been blown out than to lose like that. Good luck to Lovejoy the rest of the way

Can’t find/don’t know corner that can hold Williams in 6A let alone the state. You have to have a little luck to win a title and maybe Lovejoy got their luck in the first week. Man Preston Williams is SPECIAL!

Lovejoy For LIfe, whew is all I can say. We almost lost to a team with a receiver at quarterback. Our only offense was lob passes to Williams. Nothing to crow about. A victory yes, but awful play on offense. Marietta’s run defense was stifling and our QB play was horrible. I guess as they say “good teams find a way to win.” Well 1 down and Lowndes is coming to town.

@A Viking Fan == I am here. “Almost”. We dodged a bullet. Marietta was game and “almost” pulled it out. Everyone at Lovejoy salutes the Devils on a well played game. 58 seconds is too much time to leave a team like Lovejoy. Our kids are learning how to win. The seed of the opponent does not matter. You have to play ball. You can never quit. We didn’t.

@Marietta Fan == Good game. Your team got hit in the mouth but swung back and we knew we were in for a fight. Mathis did a better job than your starter did. After the field goal in the 4th, I started to prepare to leave, thinking it was over. Truly I did. Then I remembered that we have Preston. The coaches played it well and made the right call. Do not feel too bad, no one has been able to stay with Preston. No one. Anyway, it was a great game and we wish you guy’s luck in the upcoming season.

@Just Saying == Those were not lob passes. Those were perfectly thrown passes, hitting Preston in stride. The run game was stuffed but the QB had 335 yards, so the offense was not awful. Neely threw 4 touchdown passes. How can you call that awful? He threw 3 picks because of the pressure Marietta put on him. Lets not take anything away from Marietta. They played good football and deserve credit for their showing.

Sportsnut, what game were you watching, maybe you were watching through different glasses. The only in stride pass was on the pass that gave Lovejoy the lead. Of that 335 yards, between 250 or 270 was to Williams and all of the touchdowns. You forget the 4 interceptions he threw. Against a great team, he will not get away with those many interceptions. I was watching the game on TV so maybe it looked different than in person. Bottom line Lovejoy won, the game inside the game, Lovejoy struggled with a team that lost it’s starting QB in the first quarter and was using a receiver at QB. That RB for Marietta was a beast and could get to the edge at will. Like I have said before, that front seven for Lovejoy is good. Again hear me Bottom Line Lovejoy won. This game is over. The Vikings from Lowndes are heading to the Oaks.

Sportsnut

He only threw 3 int’s. Those were due to Marietta playing good D. It is not like it was 7 on 7. You have much right in your comments except giving Marietta credit for playing a good game. Maybe you are the one that saw it differently. I saw it live so I know what happened first hand. Does not matter at this point because, as you said, Lovejoy won.

ITISWHATITIS

3 my bad. But I never said Marietta played a good game. But since you mentioned it, for a team to lose their starting QB and keep the game close with “good run defense”, against a top ten team with a high powered offense, if I was a Marietta fan I would say it was a good game. Sure, Williams was a one man wrecking crew on offense and defense, but for Marietta to have “3″ interceptions is pretty good. Bad defense on their part on the last play though. Williams was faster than their entire defense, me, I would have put coverage over the top, since he was the only threat. His stats bear that out. Again, Lovejoy won. Even though our teams win, we need to give credit where credit is due. If you were real you know that it is concerning when you struggle with a team playing a receiver at quarterback and it takes the last play of the game to pull out the win. If I were a Lovejoy fan, I would. But again, Lovejoy did win. I give props to that Lovejoy O-line, everyone looks at that Defense, these guy’s were huge in the pass protection with the run game stuffed.

First of all i just want to say thank god for great athlete. Because that’s what you need when you have bad Offensive coaching. I have always said and i will always say. Until Lovejoy get a OC they will alway be just a group of great Athletes. Last night game just proved me right. First two possessions passes to Williams. Marietta was good but they’re secondary had no answer for Williams. He was at least 5 to 6 inches taller then there tallest DB, and about a foot taller then #10, who they kept putting on to cover him. But after the first two touchdowns. Our OC decided he didn’t want to exploit this FACT any longer. So for two quarters we didn’t throw another ball to Williams. The the 2012 Championship and Colquitt Game OC showed up. Lets win but don’t embarrass. So instead of making them adjust to Williams he started running the ball right into the biggest lineman and linebackers we’ve seen all season.I know there coach said thank god. Two trick player and a terrible pass interference call and we are down 20-14 Let’s Go back to Williams No problem back up 21-20. Marietta mistake was not trying to score. They just wanted to get in field goal range. Which was about 60 yards with that kicker OMG. But i know his defensive Coach knew it was to much time left on the clock for a player that was scoring at well. Again it never had to be that close.

I did not see the game but itd sounds like Mariesta played a gret game against a good team. What a heartbreaker for the Marietta fans to go ahead with less than a minute in the game only to lose on a hail Mary as the clock expires. Wow!

Rush Propst has shown exactly how to handle a team with a single dominating receiver in High School. First you double cover, and if that doesn’t work you just foul him. Imagine if the DB tackles Preston on that final play. He does not catch the ball and win the game. Instead Lovejoy gets a 1st down and the ball goes BACK TO THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE before assessing the penalty. Lovejoy can still run another play, but they don’t score on that play and they probably don’t score on the extra play. It is High School, those are the rules. The veteran coaches know how to use the rules to win.

@Suwanee 0wns, totally agree with your assessment to handling a dominant receiver. Basically, a mugging takes place on every play; he’s not allowed to beat you. Sadly, many coaches have egos that make them think, “it won’t happen to my team” What’s the definition of insanity? To continue to do things the same way, but expect different results.

For Marietta fans, we are incredibly proud of our team and coaching staff as we fought back from 14-0 with a senior receiver at QB who had never played a single varsity play at QB. We had no answer for LJ’s 6′5″ receiver even with two DB’s on him. But we played our tails off and our program is in great hands with Scott Burton as our coach. A great game and a tough loss.

Region 7 is very talented. Wow! Hard to tell when they beat each other up all year but they completely dominated Region 5 and swept them. I see all 4 Region 7 teams advancing again. North vs Archer will be a good game but North is way more than Archer has seen all year and won’t have an answer for all their weapons. C Hill v Alpharetta could turn into a track meet and should be a fun game to watch. They could bust the scoreboard in that one!!

Seedlings doesn’t matter when it comes to the playoff, the teams that suppose to win find ways to win, when it comes time for the Championship game in the Ga Dome, I guarantee it will not be a surprise , the coaching staff and the football team will be sound. You will not have a team in the Ship that makes a lot of turnovers, you will not have a coaching staff that does not make adjustments. This is why I am saying the teams that when in the playoffs are suppose to win.

Sportsnut, I was just “poking” at ya in my previous post. Trust me, the entire Viking Nation respects Lovejoy. One of our coach Randy McPherson’s worst losses in his career was in his first year at Lowndes, a playoff loss to Lovejoy (something like 42-3) on one of the coldest nights I’ve ever sat thru a high school ball game! And we have watched your team advance much further than us in recent year playoffs.

At this point, week two, we are just happy to still be playing. Our cross town brothers lost at Hughes. We feel for them, and know how fortunate we are to have another game.

Congrats to Gwinnett County, 7-1 and that’s only in 6A! Wow!

Going up I-75 from Valdosta, what exit do we take to get to Lovejoy Friday? If someone doesn’t mind, please give us that help, as well as directions to the stadium from I-75. (It’s been a long time and a Lot of games and miles since 2002 and our last triper the 3rd quarter up there.) thanks!

As far as last night is concerned, East Coweta never quit. Not even when we started substituting after the 3rd quarter with us up 38-3. They kept hitting, kept coming. My biggest disappointment was the size of the Lowndes crowd. (I’m sure the weather and miles affected it tremendously.) But as I sat in the stadium, I realized we had as many as, if not more than, what I saw on the home side across the field. For that to be a “home” game and not to even come close to filling their stands, is something you would never see in Tifton, Moultrie, Coffee County, Camden, Valdosta, Ware, Brunswick, thomasville, for that matter, hardly anywhere we normally play. It is sad for those young men who give so much for their school and community!

One thing Lovejoy can be sure of, Lowndes County is coming! 25 school buses with band students, two semis with band equipment, four buses with players, one bus with rah rah girls, twelve Lowndes County sheriff cars, and four thousand screaming diehard Lowndes fans. And my cowbell!

Even in a win it’s still negativity on this page. You all act like Marietta was a week 4 seed. They were playing much better football at the end of the year. The early season losses to Hillgrove and McEachern is what made them a 4 seed but they had won 6 straight including knocking off North Cobb two weeks ago. That Marietta team Lovejoy played last night was a team on a roll so don’t take nothing away from this win. Yes our region got outscored by a massive amount but they did last year. Yes Region representation is something you look forward to in the playoffs but IT’S EVERY TEAM FOR THEMSELVES. If Marietta had won the title, it’s MARIETTA’S title not Region 4’s.
