Mays 14, Clarke Central 10

Randercous Davis had 122 of his game-high 155 rushing yards – including 47 on the game-winning drive – to lead Mays to a 14-10 win over Clarke Central in the first round of the Class AAAAA playoffs.

It was the sophomore’s first game at running back, having shifted from running back to receiver and now back again, and he got off to a slow start with 38 yards on 9 first-half carries.

But he exploded in the third and fourth quarters and, when the game was on the line in the final 8 minutes, handing it to Davis was the way to go.

“We felt like, in the first half, we could run the football,” Mays coach Corey Jarvis said. “And I think we kind of got away from it too much. In the second half … we finally let our offensive line come off the football. We moved (Davis) to running back because we needed somebody explosive, and he did a heck of a job.”

On that winning drive, he ran on five of the seven plays, including the 1-yard scoring run that capped a 55-yard drive and gave Mays (8-3) its first lead of the game with 5:34 remaining.

But, despite having failed to put together a sustained drive all game up to that point, Clarke Central (7-4) wasn’t done.

That was largely thanks to quarterback Cameron Johnson, who amassed 68 of his team-high 96 rushing yards on the ensuing drive, knifing through the Mays defense for gains of 10, 22 and 29 yards on the way to the Raider 10-yard line.

On third and 3 from the 5, he ran play action and looked right, where Qua-Von Scott was standing wide open in the end zone. He lofted the ball softly into Scott’s arms for what looked like the winning score.

But the Gladiators were flagged for illegal man downfield, negating the touchdown. Two plays later, a Johnson pass fell harmlessly out the back of the end zone, and Region 6 No. 2 seed Mays escaped Clarke Central’s upset bid.

Davis got his 155 rushing yards on 24 carries, for a 6.45-yard average. Johnson had 92 of his rushing yards in the second half, and he also had 49 yards through the air.

Mays will play next week at Region 7 No. 1 seed Kell, who defeated Allatoona 31-17 in the first round.

Clarke C.         7          0          3          0 – 10

Mays               7          0          0          7 – 14

C – Austin Johnson 16 pass from Cameron Johnson (Matthew Ward kick)

M – Natrez Patrick 76 field goal block return (Jordan Goodlett kick)

C – Ward 48 FG

M – Randercous Davis 1 run (Goodlett kick)

Mays should have blown Clark Central out. CC benefited from some bad coaching moves at first but kudos to Coach Jarvis and Co. for making the necessary adjustments and running the ball down their throats. Way to shut down CC’s offense and keeping them out of the end zone in the second half! THE HILL IS REAL!!!

Congrats to Mays….but to say they should have blown us out? Clarke had several more chances than Mays to win that game…and Mays needed THREE huge penalty calls to keep the scoring drive alive that beat Clarke (and don’t forget the touchdown that was called back with 3 minutes left that had you beat as well). Clarke’s defense held Mays offense out of the endzone for 3 quarters and half of the 4th. You guys will have your reality check next Friday at Kell. Kell wins by 3 scores minimum.

@centralfan You mean you had your reality check tonight! That final score should have been 28 – 10! I guarantee you that Kell won’t win by three touchdowns. Kell better watch out because if Mays plays that inspired football like they can then they will shock those Longhorns. Enjoy your off season!

Mays has a great chance vs Kell. Cobb county football in general is overrated.

@centralfan. I guess from your comments we can all conclude that Clarke Central was a more undisciplined team than Mays was.

Congrats to Mays on your win. Also, I would like to thank you for Q. Neely. As a 10th grader, he has a bright future. We love him here at Lovejoy. He should have never left our area but that is O.K. He came home.

Mays had the ball inside the 5 yard line twice and didn’t score. And two other times inside the red zone and came away empty. CC only came in scoring position one time in the second half. Like I said, the game should not have been that close!

Correct…the game should have been 10-7 Clarke…you won on a blocked FG return for a TD, your offense was shut down by a #3 seed team who had been giving up 22 points a game this year. Enjoy today, you will have a long night at Kell next Friday if that Mays offense shows up again. I think the way Mays played last night made Tucker and Stephenson look a little weaker. Not so sure how Region 6 will do the next round with two road games. Again, I congratulate Mays, but you guys barely beat a patchwork Clarke Central team (7 starters out due to injuries, including starting RB & FB) and I think you need to quit patting yourselves on the back.

We’ll see next week, congrats to Clarke for a great effort on the road last night. Good Luck to Mays next week at KELL.

GO RAIDERS! But we almost shot ourselves in the foot with the penalties. BUT when it counted we made it happen and still came out of it with a ‘W’. I can’t wait to go back and look at the video of this game again….adjustments will be made and we will be ready for Kell! I totally agree with….Defense wins championships. Mays, Tucker and Stephenson are all good defensive teams….our region is no joke so I think these teams will be ready to compete and give the teams they play a run for their money.

@centralfan awww don’t be mad….lol! We can all go back and dissect the game….like the Mays TD on the punt returned that was called back for that BS block in the back call or all the holding that was going on by Clarke Central that was only called ONE time the whole game….so it is what it is. All teams have injuries at this point in the season…you do….we do and so does Kell. Their starting qb is out….so this new qb has not seen a defense like ours. The boys will be ready! Go Raiders!

@Raidermom….not mad, but not gonna lie that it stings to lose the way we did. I totally give props to your defense, they are one of the best I have seen all season, but it’s your offense that really blowed my mind, and as much as DEFENSE wins championships, you have still got to put points up on the board. And remember, Clarke did score a TD with 2 minutes left that would have won the game, but the refs called ‘ILLEGAL MAN DOWN FIELD’…an offensive mistake by Clarke, not a defensive stop by Mays that gave you the game. The teams will get tougher as you advance in the next rounds, and you will be needing more than 7 points from your offense to win in those coming rounds. Also would like to give a shout out to the people who were hosting at Lakewood Stadium, they helped make our visit there very nice. Also would like to give a shout out to the Mays fans (very spirited and vocal) and a standing ovation to the Mays Band, one heck of a halftime performance.

Good luck the rest of the way.

We are not patting ourselves on the back, we are just responding to all the disrespect Reg 6 receives every year. No disrespect to CC! You guys did play lights out and the defensive lineman (#94 I think) is a beast. He put down a hit on the May running back at the end of the game that made my bones rattle. You guys have a strong history and rich tradition and you can tell by the good fans you have. Hope you guys are able to reclaim you region next year and good luck! Now it’s time for those RAIDERS TO FEAST ON THOSE COWS! LOL!
